The name 'Pesa' comes from PS which stands for Pojazdy Szynowe, a Polish-language railway vehicle. Pesa was born from the Bydgoszcz of PKP Polskie Koleje Państwowe, Polish railways. From the 1950s to 1998 the repair shop was called ZNTK Bydgoszcz, Zakłady Naprawcze Taboru Kolejowego.
For many years after its foundation it repaired steam locomotives and carriages. After the collapse of the Communist regime in Poland, ZNTK Bydgoszcz was made independent in 1991. In 2001 the company became Pojazdy Szynowe Pesa Spółka Akcyjna Holding and activities focused on the design and construction of transport.
The choice was successful with the birth of products such as metrotranvia (LRV) in Warsaw, Gdańsk and other cities in Poland, Hungary, Germany and Kazakhstan; and electrotrenes and diesel (EMU and DMU) in Poland, Italy, Kazakhstan and Germany. Pesa signed a contract on May 29, 2009 of $1.5 billion. of złoty (US$460 million) for 186 trams to Warsaw, and on September 12, 2012 Pesa signed a contract with Deutsche Bahn, for 470 Diesel multiple units (DMU), for 1.2 billion. of Euro.

La scelta fu vincente con la nascita di prodotti come la metrotranvia (LRV) di Varsavia, Danzica e altre città in Polonia, Ungheria, Germania e Kazakistan; e di elettrotreni e diesel (EMU e DMU) in Polonia, Italia, Kazakistan e Germania. Pesa segnò un contratto il 29 maggio 2009 di 1,5 mld. di złoty (460 mln. di dollari US) per 186 tram per Varsavia, e il 12 settembre 2012 Pesa siglò un contratto con Deutsche Bahn, per 470 Diesel multiple unit (DMU), per 1,2 mld. di Euro.
