If I remember correctly, Winters was quoting from a letter he received from an Easy company soldier after the war. It wasn't his grandson and reply. @@davidzwisohn5478
Spier's run to and back through hostile territory is legendary and adds to his badassery. He really took the initiative and salvaged a potential disaster.
In reality Norman dike was actually shot in the arm and probably in shock and that’s why he froze instead of just getting scared or whatever reason he stopped the attack in the series
and this happened in real life
Spiers was just playing Call of Duty without knowing it.
The look on the faces of the Germans as he runs past them is so good.
The only inaccurate part is the length of the field he ran. And once you realize he ran further than in the series really adds much more badassery to his character.

I loathe this common response to this series. What is it that makes you sympathize with Nazis? And don't even try to tell me they weren't Nazis. These men were the life blood of HItler's Army and fine with it.
@@kkpenney444I don’t think people are sympathising with the Nazis (unless I’ve missed some). I think it’s realising that when Liebgott is translating what the general is saying, it’s how closely the Nazi soldiers’ experience in combat, mirror their own experiences, regarding the bond they formed.
I’m sorry, you seem to have made a mistake. You said ONE of the best TV miniseries, it’s actually THE best TV miniseries. Please get it right.

Ever since i discovered Band of Brothers, i have this particular feeling about a series so well done and performed, portraying the men that came and saved Europe and especially France.
I have tears in my eyes every single time i think of these men who came and saved my country, who fought, who were hurt, who died...

Any scene with DAVID SCHWIMMER...this guy goes from loveable Ross on Friends to playing Capt. Sobel...I thought he was brilliant. He should have got an Emmy or a Golden Globe for his performance...being former Army he reminded me of so many officers I have met in my time in the Military, over eager and not knowing what the hell he's doing...brilliant.

I know a lot of people were put off with him being in the show. I thought he did a great job. If there was any actor that ruined the moment for me in the whole series, it was Jimmy Fallon. I've seen BoB probably 25 times, and it jars me every time.

It is my least favorite thing about the mini-series--how they portray Sobel. Hats off to Schwimmer for taking the role. A lot of "good guy" actors don't like playing non good guy characters. And perhaps Sobel was as bad as portrayed. But consider that you're in this new outfit--airborne infantry--and you're asked to mold a company of new recruits into a fighting force. There were probably more screw-ups than leaders who got it perfect or even half-right. Just my opinion. @@nostrebornod
Schwimmer really was amazing in this role.
I love it when doc calls hefron babe and it brings Babe out of his depression. It helps bring that episode full circle.
I saw an interview with the actor who played Liepgott. He's a Scot with a London accent playing an American who speaks German. That's some excellent voice work. 😮😮😮
quite a few of these actors were actually British, including Winters. Even young Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy and James McAvoy were in it.

I might have seen the same interview. The fact that he’s a Scotsman who can pull off a perfect American accent as well as speak German is incredible. And although I forget the actor’s name right now, the one who portrayed Dick Winters is British. It’s such an incredible series full of so much talent.

If you watch this quite historically accurate mini series and DON'T come out with the thought "holy fk, these guys are heroes and this is why they call them the greatest generation" then you need to reevaluate your life
Disagree. What made them better than the poor sods fighting in Vietnam? Or the one fighting for independence? Or the one fighting the civil war? Or the one fighting in WW I? Each generation faces its challenges and each deserve respect. If this truely was the "greatest generation" than ccivilization is doomed as we cannot get any better. And that is a rather gloomy outlook.
@@doomhippie6673 The difference is the potential consequences of losing and not fighting in WW2 vs all those other examples you posted. Without a win in World War 2, democracy, liberty and freedom are all dead under the boot of Facism. A threat so large, it nearly took over the world. Your other examples are relatively minor in scope when compared to how vast and drastic the stakes were in World War 2.
Without the Greatest Generation, you wouldn't have the freedom to write on this UA-cam comment that you don't think they deserve that title. You have the liberty and right to disagree with what the original poster said. That's what they fought for, and why they 100% deserve that title. They are the reason we can live our lives in relative peace today, they deserve a lot more than just being called the Greatest Generation.

The book, titled the same by Tom Brokaw, is an excellent read.
The scene in the church when all soldiers were sitting there then slowly fade away as their fates are read by Lieutenant Winter’s narration. Makes me cry every time.
I believe it was lipton reading off the list.
That one was harrowing to watch.
My father served in the Army in Europe in WW2. He passed away in '98. Every time I watch this mini series it reminds me of the things my Dad went through over there. I miss him terribly.

My Dad was with the 86th infantry of the 3d Armoured though not with Patton. He said one of our Sherman's got taken out by a panzerfuche and the gi's had to check it out. That panzerfuche so powerful it went through the tank decapitated some and torn the faces off others ,all dead.
"Were you a hero in the war?" wasn't asked to Winters by his grandson. It was asked to Myron Ranney by his grandson and he wrote a letter to Winters which described the event.

Along with the scene where Easy play baseball, one other scene made me genuinely break down in tears. It was the scene directly before it where a speech was given by a German general to his men upon their surrender. The sentiments echoed that of the surviving men of Easy, Taccoa men and replacements alike. I had so much empathy for the normal German man who was forced to fight, who had to do unspeakable, unimaginable things to survive, who just wanted for him and his brothers-in-arms to see home again. War is devastating on BOTH sides. It brings out the best and worst in humanity.

The German general said, "men its been a long war, it's been a tough war. you've fought bravely, proudly, for your country. you are a special group, we share in one another a bond, that exists only in combat, among brothers, we've shared foxholes, held each other in dire moments, we've seen death and suffered together, I am proud to have served with each and every one of you. You deserve long and happy lives in peace."
The few of my distant German cousins who fought in the Wehrmacht; now all long dead. I once asked them why they fought for Hitler. Their reply: "He told us (the German people) he would make Germany great again! No lie! After WW One, the Germans were humilated and very angry. They wanted Germany to be respected again! War is mankind's stupidest hobby!
@@richardeschallert8526yeah thats what happened in WW1, Germany felt humiliated then an Austrian Painter named Adolf Hitler promised that. I wrote a report on that for a school project on why the Germans accepted and Nazism, and they say the same thing.

Sobel salute Winters is the icing on the cake.
Winters makes me cry every time i hear him answer that question, this show was absolutely perfect and i am thankful that these men got the recognition that all who served deserve. The previous few of our greatest generation who gave so much and remain with us should be held in the highest regard and those who never returned should always be remembered.
My favorite part is when capt winters tells the guys to not go on patrol to get another German soldier

A moment worth mentioning… during “The Last Patrol”, Winters disobeys orders and tells the men to not go on the ordered patrol.

Winters really put it all on the line for his men. Everyone understood.
Bastogne (the ENTIRE episode) still gives me chills - literally. The veterans' comments and their bravery in the harsh elements and chemistry to push through the night always astonish me. Sometimes I watch that one episode just to give me strength. We might have it tough sometimes, but at least we're not in Bastogne.

There's a siege described by Sienkiewicz in one of his masterpieces regarding polish wars in the middle ages, the siege of Jasna Gora monastery. The entire Bastogne episode gave me the same vibes, of something so well executed as a work of art that even time itself dilates to a never ending mental experience. Best miniseries I have seen so far, and Bastogne as the best episode and a masterpiece on its own.

I just visited Normandy and Bastogne last week. I stayed at a farmhouse not even 10 minutes away from Brecourt Manor. Went to all the memorial sites, the landing beaches, Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Sainte-Mere-Eglise, Carentan, the cemetery, museums, and finished the trip in Bois Jaques where Easy was shelled in Bastogne. They're all getting ready for the 80th anniversary of D-Day this June. It's quite an expereince.

When Winters tries to go in against orders, and then sends LT. Speirs in he more than put his money where his mouth is. One of my favorite moments of the series. When he goes into relieve Dike of command, that scene is stunning every single time. And when Buck's helmet hits the ground, it's as Earth shattering as the German artillery. "Were you a hero in the War Grandpa? Grandpa says no, but I served in a company of heroes" Near tears every time.

I especially liked the ZERO hesitation yelling Spears name when he was ordered to not do the job himself.

The series did an exceptional job of portraying the realities of war, from the chaos of battle to the quieter, more human moments between soldiers.
It’s criminal that you don’t have the crossroads battle on the list. Shows Winters leadership on the battlefield the best.
They had it as an honorable mention ("Winters shoots a young soldier"). I agree it belongs in the top 10, but probably around 8 or 9.
Easily my favorite episode and the one directed by Tom Hanks. It's stylistically unique from the rest.

One thing that’s so crazy about Spiers’ run. It was apparently twice as long as what they shot for the show. They were gonna shoot the real run, but they thought it was too unbelievable.
The actors said they talked to the veterans still alive about the scenes and if they were different the actors would go and say this and this happened to make it as accurate as possible
I thought basiliones death on iwo un the pacific was unbelivable intil i checked his Wikipedia and they toned that down as well
I've lived in Toccoa all my life and can see Currahee Mountain out my window. . My Dad saw the guys from Camp Toccoa marching when he was a little boy. CURRAHEE ♥️

Sobel was inept in terms of combat but he carved them out of wood. His brutal training prepared his men for all the hell they were walking into.
One of the soldiers (I can't remember which) basically said the same thing in the extended interviews. He said that while Sobel's training was brutal and nobody really liked him because of it, a lot of Easy men probably survived because of it.
Sobel was a trainer of men, not a leader.
I just finished rewatching this yesterday. What an amazing series, my lord! I had forgot how damn awesome this was. Just incredible. If this doesn't hit you in the feels and make you proud of all of these men you not human. Those were real men...far cry from what we have now, sadly.
The best part of Band of Brothers are the interviews, specially Episode 10, which is just interviews with those brave men. May they rest as the warriors they were, in peace.
They don't fight for political ideology, oil or land, they fight for humanity, for freedom. Truly the greatest generation !

Again, I don't like tgis name greatest generation. Men have fought in many wars throughout the ages and most of them did not go there for the cause - they went because they were drafted, forced by their lords and rulers and suffered through the ordeal. Tell me, what makes a man drafted in 1942 better than a man drafted in 1968? Why are them soldiers of WW II better than the ones who defend their nations today? Or the ones that fought for independence? George Washington doesn't quite make the cut to be considered part of "the gratest generation"? Too bad he lived 200 years prior so - not good enough I guess. This in incredibly disrespectful to all the other generations that had come before or will follow after.
Why don't we call them "a great generation" instead?
I’ll always love the crossroads episode where they charged across a field in holland after a badass firefight the night before. Dick winters is one hell of a soldier may he and all of easy company rest in peace
Not sure but I think the young soldier had just unluckily relieved himself which is why he was in the high grass. Can anyone corroborate?

You forgot The scene where they were all signing Blood on the Risers when they were on their way to Austria I believe. It's a relatively short scene (doesn't take long to get through) but idk that scene always makes me smile just because when you think about it, a bunch of war weary soldiers on their way to yet another area to occupy, find some level of peace and fun in singing a song that was meant for them.
this series should be required watch in High School.
I saw this at age 14-15 and it was brutal only parts but when I got older I saw all of it.
Sadly I don't remember learning anything about the World Wars, I or II, in High School. It was always much older stuff like the revolutionary and civil war along with a bunch of stuff from even longer ago between france and england.
The woke, left, liberal, spineless prat school teachers wouldn't allow it.

The Holocaust scene makes me cry every time I see it like now.
The actors said they did not know beforehand about this scene it was a surprise. They wanted the actors to get the same reaction when the real soldiers saw this. The director of this scene had relatives that died in the holocaust.
It breaks my heart that there are people today that think that was all made up! Oh how they dishonor these brave soul’s!

Best WW2 miniseries that Executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks can give us.
And each episode is based on real life events of "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.
All are written in the non-fictional novel with the same title by Stephen E. Ambrose.
Every mini series that Spielberg and Hanks have done (B.O.B, The Pacific & Masters Of The Air) are all true stories taken from books written by historians. Each mini series is in its own way spectacular but Band Of Brothers was perfection!
You missed the scene where Liebgott translates a German officer speaking to his men, praising them for their courage and their bravery and reminding them of the brotherhood of those in combat.
I’m on episode 5 next and loving it so far!!

BOB is hands down the greatest piece of television ever produced!

Also, the ending scene of Major Winters reading Mike Ramey’s letter never fails to make me cry like a baby.
I asked my twin boys one day, who their hero was. I almost cried when they said, "You are. Cause you fought in the wars. " I said, "Yes, i did, but i came home. The true heroes never made it back."
One of the most impactful works in recent history. I swell up every time they approach the concentration camp and every time that last baseball game starts. This series captured the bravery, the horror, the camaraderie and the brotherhood of war in a way few others have ever approached.

A lot of your Top 10 lists... meh. But you absolutely nailed this one.
There are so many great moments in BoB, that it's hard for anyone to really agree on what the 10 best should be. 100% spot on that the final interview with the BoB as they look back, especially Winters talking about Ranney and the grandkid, was a tear jerker. Maybe the opening scene where Sobel is going Red Ross on everyone (Friends reference for anyone who never watched Schwimmer as Ross) Great list, keep up the good work!

"Schindler's List" is rightly hailed as Steven Spielberg's masterpiece. But "Band of Brothers" can proudly stand beside it.
I remember watching this back in 2001 week by week with my dad when it first aired, since then it has been my favorite miniseries ever. Still holds up amazing

There were a couple of scenes that were worthy of mention: the Beethoven string quartet scene set in a destroyed town square, where the piece conveyed the sorrow and devastation of the war. Following the performance, the closing of the instrument case (a coffin symbol) was a powerful metaphor for the death of Nazi Germany. Also, the scene where a German general is granted permission to speak with a group of his troops. He talks about the honor of having served with them, the bonds that develop only among those who serve together in combat, and his wish for them to live out their years in peace. The Americans who heard the talk, including Major Winters, were moved by the General's words, realizing that they too shared the same feelings.

Great Series...
One of my favorite scenes was the German General addressing his men, with Winter's permission. I grew up in Bad Tolz and West Berlin, Germany, as an Army Brat. I lived there from 1953-1967, with a 1 year break in 1957, when my parents divorced. I spoke German as a child and I can still understand much of it today, but I don't speak it fluently any more. I visited the Eagle's Nest as a Child. It was converted to a US Retreat Center.
My dad served for in the US Army for a little over 30 years, in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. He was one of the Airborne Paratroopers who landed in Normandy on D-Day.

Come on, where the, "We salute the rank, not the man." moment?! It deserved an honorable mention! The only thing this list reminds me is that watching this show, I just did, after every episode I went: that was my favorite and they all were... truly a generation of men and women who stepped up to meet the moment.

I really like when the German colonel tries to surrender his sidearm and Winters tells him to keep it.....the mutual respect is awesome..... along with Liebgott translating when their battalion commander was speaking to his own men you really felt the sentiment from both perspectives.

I love "Band of Brothers" because they remind me every single time that what they fought for was truly worth it at the end. They showed us what kind of people we are. We are Americans and we will always stand together United under God. 🗽🇺🇸☺
The D-Day drop is a scene that I've watched over and over and over and I love it every single time I watch it. Band of Brothers is the first war series I watched ever and I'm so glad that I can say it was my first.
When Winters stands next to Blythe's fighting hole firing on the Germans while encouraging Blythe to fight, I get chills. With everything going on, he takes the time to be the leader Blythe needed in that moment. If you ever wonder why Easy company loved their commander, that is it.

As a writer and storyteller, I loved the scene with Winters at a typewriter in his office, replaying the operation over in his head as he writes the report.. What a wonderful way to narrate a battle scene..
I cry almost I watch Albert Blithe take the edelweiss off his first kill, recognizing himselfas a true soldier. It is the greatest depiction of the phrase "I can do this".
I think this is an incredibly sad scene. You aren't a true soldier unless you kill somebody. War makes monsters of us all.
What makes Band of Brothers ... what makes it so important, is that the men of Easy Company were still alive. When Stephen Ambrose when to write Citizen Soldier, they were still alive, and they talked to him, not just as individuals but as a group. And when Hanks and Spielberg set out to make the mini-series, they were STILL alive, and they talked again, as a group. They told their story, "this is who we were, this is what we did". I own a copy of Pacific, and it's a powerful moving piece of cinema, but ... I seldom return to it. Band of Brothers on the other hand, I watch over and over and over. And it's because of the men of Easy Company.

Just the finest series I've ever watched.
In number 10 'Crossroads' you left out one of the best lines ever: Lt. George Rice "Looks like you guys are gonna be surrounded." and Winter replies "We're paratroopers Lt. (pause) We're -supposed- to be surrounded."
So many great moments and scenes in probably the best show I’ve ever watched. Love the final episode with scenes including the Eagles Nest and Nixon being shown the huge wine cellar, looking like a kid at Christmas. But if I had to choose one it would be the baseball game especially knowing now that all of those guys are sadly no longer here😢

The entire series was a "best moment"! Easily one of the best miniseries I've ever seen. I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get honorable mention of the moment where they see Sobel again and they give him shit for not saluting Major Winters who now outranked him.

This series never fails to touch the heart, showing forth heroism at its finest and highlighting the greatest generation.
The last scene of the last episode makes me cry every time I watch it.
I remember waiting for each episode every week.
Not a top 10 but two Sobel related honorable mentions: Winters requesting a trial by court-martial when Sobel tried to punish him for BS infractions, and later on "Captain Sobel, we salute the rank, not the man."
I liked the moment when a driver brings them a load of ammunition just before they march into Bastogne. He says to Winters: "You're going to be surrounded." Winters' response: "We're Paratroopers, we're supposed to be surrounded!" This really hit home with me.
Compton's breakdown after Bastogne always guts me
I recently watched this series for the first time ever. I absolutely loved it, especially after hearing that the writers would ask the actual veterans to check the scripts. CURAHEE!
