    I like Alan's reaction at 9:50 when Paul Gambaccini asks him if he's ever watched Dave on stage. His voice takes a different, more upbeat tone and he raises his left eyebrow which he often does to emphasise a point and/or when he engages in a conversation. I have never really heard Martin or Andy talk so fondly about Dave's stage performance and his qualities as a frontman.

      Martin isn’t the person who is full of compliments to give. Dave has said that the best compliment he was recieved from Martin was something like “I write the songs which I recieve from above and I need your voice to sing them”.

      @@ca77721 Ever heard Martin solo albums? below mediocre. How about Dave’s solos maybe 1 good song the rest below mediocre. Alan’s recoil was also below mediocre. All 3 mediocre because alone they are not good. Dave and Martin is a little better but production is lazy and their hits are too basic. Not enough layers, weak progressions, and zero or lazy climax. People can say Martin writes songs but it takes alot of work to put out legendary albums of BC, MFTM, Violator and SOFAD. You can’t just stroll into the studio drunk at 5 and leave at 10. You need a talented control freak and workaholic like Alan.

    emersiveav On the contrary, Alan was really willing to help them make music. But you have to understand that specifically on _Songs of Faith & Devotion_, he did 90% of the work. Making the music, mixing it, editing it... he was there 10 hours longer than any of the remaining members, and he hardly got any recognition for it. Andy was particularly harsh on him sometimes.
    Can't really blame him if he was partially fed up with the whole situation. Plus, those were some really troubling times for all the members.

      @dkmyww 6 років тому +21

      SportsFan_9630 They may well have been Martins melodies and lyrics but without a musician such as Alan, Depeche Mode would not have produced those songs...: Martins ego meant he could not give Alan any credit for creating those songs ! Fletch was counting the money, Dave sings what he is given, Martin and Alan deliver the music..... but Martin would only have the credits associated with him!

    • @EANDM71
      @EANDM71 6 років тому +7

      Why are you blaming Martin? He's always spoken highly and fairly about Alan's role and contribution. And DM has always worked with a variety of music producers. Alan was the one with the ego. He was admittedly a control freak. And again, no matter what you or anyone says, Depeche Mode would not exist without Martin. His songs. His compositions. His music. he is the driving force behind DM's success. Period!!!

    • @EANDM71
      @EANDM71 6 років тому +4

      BULLSHIT!! Martin didn't take all the credit! Thats a flat-out lie! Read all the liner notes. It The notes ALWAYS says PRODUCED BY Depeche Mode (and Flood or any other producer they were working with at the time). Im not just going to blame Martin. What about Dave and Fletch? Why don't people blame them as much as they unfairly attack Martin? What you've written here is complete and utter bullshit!

    "Time is money." Smile, wink wink.
    They are the genuine article. Their brave sincerity and compassion for another and to their ART is FORTITUDE
    and worthy of renown respect!
    It's evident at this time they were all going through a tribulation in some form or another. Mercy, Faith, Condemnation,
    Truth, Lies, High, Walking in My Shoes, were embedded throughout the album. Need I say more?
    I've been a fan since MV3! and stopped going to see them live in reverence to Alan Wilder after the Devotional Tour.
    Either you're too stupid to notice,Zs,Ys, Theybies, whatever, should be jealous of Generation X! Today's music is puke.
    We got to experience an ECLECTIC array of music, unparalleled since the invention of rock 'n' roll! e.g. New Wave, Punk,
    Raves and Hip Hop!
    I know I must of missed something! Yeah!

    Ironically, within all the problems they were going through, they had created such a good album, perhaps the pinnacle of their career. Things are like this, and it is in vain to think assumptions. In the end, personally I appreciate all that stormy stage of the band, they created that excellent album. Later, it is known that Alan decided to leave the band pitifully; But I repeat it again, things are like that and maybe, (the facts show it) his departure helped the band to continue, maybe otherwise it would have been impossible. Then Depeche mode continued to exist because (I agree with who says it) the driving force of the band was always the compositional capacity of Martin Gore. Along with Gahan's voice, always a voice and a character as personal as Dave's are irreplaceable. Martin's songs, David's voice and personality, and Andy's desire to keep the ship sailing made it possible for the band to continue with dignity despite all the drawbacks, because they were the fundamental and irreplaceable part of Depeche mode.

    Ironic, from their lowest point personally came their finest work creatively. After SOFAD and Alan's departure the only 2 albums that have stood the test of time are Ultra and Playing The Angel. Everything else has been hit or miss. Either way I think that even had Alan remained, their albums would have been superior, but they would still be past their prime. All bands have a pinnacle and then roll down hill, with the occasional late career creative renaissance, in DM's case Playing The Angel. Even so, I'm still glad they continue to record decent songs, continue touring and haven't become a tribute band of themselves.

      I personally don't think it was staged. Martin looked visibly upset & uncomfortable. I think she was one of their many groupies.

      I say Dave was the problem Alan is and was the man that made me and the DM fans love their music Alan deserved much more and rightly so Alan made DM sound like DM that's why the band since has never made new ground or new hits DM must have Alan in production period

    • @rbgabor89
      @rbgabor89 5 років тому +4

      I always felt the same tbh. I mean that he was a bit pricky. I know he is a great musicians but I also felt he was always looking down on Martin, Dave and Andy because they weren't trained.

    Okay hold on they are talking with each member of the group and when they get to Dave he’s sitting around a bunch of candles like a weirdo

    • @DxModel219

      he was too consumed with Heroin at that point… not a weirdo just a band member battling with drugs like every rock star out there.
