  • Finally got the cubesat integrated with the radio board. And the best part of all, it actually works! I can communicate between radios, enabling the most important part of any satellite -- telemetry.
    There is still plenty to test out, specifically a long range trial. I would also like to write out the equations I've been working on to determine the practical distance this radio can transmit from.

    This whole series has been so cool thus far!! Not only is it fun to watch, it's also very educational. I especially admire how much time you spend on creating a reliable design with redundancy, debug points etc. Did you already work on CubeSat projects in the past? Or did you have some good resources for it (books etc.)?

    Look for good rf reject and low esr. No crazy high impedance value required.

    Speaking from experience, you really need a radio that can be on and capable to receive packets all the time, if your radio consumes 150mA in receive mode then its worth investigating if you can do something about it. You also really need to broadcast sat health data periodically, at least every 10 minutes, more frequently if power budget allows. Without these broadcasts you will not be able to get help from volunteer networks and existing ground stations for locating your satellite after launch.At least 10 minutes because then you at least have a chance to receive a packet during very good overpasses, something like 5 or 3 minutes would actually be much better until you get Norad ID and up-to-date TLE-s for it. You can extend the interval back to 10 minutes once you are sure that the TLE is actually tracking your sat and not somebody else's. In a month or so the sats will drift apart enough for incorrect assignments to become obvious. Speaking of power budget, I really doubt that the pathetic little 30mW cells are going to be sufficient for anything. I think typically cubesats are covered with Azur Space panels, best of these are close to 1W per panel and you can have 2 of them on each side of 1U sat. yes, probably expensive (I did not pay for them, so dont know the actual cost), very brittle and pain in a butt to work with, but very good.

    • @RGSAT
      @RGSAT  2 роки тому +1

      I'm certain I'd need to get this fully tested and certified. No certifications from OpenLST, but it is reassuring that they have used this sort of design on other cubesats

    This is amazing! Last night I searched "How to build a cubesat" and your video was the first result. I have now gone through your entire series and must say it is extremely impressive what you've accomplished! I will be following along with your progress, best of luck!
    I have three questions, would you be open to having a camera showing your face as you walk us through? When you’re ready, could you walk us through your Rust code? There aren’t too many channels that talk about that stuff. And finally, have you decided on a payload/mission?

    • @RGSAT
      @RGSAT  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you!
      To answer your questions:
      - Someday I think I will
      - I've done some walk throughs of the software from a high level. Walking through the code itself might be too in-the-weeds to be interesting for many people.
      - not sure on the payload! Still trying to figure that out

      @@RGSAT Thanks for taking the time to respond.
      - Have you heard of the Libre Space Foundation? It might be an interesting venture for you to present your work at their conference!
      - On that note, they have multiple videos of people sharing their ideas for space related missions, maybe one can give you an idea on the payload. One that I found particularly interesting is this one ua-cam.com/video/tRo1BCj_4n8/v-deo.html

    I was just wondering, why are you making this cubesat ?

    I didn't search for anything LEO-related for quite some time, but yesterday and today I briefly talked with my friend who's kind of close to the stuff. We didn't talk anything technical, in fact nothing related to satellites at all. He mentioned name of a company that's in this business. Once. Over a phone. Now YT suddenly suggesting me this sort of videos. What a coincidence.

    Hello,
    Very nice video, I was hoping you could help me design a communication module based on open LST, but while designing I found out some components are not available and I have to find alternatives. I am new to PCB design and I have many questions and followed some videos as suggested by you-Michael Ossmann. For starter I would just like to replicate OpenLST.

    I’ve been following these videos because they are very overlapping with a LoRa repeater project I am working on. I’m curious though - it seems you’ve budgeted power and features for a self sufficient cubesat but not for any payload. There’s no science or data collection or anything else aspect to your cubesat.
    So my question. Is, in this not at all theoretical cubesat you’re building, what is the intended payload?

    Would LoRa be better for communications? It uses less power than FSK, for a given SNR.
    On the other hand, the IC for LoRa does lots of onboard processing. Compared to the simplest FSK transceiver with a microcontroller with ECC memory, a LoRa integrated transceiver would be less resistant to radiation-caused crashes
