My old stomping grounds at the beginning of this video. Interesting starting point you chose. It took me a minute to realize exactly where you were. Confirmed when you turned on Joy Rd. I'm not sure if it's still Detroit's mounted police horse training center, but I did see the gate on the left. I moved out of state 30 years ago, back now and living 10 miles away. I need to go drive by myself soon. Anyway, when I was growing up, we used to walk and ride bikes around the Rouge Park area. On occasion, I believe for the Thanksgiving parade, the Budwiser Clydesdales would be there. If it wasn't Budwiser, there were other Clydesdales that would visit. I learned how to drive on Spinoza. My childhood home was on Auburn Street near West Chicago. You passed my street! Watching the video was bittersweet. Detroit has a special place in my heart. I'm so glad there's efforts being made for its comeback!! Thank you for all of the videos!! I'm enjoying the forgotten history of Detroit.
Great videos. Born in 1950, I grew up in the area bordered by Southfield, Greenfield, Fenkell and Puritan - Mansfield was my street. I was a block and a half north of Fenkell, where Cook Park was located. We played baseball there in the summer, football in the fall, and the city would flood the park in the winter so we could play hockey. I find it very interesting to watch your videos now, as I left Detroit for the suburbs in 1971, and then left Michigan entirely in 1977 and moved out West where I now reside. Your videos brought back some great memories and also let me know that my memory is slipping a bit, not being able to remember Joy Rd. very well even though I had a good buddy who lived on Joy west of Telegraph. I also loved your video of driving from Detroit to Colorado without using the freeways. Thanks for what you do. It’s always a walk down memory lane when I watch your work.
Memories!!!! You drove by two of my grade schools in the early part of the video (Coolidge and Gate of Heaven Schools). I lived a short block west of Stoepel Park No. 2, left in 1961, ended up in Maryland.
