19:19 A balance-patch is when developers look at the statistics of the game, say Overwatch, and decide that one character is being chosen too much, and another is played too little. So they will slightly change damage, health, cooldowns, accuracy, or any other variable to strengthen or weaken the character.

We're talking about ensuring that none of the players' pre-game choices have enough advantage over the others so as to discourage the use of specific characters. But I like to think of it in therms of gambling. No one wants to take an unfair bet. Chances are they use data from all those multiplayer matches to derive the statistics to make those game balancing adjustments.

if I had to guess I would say its because the gameplay is the novelty. if you think about it, a lot of games you play for the story, you probably don't care much about the gameplay, because you are already used to it and played the same thing thousands of times, so the "powergaming" takes a backseat over just enjoying the story. also why I don't think its bad design for story heavy games to have simple gameplay, and "gameplay heavy" games to not spend much time with dialogs and cutscenes favoring indirect storytelling.

A few things to ease your pain on God of War.
To explain once and for all since your chat is kind gullible sometimes and makes you more confuse than it should.
1: To dodge, move Kratos to the side that you want and press the "Dodge" button.
2: To roll, again choose the side that you want Kratos to roll and press twice the "Dodge" button, you can roll even backwards or towards the enemy to attack it, again just move Kratos and press 2 times the "Dodge" button.
3:Use the R3 to lock into an enemy "you will notice a white dot in the middle of the enemy" this is make more easy to dodge and roll and it will help the boy with his arrows.
4: if you wanna change your target when locked just move the "R" analog stick to the left or right and the target will change.
5: always check your Health and rage before picking up those health stones or rage stones, sometimes is better to left alone and get it back if you need it.
6:it's difficult and not always work but if you block the incoming heavy attack of an enemy at the right time "Called Parry" it will kind enter a slow motion state for a brief time "i think you noticed this while playing" when this happens you can attack the enemy and deal more damage.

Hannah, you can finish the game at balanced. Plesee don't think of it as second easiest difficulty since it assumes you know alot of mechanics to make it as such.
Before of after battles in an empty area you can practice few moves and then perform them consistently in a fight build muscle memory and move on to the next set. You can significantly reduce information load. Sometimes you may have to go and collect additional items to level up and upgrade, enemies get stronger so should you it's only fair. And lastly mind set, there is no pentality for losing its a learning opportunity.

To be honest you were getting quite good in the last stream. (The rest of my comment is meant to be helpful and not patronizing. Just to be sure the intent comes true in txt form).
But you could learn the new moves when there are no enemies around so you can just focus on the buttons (then you just can focus on learning the timing when there are enemies and not the whole thing).
Also, when in the menu, the buttons to press and the actions they will do is indicated at the very bottom right of the screen. (X to select. x to equip etc).
The main thing to know for arrmor is that when you look at an armor piece in the menu it will show a green arrow up next to the big number in the lozenge at the top right if the armor is better than what you have. Or a red arrow down if it is not as good. (If you want more health or strenght you could focus on the health or strenght bar listed under the lozenge. Again, green is good, red is bad).
When you get a new item you can press square to see it in the menu. There you can see if it is better and put it on right away (Not all items will be better as you might find some low level things you missed earlier).
You could use a resurection stone too as it gives you another chance if you die.
You can buy it at the Brok or Sindri store.
This game is quite hard and long to learn even if you are a long time gamer. So it is totaly normal that it is a slow process.

I think it's important to learn how to be upset. It's hard to think about something if you can't separate yourself from it, and it's hard to separate if you feel stressed or unprepared. Not changing the difficulty is a pride thing. Not changing the settings is more of a fear thing. As far as struggling in a new game, it's not uncommon for someone to play a game and enjoy it, and then start a new game and struggle from the raw, immediate contrast to what came before. It might not be a bad idea to try a different style of game between each massive, AAA over the shoulder story-driven, adventure game. You don't have to take this advice, of course, but I know after I play a game like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, I struggle to play other third-person action games for a while. God of War feels weird because you have too many similar games as your sample size (which most people do). Maybe try something like Inscryption or Firewatch. A game that asks for your interest instead of demands it.

That fight with the ogre was the very first time I felt frustration with GoW 2018, cause nothing I had or learned, worked on him. Not to mention how “weak” it felt to hit him with the Leviathan and I just had to, “Git Gud”, though to be honest, I think I also used the axe throwing method to kill the ogre 😅
After reaching level 8, ogres are just barely an annoyance, and a really nice ride for crowd control.
So my advice is, you’ll get better with the controls, and you’ll get better controlling Kratos and using the i-frames whilst dodging and rolling away. It’s such an amazing game and amazing story, it’ll be a delight!

You are going to die, a lot.

You are going to want to throw your controller.
You are going to want to quit.
But then you get a little further.

    Re: Balance patches.
A "patch" is a change made after a computer program is created or released (i.e. to "patch" a hole, because that's literally what you would do to a program in the days of punch cards). A "balance patch" is a patch that tries to affect the "balance" of a game, because over time games can become unbalanced, or else imbalance is inherent to the design (see: first-move advantage in games such as chess). In multiplayer games, the goal of a balance patch is fairness, so "balance" makes sense. In singleplayer games, the goal is usually to make the experience more fun or more inviting, so that existing players want to keep playing and new players will want to buy the game.
"Balance patches" happen everywhere, though the phrase is mostly restricted to video games. American football, for example, has repeatedly made new rules to try to make the game safer, restricting what types of tackles are allowed, and what counts as "unsportsmanlike conduct". The NBA created rules targeting behavior influenced by folks such as Shaq or Michael Jordan. Entire sports, such as baseball, can move toward and then away from rampant steroid usage as a "meta" (short for "metagaming", NOT "most efficient tactic available" as indicated by the video).

I have a problem of not finishing games. By the end you've got all the equipment, powerful weapons and armor, you're little raft is now a giant jungle gym of ropes and ladders. It's like "well, I guess I just finish the game then...". Oh, but there's these achievements like kill X of these guys which is on an island way back there....I may as well just restart.
Like trying to catch that first time. Problem is, this ain't the first time, this is the 137th time restarting. First get this, now this, wait for dialogue trigger, skip, build this, go here, wait 3 days.
That moment when you can recite the beginning scenes of Skyrim, "wait, you're not on the list. Who are you?" You're not learning and adapting, wondering what all this does - you're following a set of instructions that you've done many times over. Granted maybe once in a while you actually do something different - then that's when the game mechanics become obvious. Get ore, build better Armour, use better Armour to go get better ore, build better Armour, etc. But goddammit I'm gonna finish that fucking game.

honestly there is a point in ones life there you realize that it's alright to stop something if you are not enjoying it.
i used to always try to finish every book or game i started back in the day, but now that's an honor only a few get.
if something is not able to capture my attention, why bother any further with it?
sometimes that isn't even the end of that particular experience either.
sometimes you only "get" something after giving it a second chance months later.
there also those times in which i start something, only to realize 20minutes into it that i am simply not in the right mindset for that experience at the moment.
i pause it and think about the experince i actually want at that moment.
sometimes i just don't feel like plaything through "DOOM" and i am more in the mindset for something like a "xenoblade 3" or "fear and hunger"
sometimes i might not even be into a slight version of a certain thing.
the HP and LOTR books are both in the fantasy genre with strannge creatures and magic, but no one would tell you that they are the same experience.
like daryl said, it's all about the thing you want out of it.

That determination to “get better” and finish a hard game has never really been how I play games. Honestly nothing makes me nope out of a game faster than dying in the same place over and over. I prefer something that lets me role play a character like Mass Effect or strategy games that are about building cities and/or commanding armies. That’s one of the great things about gaming, especially today, no matter what tickles your fancy there’s something out there that caters to it. Something with elements of both approaches you might like is Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord.

Hating a game and wanting to finish it for the sake of saying you beat it is fine and all, but if that’s the kind of gamer you are at this moment then no wonder Last of Us and God of War won’t leave a mark on you. Those games rely heavily on the story and expect you to be an adequate level of skill to enjoy them, but you’re not even adequate.
You’re a newbie, you gotta think about how your character and constantly ask questions about basic mechanics. You think too much about actions and don’t respond to them naturally. God of War like many games expect you to know the basics, but you can’t even find the dodge/roll button.
If you wanna beat the game for the sake of beating it, fine. But learn what buttons do what. Get a feel for them. Practice them over and over until you don’t think about doing an action, you just do it instinctually.
I agree, God of War was a terrible choice for someone who’s very new to playing video games, but since you have the stubbornness of a gamer, you may as well ingrain the muscle memory of one as well. Everyone starts out sucking, and all that.

Hannah, about re-playability, a lot of people replay games years after they played them if there's a certain buzz about it. Like for example The Last of Us. Let's say they announce Last of Us 3 is in the works and since it takes years to make games, it will release 2026. Chances are lots of gamers will replay Last of Us 1 and 2 late 2025/2026 to "refresh" our knowledge of the story or just genuinely wanting to have a revised, fresh investment as we launch up the newest instalment. It's like getting a sequel to a movie a decade later. You will be tempted to watch the first instalment right before you go to the cinema too.

Not saying it is so, but you might like games where you have to write as if you were a character to play a game (not only that, but part of it). RPing in a game. There are a lot of communities out there in all sorts of games, and I know some of them have spawned writers that have done really well because they can do dialogue so easily after playing a game and testing it on others. In addition, they get inspired.
I can't remember specific current titles, but I do remember the first time I encountered people that RPd (roleplayed) in a game. I think it was a multiplayer Star Wars game. I at first thought them crazy and a bit weird, but when I realized they get more out of the game than I do (by immersing themselves), I got a bit jealous instead :D

If a game successfully gains and maintains your attention while challenging you, then the mind may begin to comb over possibility; ways to succeed. The mind crawls over possibilities and finds approaches to the problems for testing. Even if the solution is persistence and practice, or to "git gud" in the vernacular of those who surpass a game's challenge. If it's on your mind you may have some sudden realization about the challenge while doing something unrelated. By the time it has it's hooks into you the easiest paths becomes finishing it, just to get closure to that challenge.
Then again, you do have an audience. Maybe there's a social component? Nobody likes to feel tested and found wanting. Perhaps your twitch chat plays a part in your motivation?

Hannah, it's not really worth the headache either way to claim you're not a replay gamer. People who aren't the competitive type don't consciously decide to replay a game, or rarely do so consciously. The replay choses them. If it happens don't sweat it.
Funny thing though. I've walked away from quite a few in my time (what does the phrase "old as dirt" mean to you?) I'm also not really a replay gamer, but something funny happened when playing Doom 3, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas. All three of those games became replays for me almost immediately after playing. In fact, for Doom 3 I was eight levels into a replay nine hours after the end credits of the first playthrough. That included a five hour nap. The takeaway from this? You don't choose replays, they choose you.

I think this is because of the completionist in me. That being said this will happen only with games I like. If I hate the game I am just glad its over when I get to the ending. Like Hanna I want to finish games I play although if I get stuck I might take a long break there are Zelda games that I started playing almost 20 years ago and have not finished but I return to once every few tyears only to stop because I can't figure how to progress or get stuck in a new puzzle futher on in the game.
