- Southern gothic author Feral Kenyon reads poetry by Segovia Amil.
Treasures of Earth:
All of this here -- all of this which seems to define me;
black silk, crystal, mirror -- treasures of earth,
Hung high, blinking with the stillness of the hour,
The drowsy slow decay of the hour.
Each without life, ghosts standing before one another,
Embellished in liquid gold, dissolving time, eclipsed
in an emptiness which echos like memories of lost love.
I wait...I linger for all of this here,
yet none of it my own.
Some days it seems I have placed myself on the wave of pretend;
I am sliding down the winding staircase,
Fashioned here in some cold, unknowable world,
Bound by time.
The fruit of life itself turns in crystal spheres,
Hanging before me like a medal or gold star -- twisting, turning.
I have traded flesh and feather for glass wings,
For veils and chains.
All for the world that which is not soil, blood, or bone,
Withering away, frozen in time
in an extravagance which passes,
An extravagance which wanes like dark ooze.
When night widens, thickens, grows like a beast
In elaborate emptiness -- howling, groaning.
Before it all, I am a queen of things,
trapped in some high tower,
spirit shrouded, eclipsed in suffering.
Where is it one goes to live outside of this?
To belong to more
To wet forest
To underwater realms
To fiery cores
A piercing root
The color of rubies, to creation
The ecstasies of the natural world.
All of this which is truth, knowable treasures
just outside of me.
Where is this half of me --
a spirit which soars beyond time and space
in fleeting moments?
I must pull her back to me,
a travelling body of blood made of white fire
Her orbiting heart.
Behind my black door, I withdraw
Into oblivion
Into death like sleep
To think of her, to exist solely in my dreams.

About Treasures of Earth:
"Treasures of Earth" personifies the curse of being owned by possessions and surrounding oneself with material goods and expiration dates rather than the with company of genuine people and spiritual treasures. - Cassie Meder, director of the short film of the same name.
