Tim (if I may call you so sir?), more than one year after you posted I am looking to buy some good boots and a good head-torch. I will try to keep this simple but the huge amounts of 'stuff' on offer with all sorts of varying opinions and price points just leaves my head spinning! Nice to find a good no BS guy (sub for sure). Allow me to put it like this, if you need good gear and buy cheap gear, you will always have cheap gear, if you get the right gear/tools, you will only cry once, then you will have the right tools always. that will be applied most carefully.. I really like the presentation on this light that you showed us all on youtube. What light would you recommend today since technology has moved so far ahead ??? Thanks and good day too. VF
Very nice and as I say you get what you pay for..Very good lighting choices not too many ,I agree no strobe.I would like someone to invent a head lamp with a small remote, something to turn it on and up and down with ,small leds that light up to show what level you are on, it would only need to fit 1 aaa ,about a inch and a half x a inch.So much easier than fumbling around on your head and not knowing what it is set on.Still having the head unit buttons of course..
I bought this Fenix HL60R 2 years ago on Amazon. It was great when it worked. Unfortunately the on-off switch became unstable then stopped working completely. Fenix service first tried to blame it on the batteries even I alerady stated it was tested with several different batteries. Then they instruct me to send it to Fenix factory in China at my own cost! After a month they now try to blame package service that they never receive it. In reality the 5 year warranty is really useless. It would be great if they had a service center outside China.
Thanks for the review. Impressive performance. However, I'd like to know if it has lock mode so it could not be turned on accidentally while in the backpack.
Before I knew about 18650's I first bought some of those Chinese "4000 mAh" ones. Rubbish. Then got onto - Panasonic NCR 18650 B 3400mAh. Now have - Panasonic NCR 18650 GA 3500mAh. 3500 is the highest genuine mAh. I just had a look on ebay, 9900mAa for less than $4. lol GTF (out) brand.
EverydayTacticalVids Nub? They're called a button top. Flat tops are usually unprotected. I would only change my 18650 Orbtronics (Panasonic/Sanyo) with a smart chager and use the USB when there's no other option. You don't want to short life your $15 batteries.

Gregory Quinn it's a little heavier then some other headlamps, but I do like it a lot and it doesn't feel unbalanced. I also don't prefer battery packs in the back.
@@roberttosa2560 , I Have the Fenix pd35 tac & the Fenix pd35 V-2 I don't use the tactical option so I would recommend the V2 because it has a battery power indicator light on the side switch

I'm hoping someone with an HL60R could answer a question for me. When charging a battery with anything under a 2amp output, do your red lights stay solid instead of flashing as they should when charging? I can drain a battery, put it on a 1amp wall adapter and get a solid light. Immediately unplug and put on a 2.1amp, flashing reds as the manual states...
whitehat55 yeah very strange. I've not tried it with any other charger as i just take the battery out usually and charge it with all my other 18650s. it certainly is a great light! will be getting a second one soon for the Mrs!
Christian Wales Whitfield Lee i'm not terribly familiar with the size of a motorcross helmet - my guess is it would just barely fit or maybe even be a little bit too small to fit around it.
EverydayTacticalVids Pity, I noticed the lil connection port on the side and summed it up to be rs232 comport. I am looking for an old machine to program my xts3000s and mts2000 on. My XP SP3 on my Oracle VM crapped out on my and Im now yearning for a physical port. Hopfully Ill come by one soon and for cheap.
I already own a few adapters. My computer has an issue with displaying the virtual ports with the drivers I use. MCS has worked for years for me but I am just about down with these Astro Sabers. I've tried three different VPNs and I can't get the radios to recognize the virtual ports. I may need a physical one.
The drivers were made for the XP OS, I know for a fact the drivers and all the adjunct equipment works well. It's just my computer. Running Motorola CPS software on more "modern" and "high end" computers has always been a shot in the dark. I can program the units with varying degrees of success on my old 2006 tower just not my windows 7 home laptop from 2010. Im just looking for a service pack 3 laptop with a native comport.
I've been eyeing a reasonably priced CF 30 on eBay. But I might just slap a com card on my extra PCI express slot on the mobo to see if that works before I spend 200 plus on an old refurbished cruiser MDT. I've tried many different configs and adapter. Dual boot was a bust, Virtual box, windows machine, and Oracle didn't work either. I've ordered a ten dollar rs232 last night. If that doesn't work im going for the Pani Touchbook... I can't let these 700 dollar radios go to waste now.
Great review and ilumination...but! The fact that it does not use AA (universal type) batteries is a deal breaker for me. It cost me as low as 17 cents a battery. Furthermore, I need non-stop performance. That means I need to get headlamp up and running in seconds after power is depleted. Great design, but flawed in choices and performance from multiple power sources by manufacturer.
@K S You just dont get it. I said "universal"! If I come out of my house and go to the corner bodega...they have AA batteries. I travel to Spain...they have AA batteries all over. I travel to Turkey....Istanbul...the stores HAVE AA batteries. I can get them in Peru, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Australia, Kenya...pick a city or country!! The AA is the "universal" battery!. I can obtain AA batteries practically anywhere on the planet, where there is a decent city, town, or supply house, or store, if I have a need to on the spot re-supply practically anywhere on earth I travel to. Got it!

Mike R. Does it take your phone 2 days to charge with a USB? 18650s are about the same capacity as a phone. They charge in a few hours with a 2.4A charger.
Just found out that the port is waterproof without the cover. The cover is just a dust cover. Fenix mentions this in the product description.

So according to the battery specs, if I'm using a thrunite li-ion 18650, the light might not work?
