  • This is the finale of Ruggero Leoncavallo's last work "Edipo Re" based on the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. It was premiered in 1920 and the title-role was sung by the great Titta Ruffo. This recording is from a live performance in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Michael Davidson sings Edipo. Kees Bakels conducts.

Once again, Bravissimo, Mr. Davidson! Isn't it wonderful that you have these recordings of him performing such beautiful music that one never hears (or even knows of) today (and a great pity it is too -- there is so much neglected stuff out there that deserves to be heard).
Would love to hear how fares the son in his baritonal endeavors these days (hint, hint ;-).
Thanks for another superb clip! (You always do such a great job with the visuals as well :-)

Per me questa è una pagina tra le più alte del compositore. Si trapassa dall'arioso drammatico alla dolcissime frasi " Miei poveri fior" e poi di nuovo al drammatico finale. Meritatissimi gli applausi
