I agree with you about the smile at the end. He is so serious and solemn during the whole song and them give this awesome and real smile showing how good he felt and how happy he was!!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️♥️😃😃😃🌹🌹🌹
I have now listened to this song 8 times. I love the sound and the lyrics. In fact, I liked the lyrics so much that I spent an hour or more writing them out as Thom Schuyler sang them. One of the classic moments in the song is when Thom sings "But, I really think you DO." The way he accents the word "do" punctuates the theme of the song. Thank you for the song and your version of it.
I didn't think anyone but Lacy J. could sing this song as it ought to be sung. But I have been reminded that a writer has that song in his (or her) soul. That was good!
@@mintamearaself799 I said "I wish the "real" version was recorded by Lacy". WISH< I WISH.I also could have called it the original version instead of the "real" version. I was not trying to piss anyone off. Just saying this is a great song and Lacy is a great performer. It would be great to hear her do the entire song.
@@mintamearaself799 I guess I am just used to people firing at each other LOL Thank You! If I ever come across a version like that I will cherish it and share it!
I love this song. I lived in Nashville and would listen to it driving down 16th Ave. In the early 90's. I think he sings it better than Lacy. Thanks Thom for the great music.
Thom....if you read this....I am extremely grateful that you wrote this song. You can make jokes about writing "bad " country songs as much as you want. You never did......you just wrote about what you felt at the time. I'm happy that Lacey J made some money from your song.....hope you got money out of it too. I saw your daughter sing in a video with your church....she has a wonderful voice.....All the best to you and your family,
The line that makes the song great: “...for a while, they’ll go in style...”. It fits so many artists from that early ‘80s era, if not Lacy J. Dalton herself. Gail Davies, T.G. Sheppard, Charly McClain, Many others, as well as a host of bands like Atlanta who tried riding the coattails of the ORB and Alabama. 16th Avenue is an unforgiving place where artists are only as good as the sales of their last album. Thom Schuyler clearly knew of what he wrote and sang in this song, Lacy J Dalton Felt that connection, and the result is one of the best country songs of the 1980s that, like the artists of whom they sing, is too often overlooked.
I remember the debut of this song, I think it was on one of those big TV awards shows from Nashville, and a few of those old timers looked like they were holding back tears.
Still brings a lump to the throat, a tear to the eye. A good country song, any good song, good lyrics, have to be of words structured to fit properly, structured to rhyme in time, no different than when voices get together to sing they're better on the ears if they blend and harmonize. They don't write 'em like this anymore.
You want to to learn about country music and Nashville? Spend a lot of time reading books and such, or.....you could listen to this song. Thom Schuyler and 16th Avenue tells you everything you need to know.
Now some were born to money They've never had to say ?Survive? And others swing a 9 pound hammer Just to stay alive Been there. Done that. Swung that hammer. Still do but now it's a wood splitting mall. 77 and still cut my own firewood.
I appreciate Thom singing his song, he wrote. Lacy brought a female, commercial version that was more marketable. I'LL always prefer Townes Van Zant singing "Pancho & Lefty" with the Mexican horns on "The late great Townes Van Zant" LP. He sings it like Thom sings this song. The authenticity of the author.
I kinda have this idea in my mind. A fantasie that God had come to us here on earth and sing to us about one way of life. And that this guy was him. And at the end of the song seeing his reaction from the humans made him so happy.
Yes Thom he sings it better than Lacy . She sings a completly different lyrics...bStill beutifull but... In this case the writer of this song sings it better than Lacy´s performens. Btw it´s not always true somethimes a cover is bettrer than original.
Angele Dohmen With all due respect I must disagree. A live recording allows the listener to see their faces and reactions. Many, including myself, liked the seriousness on his face while singing this awesome song and loved the smile at the end. Can't get that off a cover. Have a good day.
I really like Thom here. In the later video where he sings the updated parody version of this song, he comes off as a smug, angry a-hole. Please go back to the way you were, Thom.
His updated version reflects a sad reality, and you can bet the legacy performers and writers can very much relate. He lived it, and sure as hell doesn't deserve to have you running him down for his take on what has happened to country music
Some of the best lines ever written in music.
Not only does this song touch my heart with every replay, but the sincerity of his smile at the end seals it as 100% authentic. It's perfect.

Good to see one of the all time greats looking so young once again. Bless you, Thom for all the happiness you've brought to so many for so long.

Yes.

Lacy J had to do what "They" told her to do. She wrote a song about how awful Nashville was to her. I wish the "real" version was recorded by Lacy!

The great American song. Perfectly written, perfectly performed.

I've never been to Nashville but I looked up 16th Ave on street view and he wasn't kidding about it being quiet and discrete.
Unfortunately it's disappearing.
This song is what real country is !
A great song did not know he wrote it. Thanks for posting that
You're welcome, thank you!

Beautiful song/music, Thom. You put so much feeling into writing and now singing 16th Avenue. Love it. Thank you.
Like a miracle some golden words roll off of someone's tongue..... says it all
Not only does he write songs well. he can sing great too...thank you for this great song...

Great tune. 👌
Fabulous song, and so true.
The best voice !! Your voice sounds almost like Lacy J Dalton. It has this 'twang' sound.
Great voice.
Love this song no matter who sings it, although this was a good version. Thank you Doug, great job! ; )
You're welcome, thanks!
I was the 800th like.
In 2016 he wrote a follow up to this song. It really sums up what Corporate music has done to Nashville.
Thanks for posting....I just went and checked it out and it was great. Of course his voice is no longer this high!!

I believe he also wrote that great Kenny Rogers tune, "Love will turn you around".
And “A Long Line of Love” for MMM.

These aren't the same lyrics that Lacy J Dalton sang. How'd they get changed?
We'll,, this guy actually wrote the song.
He can use any lyrics he wants. It is his song. One of the very best.
It's the same lyrics. She--or her producers--just had to edit it down to fit the 3:30 minute radio format.
He's got about two verses there that Lacy J. didn't manage to fit in!
if your gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit, so they cut it down to 3:05 . . . .

I do not have first hand knowledge. But I am positive it is true...For many you've heard of...And thousands you haven't. TgT
Thom Schuyler came to Nashville to be a songwriter and was discovered working as a carpenter at a office of a music publishing company.
It happens every day!
