I’m definitely guilty of overusing the word sorry haha. This was a good and much needed video. Thanks for sharing!
No worries! I am terrible for saying sorry. Even if someone bumps into me I apologise to them...how ridiculous is that?
@@EnglishLikeANative I don't think it is ridiculous, on the contrary you are considered as a person with good manner and humility. The circumstances can make us understand very easily who was distracted and bumped into another. If this person considers you are responsible for it after hearing your sorry, it means that he/she is dull and/or stupid. This " sorry " is like the lubricating oil of our society to allow it to proceed smoothly. It is not always necessary to regard it as an expression of apology to the letter. We Japanese also use very often the alternative words " Sumimasen" or "Gomennasai" in our language in similar situations and we don't feel ashamed of it at all because these words come out even spontaneously. When people stop saying these words, I am sure that our society will become cold and the human relationship will grow very tense and nervous, bringing even more mental or physical conflicts among people.

hello, Anna, great lesson, as usual. i remember, when i've just come back from london "sorry" was my parasite word and i used it everywhere, but now its much better. thanks for ur time. love and hugs💕
Hi Anna you are my favourite teacher that is fantastic you very kind of people

Tanks for share your tips, I love your british accent Mrs Anna.
Thank you for sending me this lesson and accepting me in your class today !. I haven't completed yet the exercise you charged me to do about the last course !
Really helpful and informative. Way of delivery is tremendously good.
In Liverpool the people says sorry for EVERYTHING!!! “Sorry lad”, “sorry love”... hahaha
Hi Anna! I learnt a lot, I excuse my self for not pay attention before!
Thank you Anna , for this amazing video.
Glad you liked it! :)
HI, BRITISH FRIEND, LOVE YOU. YOU'RE AWESOME. THANK A LOT.
Thank you, NurAlam!
interesting topic. Initially I though you were talking about Canadians because being overly polite is a stereotypical characteristic of Canadians. The use of the word "sorry" is pretty much embedded in our vocabulary. Especially when compared to our southern neighbours.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ANA FOR YOUR LOVELY VIDEO, I APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. GOD BLESSED YOU!
THANK YOU ............
Thanks so much, i really was doing a lots of mistakes, thank you very much anna❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the video. It's great. And I also want to say that Sensation English is quite useful for me to learn more efficiently. Thanks for that.
Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad you find it useful.
I love the way you present examples. It's definitely makes me to stare at you always.. thank you so much ma'am.
wow! exactly i tried to be polite all the time, but it gets old the sorry, thank you so much for this video it makes my life way easier, you are so lovely darling, i appreciate your time and effort in this video, lots of love from USA.
Thanks for learn
'Sorry' is extremely polite. It will certainly never offend anyone, but can make us look timid when saying it too often.. 'Sorry' has more or less replaced 'I beg your pardon' and 'come again.'
I agree, sorry is meant to be polite and it changes in the context. It does not necessary mean you are apologising, again it depends on the context.
For example:
If someone came up to me and said "do you have a minute?" I would certain think that they were being extremely rude because I might be busy but if they were to say "Sorry, do you have a minute" I think better of them.
Another example, if I was waiting for someone and they arrived late and their very first response was "Thanks for waiting" I will also think they were being rude as well. I will expect them to say "Sorry, I am late I was followed by their reason."
Also, in a resturants, Nandos, etc you not expected to know the waiter's name unless they introduce it to you. But if I was a waiter and a customer came up to me and said excuse me I would think they were being rude because I might be busy. It will be better to say "Sorry, excuse me followed by your request".
I also agree that "sorry" has replaced a lot of words like "I beg you pardon" or "come again", etc.
In the UK we tend to say "cheers" but cheers itself has many meanings for example
1) If your were to say "cheers" in a bar it would be one thing
2) If someone gave you something maybe a gift and you said cheers it would mean thank you
3) If you went to a shop and you bought something and as you were leaving you said cheers it will mean goodbye.
But my point is the true definition of the word "cheers" refers to a clinking of glasses that why if you were to say "cheers" to an American who never set foot in the UK I can guarantee you they think that you meant drinks in a bar.
@@abbysands9510 Very good. I used to have this unique catchphrase; 'Thanks! Cheers! Thanks!' I said it without knowing it. My catchphrase became my nickname for the staff of a fast food restaurant: "Hey look" they'd say, "Here comes old Thanks Cheers Thanks,"

I recently read an interesting article on the word sorry. It’s mainly focused on Canada but talks about British usage too: nationalpost.com/news/canada/the-use-and-abuse-of-sorry-americans-do-not-say-it-the-british-do-not-mean-it-and-canadians-overdo-it

Thanks for sharing ... I realized I did a lot of mistakes while using that word ( Sorry), so lot of thanks , I learned too much ¡
What drew me to watch your video is your undeniable resemblance to my American ex-fiancée 😄 Saying sorry is also a part of the Canadian vernacular; I'm guilty of freely saying it as well. As Canada is part of the British Commonwealth, it's understandable how British traits have rubbed off on us. I shall strive to correct this unnecessary Canadian habit as per your lesson, thank you 🙂

There are lots of english studying apps or websites, why is the Sensationsenglish better?
Actually I am studying English by myself for moving to the UK, so I need some helpful tips
Sensations English is different to any other resource you will find. It’s also been put together by some of the best minds in the teaching industry. The best thing to do is try it out while it is free to everyone. They are gathering information on how students use the site so that they can make further improvements etc, so it’s a great opportunity for students to take advantage of the free offer.
English Like A Native many thanks
Do you have a immersion course for some foreign students? e.g.: some students live together for two or four weeks, a real english life, I suppose it’s amazing way to study real english, you know, we live in a non-english country.
There’s a UA-cam channel named , which has some immersion courses, but the teachers aren’t native english speakers.
Hello English queen love you so I am sorry
Well... I'm Canadian, so if you harm me and I do not express my apologize to you, I will explode!
If you are in Canada then please continue to use the word sorry as much as you like. The culture there is much more polite.
Your hair is just soooooooooo perfect!!! Goalssssss
:) thank you. I always freshly wash and blow dry my hair for filming, then I use a little bit of hairspray to try and make it look neat. I’m glad you like it.
I overuse this word. Thanks alot😍
Great
Hi,
I believe your first example clip is actually your first “sorry” replacement clip edited in by accident. As you don’t use “sorry” in the pen throw.
Also for a bit of light hearted humour, I’m sorry to be the one to point this out.
Would love to see a Welsh video!
I love you ANNA
Your lip stick is so sharp my eyes gets Dazzle I am really sorry 😆
Lol oh I’m sorry...or am I? Lol
Yes, my eyes too.
Sorry?... unless you did something wrong don't use it. Just say excuse me or something lol

I like your red colour as always ☺️❤️
I think all of us Brits says sorry more than any other word!
I sometimes tell my students that it is very common here to say say "sorry" instead on "hello" in a shop or bar. It's crazy.
It was a great video thanks beautiful baby girl
i really like the color scheme of the video, also you're gorgeous.. :)
Thank you next.....👉❤👈
I'm sorry for saying sorry....... :)
English and Irish people are definitely WAY too apologetic.
A great skit by Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan talks about how Irish people apologize if we (ourselves) trip on the footpath even if we cause no harm to anyone but ourselves lol 😂
I always do the same thing but I'm Italian
I guess I'm just overly polite 😂😂
Keren neng
I don't understand why we have to say "I am sorry" that somebody died, it was not fault. I think people overuse I am sorry too much and the end of the day the real meaning does not have the same value. English is not my first language, I really try to understand "sorry" word.
Regards,
Luis
Use it if - you make a mistake that has a negative impact on another person (like knocking over their drink or forgetting that you were supposed to meet them). - if you want show sympathy (I’m sorry to hear your cat ran away, I’m sorry about your dad)
Hope that helps.
Another way to think of it is - I am feeling sorry for you. To feel sorry for someone is to feel sad for them when they are experiencing a difficult time.
Thanks for the lesson mam! by the way red is surely your colour.:)
Thanks a lot 😊. I am glad you like red too :)

I remember when Greta said 'This Earth is dieing and the people at the top, including Monarch and their families should invest more'. I felt really awkward considering £8 Trillion [Converted from NOK] was invested into the Eco-friendly Power stations in Norway, and she insinuated it at Norway so I just said 'I'm sorry you feel that way.' Rather than mentioning this to her and saying Norway at least is trying...gosh it still bugs me a bit. Yes!!!! 🥺
I know the feeling.

I have a question :
Does sorry derive from the word "sorrow"?
I think it would make sense since -y is a feature of adjectives and the meaning is similar but I don't know...
I had to dig around a bit to find the answer. It appears that they do not come from the same word. According to the Oxford Canadian Dictionary, “sorrow” is from the Old English “sorh” or “sorg,” which meant the same, while “sorry” comes via West Germanic from the Old English sarig meaning “pained” or “distressed.”
@@EnglishLikeANative Oh,that's really interesting! Thank you very much 😁😁
