I was there on a sunny August day. I felt the ground trembling as thousands of soldiers were marching proudly past me to the tune of the Hohenfriedberger. The crowd was cheering. Beautiful young blonde girls were throwing flowers at the soldiers. The youth was smiling with sparks in their blue eyes as they waved to their heroes and idols. The also smiling guards joined hands to keep the excited crowd from storming the parade. The red and white flags with an ancient symbol were flying above our heads. The symbol that restored hope and pride in us all. The soldiers were saluting our leader and he saluted back. It was Germany. It was alive and flourishing and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

I do not understand the logic behind banning songs. Historical songs are an wonderful way to teach history. Die Fahne Hoch (with lyrics!) is a great way to illustrate that era and learn about it. It is about learning, not about supporting nazism. There are a lot of other songs reminding of other historical time, not banned. Is studying history a crime?!

I went to Vienna a couple of weeks ago, and I visited Hederplatz to then make my way through Ringstraße, the Operahaus and the Imperial Hotel with this song, alongside othef versions of Horst Wessel Lied, on my headphones.
I must admit that was a glorious experience. I was truly moved and deeply touched.
I got the illusion of living the enthusiasm, hopes and excitement that those people who were there at the time got to experience.
I loved it. I got emotional about it.
