- A stab in the back, a breach of trust. France's foreign minister fuming after Australia's surprise dumping of a deal for 12 French diesel-power battle ready submarines in favor of a new three-way defense partnership with the US and the UK along with Washington providing the technology for eight nuclear-powered subs. The Pacific is becoming a more volatile place.

The French subs were not battle-ready and France 24 has no idea what part the US and the UK will be putting in to the new deal. Also almost right from the start, it has been clear the French had never been serious about 60% of the cost being spent in, and 100% of construction/assembly being in Australia. There were never 4,000 jobs in this in France as Macron announced in a French shipyard in 2016 unless these boats were to be built or largely fabricated in France. The only other explanation is that Macron was simply lying to the French people when he claimed there were to be 4,000 jobs in France. One other thing. In the 1990s, the greatest number of foreign intelligence agents spying in London were Russians. The second largest was....... France.
Dear France, this is how you could have kept the deal.

@Debajit The French were warned for several months that the deal was under threat and they sent a Navy Admiral to Australia 3 weeks ago to shore up the deal but way too late the French tried to rip us off. Too Bad so sad move on. The French quoted $25 Billion but when the program was cancelled the bill was up to $90 Billion for 12 subs. Australia may be able to lease a smaller number of submarines of the same class while its own fleet is being built. This will provide for more immediate defence and give the crews much needed practical experience.
France won a contract to build 12 submarines in Australia for $50 billion dollars (AUD). They kept delaying and increasing the cost. By the time it was cancelled it was to be 60% built in Australia still no physical work started and $90 billion dollars. Who knows how much it would have cost in the end.
In that time, Australian needs have changed.
Cancellation of the contract has fees which will be paid by Australia (no back stabbing from Australia).
So why is France annoyed? Oh, they were only told about the cancellation a few hours before the public announcement.
Seeing how France is acting now, does anyone really think they would have kept it a secret?
Remember, France performed nuclear tests in near Australia even up to the 1990’s despite Australia’s protests. France bombed a ship in New Zealand in 1985 which killed someone and they tried to get out of apologising or paying compensation. France and Australia are not allies. I don’t know what that idiot talking about back stabbing from allies is on about.
The bottom line is this. The UK is a true friend of Australia, and wouldn’t be doing what France is doing now if they were in Frances position. France didn't have a better offer than that of other countries like US and Russia, or even China...
If the French Foreign Minister had watched Sky Australia over the past year he would not have been surprised as the problems with the French contract have been a frequent point of discussion. It has been clear from the discussions that the French thought they had Australia over a barrel and could keep on upping the contract price whilst delaying delivery somewhat like your nuclear power contract with Finland.
also it was a focus point on the ABC's Press Club which is available to all on youtube.
Funny, there are reports all over youtube about all these cost overruns and not one sub would be made for a decade for Australia... what were the French thinking? I know Germany is outgunning them on the dairy side of things, but milking the Australians for everything they had to get a sub?

Well Australia did sign the agreement. At some point it made sense. Sure 10 years. But that's a normal lead time. The us subs are 20 years lead time.
Figures given are meaningless without accompanying facts . Majority comments are low on facts here . Hardly more than $8 billion would have gone to France . The development was close to contract gold post markers , a little behind in places, but look at that the teething problems of the new carrier of the US . France did ask Australia if they wanted to perhaps reconvert the design to nuclear in June. Australia said no, they told France it's all OK . However Australia had already made deal or deal was underway with Yanks it turns out . This is the crucial deception referred to which may or may not make Australia liable for losses of France cos France may have been able to engage in other lucrative contracts if Australia had been forthcoming .
I think this will blow over as long as it is all done above board and throught the courts in a fair manner. France has alot of defence industry in Australia with the company Thales which has bought out some Australian companies. The Aussies will just make some more deals withFrench companies, admittedly not as big as the sub deal.

People in Australia have been moaning about this deal for a very long time, before the new deal with UK and USA. France should be more upset about the terrible deal it was trying to put on Australia so maybe the bluster currently is to deflect from what a shit deal they were trying to do.

France took this contract from Japan in 2016, perhaps partly due to domestic Australian politics that were wary of buying military hardware from Japan and antagonising China. 2. Now Australia will instead get 8 nuclear submarines for US$90 billion.
3. The french deal would have built them all in Australia (jobs for the Aussies) now most if not all will be built in the USA.
4.The costs and maintenance of nuclear submarines is extremely expensive compared to a desiel powered one. Australia a country of just 30 million this is going to be very expensive.
5. Technology is rapidly developing, the 1st submarines is only be ready in 10 years by that time underwater drones would be available and will probably hunt submarines in packs using AI tech. Submarines in 10 years time could possibly be obsolete tech by then.
I always say follow the money who benefits monetarily form all these weapons deal's. BUT if the Aussies hate the Chinese this much let them enjoy, it will not end well????????????
France can also play backstabbing and sell those submarines to China. xD

It's a French thing. Fashion is everything, even building subs. Ohh ha ha right?
US scaremongering has worked. First scared the Aussies from the Chinese and then sold them the subs. Great job.
No, I think the CCP's recent rhetoric and hostility towards HK, Taiwan, India and Philippines as well as the belt and road debt trap diplomacy as well as fiery speaches from their president have done plenty to scare them into the arms of the US.
France and the EU need to change their direction on China if they are to be taken seriously on the world stage, And why are France and the EU surprising the Anglosphere have a club all of their own.
China is the coming superpower - US is in decline - UK has only memories of the Empire. Send HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales to show the chinese how strong you are and history repeats.
The French company Thales is still one of largest defence contractors in Australia and makes bazillions. The submarine deal was doomed when French naval group wanted less Australian content because this was an election promise to give South Australia jobs.

France 24 should get over this submarine deal already. France cannot compete against the US military industry complex. Obviously Australia was going to go with the US.
They are using British subs not American subs. France can't punish Britain without harming France too, so they hit the US instead. France would prefer to recall the UK and Australia ambassadors but that isn't really an option.
@@tomx641 I think the Americans had to sign off on the technology, but also to send a clear signal to China.

Helping an ally when ask is a flimsy excuse when you know a contract exists between both your allies.
You could have spoken to your other ally first.
This 'betrayal' of allies mantra is complete and utter nonsense.
The US suspended arms sales to Egypt in 2013 due to human rights concerns and the French jumped straight in and supplied them with weapons culminating in the most recent contract for 30 Rafale fighter jets this year.
There were several exit clauses in the contract both countries knew about, Australia simply exercised one of these clauses.

We get that. But no-one can understand why the French can’t see that they don’t deserve any other country’s real trust and brotherhood.

A few months negotiations? try 18 months. The French were late twice with deadlines then cut the Australian content from 90% to 60% then the price went from 40 billion to 90 billion dollars plus the US and UK deal was too good to refuse. The rest of the EU members will be shocked and would not want to deal with Australia or US where possible. The trust is totally lost.
As an American, it makes no sense that France was cut off with this deal. And Australia, particularly, should have talked with France at some point.
They were talking for seven years. Before they gave in and went to someone more reliable.
France did everything wrong. Swiss also cut off a deal with them.
The Australian could have asked for nuclear technology. ..and the French have territories in the Pacific.
