Spitting fire to complex rhythms, the California native of Indian origin, Raja Kumari, is back with her latest single, “N.R.I.” which stems from the duality of being from two different cultures, while being told you don’t quite belong in either of them.
Speaking about the video, Grammy nominated Raja Kumari says, “The video for N.R.I. was shot in early March, and I had just 24 hours to prepare for my return flight to LA in the middle of all the Covid chaos, but I was passionate about including both my hometowns within the video. I wanted to show the world where I really lived and where I had been for the last 3 years.
I knew N.R.I. would never be complete without both sides of the story, and hope you’ll share your #mynristory with the world as well. The remaining part of the video was shot in Los Angeles during the Grammy week in February. Little did we know that would be the last time to film before Quarantine.”

@Evan Davis There is a lot more to it that I believe you don't really seem to understand. That exact attitude itself is what the problem really is. Yes, there is a border problem, yes people that are seeking refuge from Latin America are denied access and are facing horrible conditions at the border (I don't deny that one bit). But discussing one's issues while tearing down another one won't help anything for the better. There are many struggles first-generation American born citizens have to face. If you are Indian and American at the same time, often for Americans we are not American enough, we often get racially stigmatized to the point it becomes too common and considered normal. While on the other hand, Indians think we live in privilege and wealth, with no understanding of hard work or earnings. That we simply are too uncultured for their understandings and spoiled. But that in itself is the issue right there. You see most of us from the beginning have seen our parents struggle at one point or another in America, we have seen the financial struggles our parents have gone through to make it here. That's what fuels us to work even harder than our parents. We never stated that we don't appreciate our parents for bringing us here because we do. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be living in such a great facility than what our family has back home. We love that we live in a country full of opportunities and jobs. However, that shouldn't negate the fact that there are a lot of struggles that Indian Americans do go through. We go through struggles involving racism, our identity, and really being proud of our ancestry. It isn't a trivial matter. When one learns to accept themselves in all of their glory, only then can they really achieve greatness. Undermining someone else's struggles is the wrong approach to unity my friend.
@Evan Davis The best way to unite and understand is to see things and situations from another perspective. Yes, the border crisis is a much bigger deal than being stuck in two worlds. But venting or wanting to speak up on our own experiences should not be such a big deal. We have the right to speak on issues that do pertain to us as well. What Raja Kumari is doing, is showing how Indian Americans feel, she is expressing her emotions through her art. That is justifiable in every right, and in every way.
