“Officer Down” is an attempt to broaden the dialogue around police violence and race relations in America by telling two sides of an inter-related story.
One perspective addresses frustration and rage around violence towards police; particularly the senseless assassinations of innocent officers who put themselves in harm’s way in the process of doing their jobs. The companion perspective addresses the repeated and unjustified manslaughter by police of innocent black American citizens and the lack of consequences for the officers involved.
Systems of oppression are only broken from the inside out. “Officer Down” is an attempt to look inside the system so that we can break free of the narratives and create a new one.

Vext wrote, “I have been reading many confused comments regarding our song ‘Officer Down’ this past week and this is where I stand - These lyrics are written to serve as a productive conversation starter addressing the issues of documented police brutality and more specifically the media’s slanderous and false projection of all law enforcement.”
Vext continued, “We in Bad Wolves are NOT an anti cop band. As a boy who grew up in NYC during 911 and first hand witnessed the courageous efforts of state and federal law enforcements as well as EMS and Firefighters (who) put their lives on the line to save victims of terror attacks, my reverence for the men and women who serve these offices can be no higher. They are as important to this country as the military branches that defend our nation and its freedom.”
The singer added, “As a personal friend of the Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney, members of NYPD, LAPD and a volunteer who has brought anti drug and alcohol policy events to schools along side the LAPD Narcotics Division I find it laughable the ignorant hateful dribble being spewed in some of these comments. So to all the snowflake keyboard warriors out there, YOUR MISS-INTERPRETATIONS ARE NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY.”
soulessphilosopher His song starts with the most hateful racial slur humans have ever invented and he focuses on the officers who are killed, even though this number is dwarfed by the number of innocent black men who are murdered by police. This isn’t a war where we’re counting the victims on both sides. It’s not equal. It’s incomparable. Yes, it is noble of police to put themselves in harms way for us, but at the very least they had a choice in their profession. Every single black man is forced into harms way because of the colour of their skin, because police choose to overreact to their unwarranted fear of black men, perpetuated by American films, the media, and racial slurs like the one he used which reduces a human being to a stereotype. If he was truly trying to be neutral he’s done a pretty shit job of it.

I just saw this song performed live this past Saturday. With the sub par quality of the sound system at the venue, the only intelligible lyrics of this song were "hands up dont shoot" which has become associated mostly with BLM. Situations like that may incite some of the confusion on the songs meaning.

It's not just about bad cops shooting innocents and corruption on their side. They clearly state in the description it's about both sides, the garbage cops that misuse their power, and the idiot civilians/criminals that are ambushing the cops just doing their job properly.
You can still be pro-police and acknowledge there's some fucked up individual law enforcers out there. You can back the police and military personnel but still disagree with the actions of some of them, and what the higher ups do. You can also disagree with a song's message entirely but still enjoy the music itself. Music is a powerful way to get thoughts flowing and bring up issues for conversing and debate. That's what made bands like Rage Against The Machine so popular, along with the quality songwriting by the bands, of course. Get's people talking, and gets both sides of the story coming up, and rarely do you see songs strong with political ideas actually addressing both sides equally, like this one does.
Fuck the shitty cops that don't have the public's best interests in mind and abuse the respect and power the badge and oath gives them, and fuck the people who cut innocent officers' lives short due to actions of the minority in the police force and brain washing of the media. Also, fuck biased news sources that takes clear sides, and skews stories to try and control the thoughts and opinions of the viewers.
Metal has such a huge place in my heart and to have such an AMAZING band address an issue that impacts me directly means the absolute world to me! I honestly can’t thank these guys enough- I know black people aren’t really the usual demographic this genre targets, but to have this band come out of the woodwork talking about this is just..yeah. I’m blown away lol.

Life matters. It's not that difficult to say. It's also an extraordinarily obvious statement that shouldn't need to be said. It is unfortunate when someone innocent is killed, but it is often the result of that person failing to obey an officer's orders, acting in a manner that is unbelievably idiotic and leading officers to believe he is armed, or in the commission of a crime. We don't need to look at officers, often times, when this occurs. We need to look to the media, black lives matter in particular, and the community - both fueling a false narrative that officers are "gon' get you" and out to kill - especially if you're black. The reactions fueled by this are reactions of hostility (which results in people acting indignant, refusing to obey orders, and feeling entitled to be above the law), and fear (which results in people acting like absolute morons and failing to obey orders).The blood is more often than not on their hands for fueling hostility toward law enforcement, and said false narrative.
T J I 100% agree! I personally feel like ALL lives matter. Nobody is more important than another. A life is a life and that person is a child of some bodies, possibly a daddy or mother, a wife or husband, etc etc. When I told Zach that it was racist to say "ALL lives matter," it's because that's how a lot of African American folks feel since "Black Lives Matter" came out. I feel like ALL lives matter and will always treat people with respect and kindness regardless of their skin color or job occupation. This song speaks volumes.

Their new singer blows and when I saw them they only played one song off this album being No Masters and it was awesome to hear it live but the rest of the shit was kinda boring with a couple good riffs here and there but their new singer was atrocious, if I could've seen them when they still had Tommy that would've been a hell of a show

As an army MP, my job is to keep a garrison environment safe just as any civilian officer would keep his community safe, except I'm protecting my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, as well as their own families. When I work the gates in the morning, I greet everyone with a smile on my face and tell them to have a blessed day. Now dont get me wrong, honestly, I like the song not because of the meaning, but just because it's a good sounding song. With that being said, it's hard to get around the two sided description, with the lyrics kinda making it redundant in a way. I love bad wolves and I love their music, but I wont overlook the fact that this song has a issue with picking its sides. It says it represents both sides of the conflict, however, the lyrics say otherwise. There are bad cops in this world, but that should never mean other cops are just as bad as them, including me. I do my job and I want to make sure people are safe. Just as you wouldn't call all civilians criminals because someone robbed a store or killed someone. Before you paint over us with a broad brush, broaden your horizon first
