- The Maeklong Railway, also known as the Mae Klong Railway, is a notable railway in Thailand, famous for its unique route that includes passing directly through the bustling Maeklong Railway Market. This market is renowned for its fresh seafood and is characterized by vendors quickly retracting their awnings and shop fronts as trains approach, earning it the nickname "umbrella pulldown market." The railway spans nearly 65 kilometers (about 40 miles) from Wongwian Yai in Bangkok to Samut Songkhram in central Thailand.
Constructed in two stages, the railway began with the Mahachai Line, opened in 1904, followed by the Ban Laem Line a year later. These lines were merged in 1907 under the Maeklong Railway Ltd. Initially serving as a goods line to transport produce to Bangkok markets, the Thai government acquired it in 1926, and it underwent several transformations, including electrification and later, de-electrification. The railway is now operated by the State Railway of Thailand, featuring diesel multiple unit trains, and remains one of Thailand's slowest, emphasizing its charm and historical value rather than speed.
The Maeklong Railway's journey is divided into two sections: the eastern Mahachai Line and the Ban Laem Line, separated by the Tha Chin River, with ferry services connecting the two parts. It serves as a vital commuter rail link and a fascinating cultural and tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into the daily life and commerce of Thailand alongside its historical and engineering significance.
