Over the last decade, Justin Welsh has helped build two $50M+ ARR companies, teams of 150+ people, and raise over $300M in venture capital. Then, in 2019, he burned out.
Now he runs a boutique advisory firm for entrepreneurs and creates digital products for creators. He has 150,000 followers on Twitter, 250,000 followers on LinkedIn, more than 35,000 subscribers to his email newsletter, and has earned more than $2M as a solo creator.
In this episode, we talk about his approach to LinkedIn, when he decided it was time to expand to new platforms, why business can be thought of as a game, and why being Autodidactic has helped him grow quickly.

This is a great interview between two pro creators I respect! I’m still thinking about the idea that business is like a multiplayer video game, and I’m getting better at acting accordingly. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for listening, John! I've been thinking about that perspective quite a bit too.
I found a hack! UA-cam version gets released a day earlier than podcast. Now I look forward to Mondays.
It’s a secret 🤫
Hey this was the first video I watched on your channel and for me you definitely fulfilled the promise of keeping it nor only entertaining but super valuable! 60mins will forever be better than 60seconds! Thanks and look forward to watching/ listening more!
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for the heads up re: Riverside Jay - just signed up with your code!
I absolutely enjoyed this session and THE QUESTIONS you asked made it that much better! Thank you for a great time. Justin is a forever fav!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Nothing that elevates a discussion more than a well prepped and knowledgeable interviewer. I’m noticing it’s the key separator in my preferred shows
Insight-packed interview. Justin is brilliant❤
I just listened to the podcast and now I'm making myself the YT version with a notepad and a pen.
Jay you are a beast in interview ! Thank you both !
This is the feedback we like to see!
This interview was SO well done. Not to mention great content/conversation. Really enjoyed the cuts to Jay's reflections and background as well other clips based on what was discussed. Keep it up! 💪
thank you my friend!
Finally, I found an edited podcast format. Well done!
Glad you enjoy it!
Mad props for interviewing Justin, love his stuff and love his dedication to hustle.
He's a legend!
I have watched about 4 of these interviews with Justin, and I think this one was the best to me. I liked it bc of the specificity in which Jay got Justin to speak on. Jay’s questions show his expertise on the topic. He did a great job of getting into the details with Justin, and I learned a lot!
I've been gleaning a lot from interviews with Jordan lately and really appreciate the honesty y'all shared here. Thanks!
thanks for watching!
You’ve got a pleasant voice, Jay
Looking forward to watching this later Jay! Added to the Watch Later list!
I think you’ll like it! Let me know what you think.
Love the video and transparency of Justin :)
This was super inspiring and valuable! I found your first video podcast episode through a newsletter I follow, so I don’t have context re: your audio podcast. But so far I’ve LOVED these two episodes - so jam-packed with ACTUAL content instead of bs fluff. Great choice of guests. ☺️
So glad you enjoyed it! Do you remember which newsletter referred you? We have 100+ audio-only episodes if you want to go down the rabbit hole!
@@CreatorScienceYT I’m not 100% sure because I follow a few, but it was one of these likely: The Tilt, Stacked Marketer, Morning Brew. Maybe the first one since that’s specifically about content? I’ll definitely check out your audio podcast. ☺️
This is valuable stuff. Thank you for sharing this
Wow, Jay, you are such a great interviewer.
Ever since l got to know about Justin last week. I have been on the lookout for content with Justin, so somehow l accidentally found this interview
Thank God I did. Your questions are on point like his work approach.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Emily!
I love the way you've been creative in combining the interview with commentary, it's really captivating and reinforcing those key points is so much easier to digest a lengthy interview
That's exactly what we're going for - thanks for that positive reinforcement! 🙏
Great Share really enjoyed that !
Great interview Jay! Both of you have so much to offer and great advice. Also, thanks for bringing out the real!
Great Podcast i just wanted to know what justin welsh do and i got to know alot from this podcast also you ask really insightful questions
Amazing conversation!
Thanks Nishat!
Awesome interview packed with cool insight. It's great when you can get into the mindset of creators. Thank you, both!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and letting me know!
Great interview! Thanks for posting this one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this interview Jay.
As someone that's learning "LinkedIn Broatry" myself I can relate to the journey Justin went through 😂
hahaha i’m glad you enjoyed it Greg!
You always hear about going to where your audience is, but I think this is the first time I've heard it said to go where you want to make content. Gamechanging!
I have got to tell you ma8 you just had me spiraling, I watched this Video this morning, And then I jumped down a Notion Rabithole, and the result is extatic.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@CreatorScienceYT, enjoyed & loved it! It is rare that a video is so good that I want to watch it more than once! Seriously, thank you!
THis was so easy to watched and I learnt a lot. Thanks man!
Glad to hear it!
Man!!!! This was a GREAT interview. I loved it ❤
So glad to hear it!! Thanks for watching.
Great information
Excellent questions and follow-ups, Jay...as if you were in the minds of us listeners. Thank you. Linkedin has been a perfect platform for stealth strategists that have grown global platforms, mostly as a solopreneur (solonaire, my term) for years. I've used it the most to become the authority in my niche, so a first-hand witness it works.
So glad you enjoyed it, Anaezi!
@@CreatorScienceYT ♥
Everyone says to pick one thing to be known for on LinkedIn, what if I started my career in marketing but now in management and love both? What do I do?
Thanks for the great episode
Thanks for enjoying it!
let's GO!! 11:40 that's what it's all about
YES!
Great show! What CRM software would you recommend for solo entrepreneurs? How do you narrow down your niche? Do you have a narrow niche when you started? Or do you experiment and figure it out along the way?
I don't think you need specific CRM software - a simple spreadsheet or Airtable will work. You just need to keep track of contact info, the last date of contact, and notes from those interactions.
Narrowing down your niche I think comes down to asking what unique insight you bring to the table: creatorscience.com/earned-insight/
Experimenting is how most of us get there!
damn, my eyes light up when i saw those templates!!!! Where can I buy those!
No audio😭😭😭😭😭😭 Love, Justin!
oh no! We hear the audio - can you try restarting or looking at your audio output settings?
🤩
Hello there, God bless your efforts.
As a new linkedin enthusiast, i have a general enquiry.
Is it a good practice to run my business on my personal linkedin account and not on a business page.
The reason that i can sync a list of contacts directly to my personal account,
whereas the business page is bounded with the following page limitation.
What is the right practice regarding my enquiry, any advice, I would be so grateful for it.
I'm actually hosting a guest soon to talk about this exact question. His name is Daniel Murray, and he's a big proponent of LinkedIn Business pages. Personally, I've been using my personal page, and I find that to be easier to deal with.
Very cool episode to be honest I used to think this guy wasn't real just an image someone used as an authority figure.
hahaha well I'm glad I could show you the contrary
@@CreatorScienceYT Thank you for this great insight throughout
Im not super impressed lol is it me?
my biggest regret is that i didn't keep writing in 2017 on LinkedIn. I gained 5K followers in one year and didn't have the first clue about why it was important to have a brand.
