I tried my best to transcribe the lyrics to this version as best as I could, however some of the doo-wop singing during the breaks is very hard to understand or just comes across as word salad when transcribed, so some background singing has been omitted.
This is a 1980 Darts cover of the doo-wop classic, 'Sh-Boom'. I feel it is fair to upload this as Darts make money out of the video, and many other songs of theirs have been uploaded, however if anyone objects to this being here, just send me a message, and the video will be taken straight down! Very interesting to see a song like this performed at a lower tempo, actually very similar to the style of the Moonglows, with 'Over and over again'. Reached #48 in the UK single chart with an interesting B-side of a cover of 'White Christmas' by Bing Crosby, performed in a fast doo-wop style.
Composers: Keyes, Feaster, Feaster, McRae, Edwards
About the song: Originally performed by the Chords (an American black doo-wop group) in 1954, it was a moderate hit, reaching #9 on the Hot 100, while reaching #2 on the (mainly black) R&B chart, and the Chords' version featured in the Disney movie 'Cars' (2006). This version is also seen to have been the first doo-wop record to penetrate the US top 10, and it is also ranked #215 on the Rolling Stone list of the greatest songs of all time.
Later that year, the Crew-Cuts (a Canadian white vocal quartet) turned a slightly modified, more traditional version into a #1 hit on the Hot 100 (however, on the Cashbox chart, both versions were #1 as they were both combined), the increased success of their version probably due to racial tensions at the time in the US. The Crew-Cuts' version has been criticized as old-fashioned, bland, and 'taking the heart and soul out' of the original, however it significantly increased public awareness of the song in general and almost certainly increased the sales of the Chords' version.
In 1980, English 9-piece doo-wop revival outfit Darts released this song as a single (they had recorded it previously for their 1978 album 'The Amazing Darts'), however it failed to achieve Top 40 penetration, and this may have led to the band being kicked out of the Magnet label. They soon started their own label, 'Choice Cuts', however they failed to achieve any chart records on that label (possibly due to the English interest in synth-pop by that time), and the band soon split up. This song has the same lyrics as the Chords' original, but is at a much lower tempo.
