3:02 "I wanted to be an actor every since I could walk, since I was 8 years old".
Every joke flies over the interviewer's head
For real, Jim was letting some real bangers loose and this interviewer had no sense of humor.
That wasn't a joke though, just Jim going from cliche to specific in his train of thought
@@bOmBAsTiKNo. Its unbelievable that any healthy child would take 8 years to learn to walk. It is a joke. Its a form of self-deprecating humor, implying to the interviewing, jokingly, that he was a special needs child.
“It was a stretch” interviewer: huh?!
He ends the interview with, “Alright, now we gotta go to Don Rickles.” Looks like he had a lot of interviews lined up for that day, so his mind was somewhere else. He wasn’t really listening to Jim’s answers, just thinking about the camera placement and rattling off boring questions about Jim Varney’s popularity and box office performance. It’s impressive how Jim Varney managed to be so charming in a very awkward situation. Overall, kind of a wasted interview.
RIP Jim Varney (June 15, 1949 - February 10, 2000), aged 50
You will be remembered as a legend.
I was born 5 days after😢
He died during the production of "Atlantis: The Lost Empire".
Interviewer needs to show some god damn respect.
looks like the actor that plays Dr. Phil
Calm down.
Big time...
Guy does sound like a bit of a prick.
Lmfao, Seriously and at the end kinda annoyed me, but I love how Jim kinda throws sarcasm at the interviewer in the end of the interview after he says “thank you very much” and then sighs,
Jim: We’re having entirely too much fun.
Jim Varney, Robin Williams, man these two created so many amazing memories for so many people.
but Robin killed himself, sorry it's hard to watch his movies because of that. Only Aladdin i have watched in the last 3-4 years.
I think every kid who grew up in the eighties and nineties grew up loving him.
Grew up in the 90's and he was a big part of it.
This man’s legacy stretches I was born in 2002 and I grew up and loved this man’s movie he truly was the father figure to people who didn’t have one god just took him cause he did what he had to do
I adore him.
yep
Born 1990. Watched Ernest saves Christmas for Xmas and then proceeded to watch 6 other Ernest movies lol.I loved Ernest as a kid and plan on buying all Ernest movies I can find on DVD
u can see it in jims smile he was just a genuine beautiful loving person. just good vibes coming off that man. one of the most recognizable voices to this day. what a kickass dude. rip brother.
He was too pure for this world. RIP Jim
“We’re havin entirely too much fun.”😹😹 Jim was a class act. I miss him and his movies so much😭
His heart was just TOO BIG for this world.
FR he has such a nice wholesome smile
I actually feel bad watching the beverly hillbillies movie because when I first watched it, I was a kid looking at lea thompson and didn't know that would be one of the last roles he did.
It's been 23 years, but God it doesn't feel like it. I really miss this man. Wish he never would've smoked. Wish he was still with us.
This guy could have been a really good joker. I never realized it as a kid but damn.
Wow. Just imagine him playing The Joker as a psychopathic killer.
@@NinjaSushi2 Seriously. his laugh would have been everything. Look too. Facial expressions, and everything. My money would say he would top everyone.
I agree
He had some good acting skills, even his more serious roles. I think he would have nailed Joker.
@@Keranu It’s a shame they trapped him into earnest for so long. It’s even a bigger shame he was a smoker.
Loved watching this guy playing Ernest as a child. Boy I miss the guy!!
Dumb interviewer didn’t even get the Slinky the dog joke when he said its a Stretch!!! 😒 that was so funny lol
I don’t necessarily think he didn’t get it, he just sucked as a host. A bit of a head scratcher why he conducted the interview as he did.
R.I.P Jim Varney (1949 - 2000)
Rip a grate man 😇
Damn. So he passed in 2000?
@@NinjaSushi2 February 10th, 2000 from lung cancer.
@@goofusmaximus1482 smoking related?
@WilliamWatrous yes it was. The same for Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman), both were heavy smokers who went to great lengths to NOT be seen by children, or even photographed smoking. Neither of them wanted to give an impression to children that smoking was cool.
My husband and I saw him doing a comedy act way back in the 80s. Afterwards I turned to my husband and said this guy is gonna be a huge star. My husband didn't think so. But I could see he had immense talent. Not long after his star took off like a rocket through the sky.
Apparently by all commercials he was already done a star..
It's a shame no one made a movie about Vincent Price and cast Jim.
YES
Wow i didnt realize that was something i need to see until just now...
LOVE BOTH VINCENT PRICE AND JIM VARNEY WITH ALL MY HEART
GREAT INTERVIEW! This is the Jim Varney I knew, jumping into other characters,' course he was never wearing a suit when he and Joe Liles and I were clowning around; note at 1:47 in answering the question of "could have played Jethro"., and he says "In My Prime, maybe"...He's jumped into his character of his video of the really "straight guy with an attitude', " Your World as I See it!" I wish someone could take that character and re-film as a dedication TO Jim? Great character.Still, I am looking for the old cassette tape we made of " Muhlenberg County". Jim had a great singing voice too. The video produced by Michael Lynn has a few chronological incorrect splices, such as those of Jackie saying the word " Divorce" ---in two different time-frames wearing the same blouse with the same props etc., but I'm sure nobody would actually "care" about that, except Jacki, perhaps, herself ? Jim asked me to pick Jackie up from the airport when she came to California, ( probably because Joe's car was that big gas hog Pontiac, and my Dodge Dart got much better gas mileage !) Peculiarly, too, there's no mention of Jackie's twin boys ? I'm sure Jim guided them somehow into the entertainment industry too? And they also failed to mention Jim's part in "Operation Petticoat?" I'll keep Jim's personal opinions of working with Jamie Lee Curtis silent , here, because she redeemed herself so well later. Joe and I accompanied Jim to the "Gong Show" audition, too; The one that kept us waiting a bit bored and hungry for over four house...Of course we accompanied him to the Comedy Store..and there was the "Laff Stop" back then, in San Diego; My Dodge Dart came in handy for allot of those long trips. Jim tried to get ME to do some stand-up at the Comedy Store , as a character named "Cleatta Faye" when he heard the song "You're the Reason I'm not Married", but I hate "performing!" But Jim was one of the very few performers I could handle being around---Jim being so driven toward success never affected his basic, loving personality! Since allot of viewers won't believe my personal association with Joseph Perry Liles, who was just helping Jim sign with William Morris when I knew him- I shall state here, I would LOVE to meet up with Jim's sister, Sandy McKenny, sometime, to share some stories/ true ones-because there's allot that can't be stated here; However, she must have known and visited with Jim, DURING the week that Joe and Jim went back to Depoy, Kentucky, to visit with Joe's family, as his mother, Avriel, had lost her dearest closest friend. I SAVED THE PHONE BILL WITH ALL OF THE PHONE NUMBERS Joe and Jim called that month from my phone; and I'd gladly share those with Jim's sister, and Joe's brother and sister-in-law sometime. I was invited to come along, but I couldn't get off work to spend a week in Kentucky! By the way, I always thought Joe's favorite song was " Hear That Lonely Whippoorwill, " and when I played "Fine Feathered Friends" written about Joe, Jim said "Better not let him hear that one!" Jim was always so gracious and kind, and "always" jumping out of character---as his 2nd wife said-except when quoting Shakespeare ! WOW! He could have REWRITTEN all of the Shakespearian plays AS COMEDIES if he had wanted to!Replies Welcome: LyndaFayeSmusic@gmail.com
Hmmm...
If you had both Vincent Price and Jim Varney doing a movie, that sounds like a recipe for a GOOD Scooby Doo movie... 😁😁😁😁😁
Christopher Lee and/or Peter Cushing would be a nice touch... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I absolutely adore this man. Rest in peace Jim Varney.
Mr. Varney exhibits a grace with the interviewer that I do not possess.
Exactly. That’s was really awkward. However, Jim made the best of it.
This interviewer really bothered me. So cut and dry. No true interest and no true intent on really getting to know his career and motive. I grew up on Ernest and Jim Varney in general and god rest his soul and this interview deserves way more respect and way more views.

The interviewer I felt was so disrespectful. Jim was Jim and that's what made this enjoyable. I couldn't agree with your statement more. It's like do you not realize who is in front of you.
I could like hear Him Breathing Lol so uncomfortable.
The interviewer seemed very disrespectful. Especially when he said "and it's come to this playing slinky the dog". Like damn dude.
The interviewer was very much an ass.
He was a very handsome man!! I miss him. Ernest shaped my childhood! He came to sign autographs at a furniture store in my hometown of Farmington, NM when I was about 5 or 6. I had strep throat and couldn’t go 😭
Jim Varney, was one of the most wholesome souls on this planet. He had such a gentle aura about him, his comedy was hilarious, his acting sublime, and put his heart into his craft.
We lost him so damn early, but are incredibly fortunate to have so many memories in his commercials, movies and persona on tv.
Rest easy Jim, so many of us miss you!
The type of adult that kids could call a buddy, is how I felt about him when I was young ;)
His kindness and caring is still with me. He changed me when I felt no one cared.
Jesus cares.
Great look at Jim Varney. Interesting to hear that he was aware of how scary ERNEST SCARED STUPID was after seeing it on the big screen.
I really wanted to hear his commentary on making that one that’s my favorite Earnest film and I love to know the history behind it or his thoughts, But he’s right it’s pretty frightening for a kids movie and still holds up quite well for what it is.
It scared me as a kid…
Funny, Jim never took an interview seriously because nobody was ever serious about interviewing him.
I’m 36 years old and i never knew Jim Varney was the voice of Slink. He was the greatest for me as a kid
Kids who were born during the early 2000's never even got to watch Toy Story 2 before Jim Varney died! How sad is that...
scratch that, they didn't even know about having an ernest movie rented for kids to watch and it was so good even the parents came in to watch it and laugh.
@@professorpenne9962 indeed, tru dat.
These jokes were funny but I swear he could take any of the lamest jokes I've ever heard and turn them into gold with his delivery. Loved Jim varney, a real comedic genius
This man dressed up like Earnest and visited sick children in hospitals while undergoing cancer treatments and right up until the day he died. Jim, we miss you! You were a huge part of my Generations childhood and we all still love you. God bless you and God speed.
Such an interesting and likeable man. Love his voice and character.
Jim Varney had something genuine he showed in his skits. He related to people and was just a genuine soul he was able to show others. Ernest saves Christmas and in Ernest goes to jail, his speech in the end of egtj, step up and take what you have and do the best is so moving. Plus, in saving Christmas, so many side stories. The girl who was on the run, bad childhood Ernest still cared about her without taking advantage of her. She needed to know she was loved no matter what.
Loved Ernest as kid and still watch his movies today and Ernest saves Christmas every year

I've always loved Jim. Such an amazing talent. I grew up watching Ernest movies in the 80s and early 90s. He looked pretty rough here. He was only 46 at the time of this interview, but looked a good 10-15 years older. That just goes to show the horrible effects that smoking has on the body. RIP, Jim. You were a legend.
PS ~ whoever this interviewer was, he was AWFUL.
Thank you Jim. RIP gone too soon. What a talented man. We lost a lot of laughter and joy the day you left. ❤️❤️❤️
Miss him so much! One of the greats. Will always have a place in my childhood heart! Always!!!!
I miss him so much. Just an amazing talent who loved everyone and truly gave his entire life to bring happiness to this world. Even when he was dying with cancer, he still dressed as Earnest and visited children’s’ hospitals. Just miss him terribly❤️
Varney would've played Joe Exotic in the Tiger King movie
Never thought of that. Great casting choice!
Woulda been too old but also yeah
Oh he could if totally played Joe Exotic.
He feels like someone that Tarantino would hire.
Jim varney is one of my heroes. The talent came easy but he worked hard and for a long time to get where he got. The physical humor is obvious but I still am surprised by some of the things he says in Ernest movies. I consider myself a bon vivant for being an Ernest fan.
I totally love this guy❤️
Jim and I were set to do a shoot but sadly, it wasn't meant to be. I admired him greatly
Love this man!

such a great incredible actor and comedian
sigh, Toy Story was such a seminal computer animation movie... if Jim Varney had lived, we would have had movie after movie with his voice talents in it. he would today be regarded as one of America's finest actors. it's such a bummer he died so young!!!
People are not gonna like this but I loved Jim Barney more then Tom Hanks. Ernest/slinky dog rest in peace you will forever be young
Jim is a legend because he took a Character for commercials and moved him into movies. And he was massive in America at the time. As far as i know no actor or very few brought a character from silver screen to the big screen. Rip Jim You Know Wut I Mean :D
I miss Jim Varney movies God rest his soul.❤
I remember watching hey vern it's ernest from the first episode to the last. And every single one of his movies. Man I miss the 80s and 90s.
God I love Jim Varney, lovely, lovely Man.

Best actor of my heart
50 is too damn young. Rest easy Jim
Man, I miss Jim... Ernest Goes to Camp was my favorite
Picture him as the Joker
Grew up watching Ernest goes to camp. Never saw any other ones. Had no idea he was Slinky! R.I.P
Most people had mr rodgers or spongebob depending when they were growing up ernest was my mr rodgers growing up
I was so lucky that Hey Vern, It’s Ernest happened to be on television when I was a child, which was how I was first introduced to the character. I was from New York City, so I wasn’t really exposed to Ernest through the television commercials like most Americans were then. The TV series was short-lived, but Varney’s acting and comedic timing and the whole technical verve of that show really made a lifelong impact on me. There was something so oddly comforting about him and the Ernest character to my then-child eyes.
Loved Ernest so funny 😂
Love Jim Varney. He was a rare breed of Celebrity and he reminds me of Bob Nelson. Funny as all get out and they didn't need to cuss all of the time. Jim left us way too soon. We're running out of Jim Varney's and Bob Nelson's.
Wow thank you!❤❤😱
GREAT INTERVIEW!
Miss him so much
Love his acting.
Such style!!!
He interrupts him to jump to the next question without letting him finish.
A good interviewer understands that is about being engaging while also being succinct and a good listener. Ultimately the goal is to get the interviewee talking.
If you have some questions left over when the time is up, that is fine,
better to be over prepared than under.
@@bestmoviesever1 So many interviewers are like that man, though. No respect.
What an awesome guy
I love Jim Varney
God I love him
I feel dumb as ever not knowing that he played the dog in Toy Story. Now it all makes sense with that voice. S M H Anywho, what a talentd guy and genuine soul.
Africa, Camp & then Jail are my favs!!!!
I always thought that Jim Varney and Frank Silva (Killer Bob from Twin Peaks) kinda shared similar facial features.
Goddamn that interviewer was hot garbage on fire.
I love his Ernest laugh at 2:51
Jim was a dude with a charisma level of 5000
There should be a movie made about James Albert Varney Jr and I think Mike Rowe should play the part. My dear aunt is buried in the same cemetery in Lexington KY where James is.
Ya.. Jim Carry could pull it off
@@ifarted6422 I say mike rowe from dirty jobs because he close to james Albert varney jr in looks and build
Goes to Camp Started it! SAVES CHRISTMAS WAS EPIC!
I miss him so much. Ernest movies were my childhood. If i could go back in time and tell him to not smoke or even bring him to the future. Even though he looks like my abusive step dad but with hair i always put ernest above him cause i didnt want him to ruin ernest for me.
1:48 joke went totally over the interviewers head.
