Fredo never seems to read a room correctly. Now that I've been diagnosed as autistic as an adult, I see the traits more clearly in TV and film characters, and I wonder about Fredo 🧐 either way, he's entirely unsuited for this life. The idea of him as the Don is entirely ridiculous.
I like how each son the Godfather has embodies a different trait of his - Sonny his rage and wrath, Tom his intelligence and quiet way of reading people, Fredo his warmth and appreciation of the good life, and Michael his cold, calculating skill and ruthlessness and dedication to pursue whatever he's decided he wants.

That shot of Clemenza pointing his pistol at head-level with the silhouette in front of the door is ICONIC.
Clemenza, if you remember from the last movie was the portly fellow that coached Michael on getting the gun from behind the toilet reservoir, was cooking the ragu and slicing the garlic with a razor, and also said the iconic line "Leave the gun, take the cannoli". It's a shame he couldn't come back for this film due to a dispute with the studio, so they wrote him off as having a "heart attack" and the character of Frankie Pentangeli was created to take his place.

The last scene where they flashed back to Sonny era, yes it’s a contrast of the plans Michael had for his life, but it also serves to show us how Michael was always alone and isolated within the family. Addie, I'm impressed that you caught the cold look Michael gives to Al Neri while he's hugging Fredo, supposedly forgiving him. Most first-time viewers miss that, and don't realize a signal has been sent. Al doesn't seem to like the idea much, glancing down, apparently not happy -- but we know he's a good soldier and will do what he's told. That scene is a great example of the often subtle writing, direction, and camera work that makes these movies so special.

.. and cut to Michael as he slowly raises his pitch black gaze, resting it on the hitman Neri, who immediately knows, and the audience knows.

What happened between Frank Pentangeli and his brother was something almost telepathic. Frank knew that his brother was saying, "Don't do this. Don't betray your padrone. Remember the law of omertà [silence]." Michael knew they were both old school as well as brothers, so no words were needed. He had only to fly the brother over to the US and back.

Writ large, the overall action of the protagonist here is "patriarch preserves family." Michael's actions are all about advancing the family's interests, and he does his best to protect the family and keep everyone close-knit and together. Yet, as hard as he tries to preserve his family, he loses it. He utterly fails in his action, which is the very definition of a tragic hero - the hero who strives to achieve something but doesn't obtain it. By the way (mild spoiler alert) this is the same story found in "Fiddler on the Roof" and "King Lear," amongst others.

Also love how you hinted towards the end that Michael wouldn't have any family left, the way things were going, and....yeah. And it's brilliant how in the midst of all the "Mob" activity, the juxtaposition between him and his father, the differences in how they moved, and how that effected the family structure is really at the heart of the movie. Great reaction Addie like always, this is the finest example of when a sequel is superior to its predecessor. The Godfather Part II is one of the best films of all-time. A masterpiece. It's that simple. And some fun facts about this movie, Robert De Niro spent four months learning to speak the Sicilian dialect of Italian in order to play Vito Corleone, and he only speaks eight words of english during the movie. Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro are actors winning Oscars for playing the same character, no wonder that this movie won six Academy Awards, and it is the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Did you notice? Vito meets Clemenza and Tessio very early in his criminal career (they're the ones eating in his apartment). Clemenza is seen eating a lot - so he gets fat. Remember in the first movie when Michael was in Sicily and his father's friend Don Tommasino was in a wheelchair? Now you know why - one of Don Ciccio's guards shot him during the revenge scene. When the men were in Havana, they were visiting a very bawdy place. The star performer was known as Superman because of his alleged anatomy. The actor who played the senator also plays an officer in the beginning of Apocalypse Now. You did see the look between Michael and Neri when Fredo was at their mother's funeral. Too many reactors talk over that moment and don't pay attention to small details like that - details that are important to those who pay attention, just like in real mob life. It's the little things that will get you whacked. Oh, I forgot to mention. When Vito and his friend go to the theater, that's Genco Abbandando. Vito's good friend and Vito works in Genco's father's grocery store. The movie doesn't go into it, but Genco was Vito's first consiglieri and the olive oil importing business was named Genco.

But then in this movie Michael winds up having his version of Luca, Al Neri, kill his brother. That's the tragedy of this story. It's not just that he took over the family business. Great reaction, Addie. This movie is before my time, but it's one of my favorites. Btw, the $2 Million cash that Fredo was carrying in the suitcase in Cuba in 1957 just days prior to the 1957 Cuban revolution (in which Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba as a brutal Communist Dictator)...in today's dollars in 2023, that $2 Million cash in 1957 is equivalent to $22 Million in cash in 2023.
And I learned an interesting factoid in the past few years about this movie. It turns out that the actor, John Cazale, who plays Fredo Corleone (Michael's older brother) died only a few short years after this movie, in 1978 at the age of 42 from cancer. I understand that he was a great guy in real life. He left behind a fiance who loved him dearly...she was an up-and-coming Hollywood actress at that time. Her name is Meryl Streep. 💜

They did an interesting thing on TV some time after the second movie was released. They had a week-long mini-series, it was the two movies combined, but in chronological order, so first we saw all of the "origin story" flashback scenes, then the events of the first movie (with the more recent flashback scenes from the second movie included where they belong). I was really young when it happened so I didn't see it and wouldn't have wanted to, but I do remember there was a lot of hype about it, because both movies were a phenomenon, and this was before home video became ubiquitous, so sometimes it was literally a major event when big deal movies played on the small screen for the first time.

Take it from me. That version does not do the film justice. It makes it a boring slog to get through and utterly ruins the quality. How Roth gave himself away.... by saying that Frank (3rd in command in the Corleone organization, handling DAY TO DAY operations) was considered "small potatoes". Roth saying the THIRD in line (of the ENTIRE Corleone Family) was "small potatoes" indicated to Michael that Roth intended to wipe out ALL the "command structure" of his Family in order to leave the Family without authority, which Roth (and his people) would move in to take over without having to take over the Family by bits and pieces over a long period of time.
Basically, Roth admitted (unwittingly) that he was going to betray Michael all along. Which is why there was the added "dig" when they tried to kill Frank of "Michael says hello" so that Frank would believe that Michael had betrayed HIM as a "final thought". The fact that he survived, and acted upon that thought by turning on Michael was simply an added benefit to Roth when the hit on Frank failed.

Tommasino was crippled by the shotgun blast during the assassination. We see the older Tommasino in the first Godfather film; he had taken over Ciccio's regime, and he helped protect Michael during his exile in Corleone.

The Godfather, Parts I and II, are twin tragic stories; the stories of Vito and Michael.
Vito dreamed of Michael being a big shot who could pull the strings so the Corleone family would never be under the thumb of such men. Unfortunately, the family business drew Michael in after the attempt on Vito's life and the death of Sonny.
Michael tried to make the family business legitimate to make good on Vito's dream, even if delayed a generation or two. Unfortunately, the demands of the family business caused him to lose his family.
In my opinion, The Godfather, Parts I and II, are together the best movie ever made.

Part 3 is not inferior to the first two in any way. Especially after all of the artistic revelations that Coppola has mad in the years since it's release. It's his most personal film of all three by far. It has the best and only true ending of all three films. It has Al Pacino's best range as an actor. Not only is Pacino fascinating in his portrayal as a more sophisticated, conflicted and older Michael, he also brings back the warmth of Michael from the beginning of the first movie as well as a brief appearance of the cold blooded sociopathic Michael of Part 2. Coppolas demonstration of innocence with the appearance of Sofia is better than any I've seen in any art film, where that technique is usually used. Part 3 is more of a sophisticated art film than the first two films, which is why so many people didn't understand it. Art films use metaphorical techniques that mainstream audiences usually don't understand. Coppola uses those techniques in Part 3 to explain why the Corleone family failed while the Coppola family has continued to thrive in real life.
