You could achieve a similar effect for sure. A compressor would affect the volume more than “carving” out some space in the frequency spectrum but it’s definitely another way to make your dialogue stand out 😄👍🏼
Trackspacer 2 is a great plugin, based on using vocals/dialogue (or any other signal) as a frequency dependent sidechain to trigger compression/ducking. The advantage is that once it's set, you can leave it on without having to adjust fade in/outs. If you deal with dialogue on a regular basis or are doing music as well, it's highly recommended
WOW This is so amazing!!!, I really needed this cause my background music keeps affecting my audio in my youtube videos. Now I know how to fix it thank you
Not a fcp user but can't wait to try this out in lightworks :) thank you for explaining the mechanics, not just the shortcuts, so that it doesn't matter what we use

EQ is OK as as far as it goes. If Final Cut would add a proper audio mixer (like in DaVinci Resolve) then we could use things like ducking compression for dialogue and music. Not to mention final mastering of the complete audio track. It’s astonishing Apple still hasn’t provided mixing capabilities despite frequent requests from users.
Yeah I would love to have ducking (as well as other audio features) in FCP. I made a video about 10 Features I Would Love to See in FCP and a proper audio mixer was one of them.
@@Brad_West I sincerely hope it happens. A too-often scenario for me is realizing I overdid an effect like de-ssing on possibly a bunch of projects and having to go back and correct everything clip-by-clip. Nightmare! Making everything a compound clip and then editing audio last is an option but not natural to the way I work. Oh, well - that's my groan session over with. Sorry to bend your ears!
Yeah I hear you! I feel the same way. Having a role-based mixer window in FCP would be ideal. Hopefully the team at Apple incorporates that some day 😬🤞🏼
Multiband sidechain compression would be the ideal solution for this as the frequencies would only be ducked when you’re speaking. Thanks for the idea .
Great tip! Super useful for my client’s work right now. And I didn’t know that we can group audio tracks! Always learning something neww with your videos
It’s essentially the exact same technique. By EQing those frequencies out, you’re making space for the dialogue. If you’re making space for boomy voices with a track that has a lot of low end, 200Hz would work well. I personally have always used 1200Hz and in some situations I bring it down to around 800Hz-1kHz and that has always worked for me 😄👍🏼
That's a quick little fix, but use a compressor and sidechain the music to the main voiceover channel and keep the full eq integrity of the song and have it duck under the voice while talking so it sits nice together in the mix. Lookup up "sidechain compression techniques" .
Hey Josh. Great idea, unfortunately FCP doesn’t give us the option to do side chain compression. That is something I always did when mixing in Pro Tools. With FCP being “roles” based as opposed to “track” based, there doesn’t seem to be a way to choose an input for the side chain compressor. Hopefully that is a feature Apple will give us FCP users in future 😄🤞🏼
@@Brad_West ahhh ok, sorry I didn't know that wasn't an option in Fcpx. I assumed you could since the audio plugins are the stock ones from Logic Pro I figured it had that functionality. I'm new to final cut so there's that as well haha 😅 you're vids are great btw man, def helping me learn lots!
Yeah they are the logic plugins and they even have a drop down with side chain options but it does nothing. 🙄 I really hope that Apple gives the people what they want 😂🤞🏼
@@Brad_West ahhh thanks! I swear I read through your whole description but I just didn’t see it (I do now 🙏). Then one more question… is it mostly up to date and/or is there a document that points out any significant differences since you made the course? (I’m guessing since it’s “the basics”, not much changes. )
Haha no problem 😆👊🏼 Yeah in terms of the basics, everything in that course still applies to the latest version. 10.6.2 just came out which has a few new features which obviously won’t be covered like dupe detection, voice isolation, etc and the built in track tracker from 10.6.1. I do have a tracking video on the channel though which covers the basics of that 😄 Hope that helps! 🤞🏼

You're welcome!! Now that you know the trick, you'll probably use it on every video. I know I do.
Great video, thanks so much.

Thanks, brilliant video… made such a big difference 👏

Looks like a great plugin! Unfortunately FCP doesn't support sidechain functionality. This would work in Logic though 😄
Great tip! I created a Music EQ For Dialogue preset. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome Eric! Simple little trick, but one I use all the time 😄👍🏼
This will definitely come in handy!!!! Thanks for the content!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks for checking it out 😄🤙🏼
Oh this is super useful! Thanks Brad!
Glad you found it helpful Colin 😄🙌🏼
That's a great tip. Normally I export and edit audio on Ableton to apply a Sidechain compressor, but I've never tried this eq cut. Tks for that ;)
I wish we had an option to use a side compressor in FCP. Maybe that’s a feature we’ll see one day 😄🤞🏼

Hi Brad, what is the difference between this method and EQ Carving? Ripple Training and Dylan Bates talk about EQ carving at 200HZ as opposed to 1200.
