Here on the prairie (in the fall) we have majestic gold cottonwood trees, yellow ash trees, and patches of dark red sumac scattered across a menagerie of dry grass. I've always wondered how this scenery should be painted. Thanks.
Ah yes, fall, where the cadmiums rule!! Had some nice aspens near Lake Tahoe where I lived for a while, like little bits of Colorado, they were. Easy to overdo the yellows and oranges though, need some darks (conifers) to contrast and off set them otherwise you get a "cartoon"!! And often a "Looney Tune", and you feel like a "cwazy wabbit" when your painting is done!! LOL ;D
I love your explanation of colour theory!. Question, do you ever use Transparent Oxide yellow or Indian yellow? if not, could you explain why. Thank you Phil, you make painting so much more enjoyable and force us to think ☺
no I don't use those, I use a limited palette to create color harmony. Too many colors make a garish painting. I do use indian yellow to create a warm glaze to warm up a painting sometimes.
Amazing talk. Love your quick color studies.
Thanks Mobeen

Thanks Ron, fall colors can be tricky
We’re headed up the canyon today to the Alpine Loop, one of the prettiest drives in Utah. Looking forward to it!
Sounds great!
We get some really pretty color here in north Georgia. Will you be doing anything about reds? Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks Virgina, red can be added to the fall colors, just figure out a dark and light red in the foliage.
