GREAT INTERVIEW! This is the Jim Varney I knew, jumping into other characters,' course he was never wearing a suit when he and Joe Liles and I were clowning around; note at 1:47 in answering the question of "could have played Jethro"., and he says "In My Prime, maybe"...He's jumped into his character of his video of the really "straight guy with an attitude', " Your World as I See it!" I wish someone could take that character and re-film as a dedication TO Jim? Great character.Still, I am looking for the old cassette tape we made of " Muhlenberg County". Jim had a great singing voice too. The video produced by Michael Lynn has a few chronological incorrect splices, such as those of Jackie saying the word " Divorce" ---in two different time-frames wearing the same blouse with the same props etc., but I'm sure nobody would actually "care" about that, except Jacki, perhaps, herself ? Jim asked me to pick Jackie up from the airport when she came to California, ( probably because Joe's car was that big gas hog Pontiac, and my Dodge Dart got much better gas mileage !) Peculiarly, too, there's no mention of Jackie's twin boys ? I'm sure Jim guided them somehow into the entertainment industry too? And they also failed to mention Jim's part in "Operation Petticoat?" I'll keep Jim's personal opinions of working with Jamie Lee Curtis silent , here, because she redeemed herself so well later. Joe and I accompanied Jim to the "Gong Show" audition, too; The one that kept us waiting a bit bored and hungry for over four house...Of course we accompanied him to the Comedy Store..and there was the "Laff Stop" back then, in San Diego; My Dodge Dart came in handy for allot of those long trips. Jim tried to get ME to do some stand-up at the Comedy Store , as a character named "Cleatta Faye" when he heard the song "You're the Reason I'm not Married", but I hate "performing!" But Jim was one of the very few performers I could handle being around---Jim being so driven toward success never affected his basic, loving personality! Since allot of viewers won't believe my personal association with Joseph Perry Liles, who was just helping Jim sign with William Morris when I knew him- I shall state here, I would LOVE to meet up with Jim's sister, Sandy McKenny, sometime, to share some stories/ true ones-because there's allot that can't be stated here; However, she must have known and visited with Jim, DURING the week that Joe and Jim went back to Depoy, Kentucky, to visit with Joe's family, as his mother, Avriel, had lost her dearest closest friend. I SAVED THE PHONE BILL WITH ALL OF THE PHONE NUMBERS Joe and Jim called that month from my phone; and I'd gladly share those with Jim's sister, and Joe's brother and sister-in-law sometime. I was invited to come along, but I couldn't get off work to spend a week in Kentucky! By the way, I always thought Joe's favorite song was " Hear That Lonely Whippoorwill, " and when I played "Fine Feathered Friends" written about Joe, Jim said "Better not let him hear that one!" Jim was always so gracious and kind, and "always" jumping out of character---as his 2nd wife said-except when quoting Shakespeare ! WOW! He could have REWRITTEN all of the Shakespearian plays AS COMEDIES if he had wanted to!Replies Welcome: LyndaFayeSmusic@gmail.com
The interviewer I felt was so disrespectful. Jim was Jim and that's what made this enjoyable. I couldn't agree with your statement more. It's like do you not realize who is in front of you.
I actually feel bad watching the beverly hillbillies movie because when I first watched it, I was a kid looking at lea thompson and didn't know that would be one of the last roles he did.
My husband and I saw him doing a comedy act way back in the 80s. Afterwards I turned to my husband and said this guy is gonna be a huge star. My husband didn't think so. But I could see he had immense talent. Not long after his star took off like a rocket through the sky.
Do you know what I just missed him lot more I think about him being before I was in my brother's house over at Oro valley place in Tucson Arizona AZ feel like I am really pulling me back out feeling like I was in Oro valley September it's looks like come back Disneyland before
Jim Varney, was one of the most wholesome souls on this planet. He had such a gentle aura about him, his comedy was hilarious, his acting sublime, and put his heart into his craft. We lost him so damn early, but are incredibly fortunate to have so many memories in his commercials, movies and persona on tv. Rest easy Jim, so many of us miss you!
I grew up watching the Ernest movies with my Grandpa. He was a WW2 Veteran and generally a very serious guy. But for some reason, when Ernest came on or we would rent it on VHS - all that went away. RIP Jim

@WilliamWatrous yes it was. The same for Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman), both were heavy smokers who went to great lengths to NOT be seen by children, or even photographed smoking. Neither of them wanted to give an impression to children that smoking was cool.

Hmmm... If you had both Vincent Price and Jim Varney doing a movie, that sounds like a recipe for a GOOD Scooby Doo movie... 😁😁😁😁😁 Christopher Lee and/or Peter Cushing would be a nice touch... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Man, I cried a little bit when I thought that Jim was really putting it on for the guy and the camera, like he didn't have to be so fun but he went out of his way to joke around from start to finish, yet the interviewer seemed to not care despite having a few decent questions. I thought it was kind of rude the way he said "thank you very much" time to interview someone who is way more famous than you, Don Rickles. I like how Jim said a somewhat sarcastic line at the end pointing fun at how serious the interviewer is, since it was Jim who was making the dull questions seem irrelevant bc he was acting so funny. It's a kids movie that became a huge success for an animation. It's great that they considered Jim for the role since he really didn't have the star power like the other guys (Tom Hanks), luckily the director knew what he was doing.
These jokes were funny but I swear he could take any of the lamest jokes I've ever heard and turn them into gold with his delivery. Loved Jim varney, a real comedic genius
He was a very handsome man!! I miss him. Ernest shaped my childhood! He came to sign autographs at a furniture store in my hometown of Farmington, NM when I was about 5 or 6. I had strep throat and couldn’t go 😭
I really wanted to hear his commentary on making that one that’s my favorite Earnest film and I love to know the history behind it or his thoughts, But he’s right it’s pretty frightening for a kids movie and still holds up quite well for what it is.
Jim Varney had something genuine he showed in his skits. He related to people and was just a genuine soul he was able to show others. Ernest saves Christmas and in Ernest goes to jail, his speech in the end of egtj, step up and take what you have and do the best is so moving. Plus, in saving Christmas, so many side stories. The girl who was on the run, bad childhood Ernest still cared about her without taking advantage of her. She needed to know she was loved no matter what.
scratch that, they didn't even know about having an ernest movie rented for kids to watch and it was so good even the parents came in to watch it and laugh.
I was born in 2000, Jim was my dad’s absolute favorite person, I grew up watching Ernest goes to jail with him and I watch it with my now 5 year old. Love Jim Varney
I've always loved Jim. Such an amazing talent. I grew up watching Ernest movies in the 80s and early 90s. He looked pretty rough here. He was only 46 at the time of this interview, but looked a good 10-15 years older. That just goes to show the horrible effects that smoking has on the body. RIP, Jim. You were a legend. PS ~ whoever this interviewer was, he was AWFUL.
I'm glad people in europe also enjoy him, he was a very big part of people's childhoods and lives in north america. ernest movies are still shown on tv and talked about fondly.
Jim varney is one of my heroes. The talent came easy but he worked hard and for a long time to get where he got. The physical humor is obvious but I still am surprised by some of the things he says in Ernest movies. I consider myself a bon vivant for being an Ernest fan.
I was born in early ‘89 and every year since I was a kid I always watch Ernest Scared Stupid. I love Jim Varney, he was a huge part of my childhood. “How’s bout a bumper sandwich, booger lips”😂
Jim is a legend. Enough said. Miss him every day. Speaking of which, the Beverly Hillbillies movie is extremely underrated, the entire cast was perfect. Mr Varney was especially incredible as Jed.
I miss him so much. Just an amazing talent who loved everyone and truly gave his entire life to bring happiness to this world. Even when he was dying with cancer, he still dressed as Earnest and visited children’s’ hospitals. Just miss him terribly❤️
Every interview I've seen with Jim Varney is the same: Varney is golden, and the interviewer serves up bricks. Like fucking A, if you elitists knew the talent sitting in front of you, you'd wouldn't have squandered your time.
My first Ernest movie was Goes To Camp I watched at my grandparents about a year after it came out. Fond memories and Ernest was a part of it all. Saves Christmas is a family holiday tradition to this day. There will never be another, knowwutimean Verney?
Jim is a legend because he took a Character for commercials and moved him into movies. And he was massive in America at the time. As far as i know no actor or very few brought a character from silver screen to the big screen. Rip Jim You Know Wut I Mean :D

When i saw the first Toy Story commercial on TV, it blew my little kid mind. This was before i could read, and i remember me and my friend talking about how we couldn't wait for the TOYS ALIVE movie to come out. Thats what we called it, Toys Alive, haha. But i remember just thinking, they probably just made some really good lifelike toys just for the movie, like they was tiny robots inside the toys like the big animatronic band at chuck e cheese. I didnt understand until i got the VHS and watched the making of it that it was all on a computer, it was nothing like claymation and robots. It fascinated me, fast forward to now, just yesterday i have my first 3d render being played on a big digital casino sign off of a major highway in OKLAHOMA I40 . Millions of people will see my first render as itll be up there on a loop through winter. Im super happy and ready to try more 3d ideas!
Jim was HILARIOUS, super funny and so loveable. Really miss him❤❤❤. LOVED him in Ernest goes to jail. Soooo freakin funny!!!!😂 Ohhh that LAUGH...knowhatimean???❤❤❤
Why bump the guy at the end of the interview for someone prettier. How thank you for the interview and look forward to seeing you again it was these Ernest idea for the finish
Love Jim Varney. He was a rare breed of Celebrity and he reminds me of Bob Nelson. Funny as all get out and they didn't need to cuss all of the time. Jim left us way too soon. We're running out of Jim Varney's and Bob Nelson's.
im surprised that no one mentioned that he was a chain smoker, but never allowed himself to be photographed with a cigarette as he didnt want a bad impression to be put on the kids that looked up to him. Good dude!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel dumb as ever not knowing that he played the dog in Toy Story. Now it all makes sense with that voice. S M H Anywho, what a talentd guy and genuine soul.

Jim Varney, Robin Williams, man these two created so many amazing memories for so many people.
but Robin killed himself, sorry it's hard to watch his movies because of that. Only Aladdin i have watched in the last 3-4 years.
Do you know I just realized remember it being called back
watch the little banter back stage with Robin and him makes me wish they would have been able to make a movie together

Varney didn't have the same demons as Williams. He was more wholesome imo.
But he did have an addiction

You will be remembered as a legend.

Dumb interviewer didn’t even get the Slinky the dog joke when he said its a Stretch!!! 😒 that was so funny lol
I don’t necessarily think he didn’t get it, he just sucked as a host. A bit of a head scratcher why he conducted the interview as he did.
It's been 23 years, but God it doesn't feel like it. I really miss this man. Wish he never would've smoked. Wish he was still with us.
This guy could have been a really good joker. I never realized it as a kid but damn.

I'll keep Jim's personal opinions of working with Jamie Lee Curtis silent , here, because she redeemed herself so well later.
I could like hear Him Breathing Lol so uncomfortable.
The interviewer seemed very disrespectful. Especially when he said "and it's come to this playing slinky the dog". Like damn dude.
The interviewer was very much an ass.
His heart was just TOO BIG for this world.
FR he has such a nice wholesome smile
I actually feel bad watching the beverly hillbillies movie because when I first watched it, I was a kid looking at lea thompson and didn't know that would be one of the last roles he did.
My husband and I saw him doing a comedy act way back in the 80s. Afterwards I turned to my husband and said this guy is gonna be a huge star. My husband didn't think so. But I could see he had immense talent. Not long after his star took off like a rocket through the sky.
Apparently by all commercials he was already done a star..
He was too pure for this world. RIP Jim
Do you know what I just missed him lot more I think about him being before I was in my brother's house over at Oro valley place in Tucson Arizona AZ feel like I am really pulling me back out feeling like I was in Oro valley September it's looks like come back Disneyland before
I absolutely adore this man. Rest in peace Jim Varney.
Mr. Varney exhibits a grace with the interviewer that I do not possess.
Exactly. That’s was really awkward. However, Jim made the best of it.
The type of adult that kids could call a buddy, is how I felt about him when I was young ;)
I grew up watching the Ernest movies with my Grandpa. He was a WW2 Veteran and generally a very serious guy. But for some reason, when Ernest came on or we would rent it on VHS - all that went away. RIP Jim
Thank you for sharing this gem!! He was a real treasure.
GREAT INTERVIEW! This is the Jim Varney I knew, jumping into other characters,' course he was never wearing a suit when he and Joe Liles and I were clowning around; note at 1:47 in answering the question of "could have played Jethro"., and he says "In My Prime, maybe"...He's jumped into his character of his video of the really "straight guy with an attitude', " Your World as I See it!" @WilliamWatrous yes it was. The same for Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman), both were heavy smokers who went to great lengths to NOT be seen by children, or even photographed smoking. Neither of them wanted to give an impression to children that smoking was cool.
It's a shame no one made a movie about Vincent Price and cast Jim.

Hmmm...
If you had both Vincent Price and Jim Varney doing a movie, that sounds like a recipe for a GOOD Scooby Doo movie... 😁😁😁😁😁
Christopher Lee and/or Peter Cushing would be a nice touch... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I’m 36 years old and i never knew Jim Varney was the voice of Slink. He was the greatest for me as a kid
His kindness and caring is still with me. He changed me when I felt no one cared.
Jesus cares.
I had strep throat and couldn’t go 😭
Funny, Jim never took an interview seriously because nobody was ever serious about interviewing him.
Great look at Jim Varney. Interesting to hear that he was aware of how scary ERNEST SCARED STUPID was after seeing it on the big screen.
I really wanted to hear his commentary on making that one that’s my favorite Earnest film and I love to know the history behind it or his thoughts, But he’s right it’s pretty frightening for a kids movie and still holds up quite well for what it is.
It scared me as a kid…
Such an interesting and likeable man. Love his voice and character.
Loved Ernest as kid and still watch his movies today and Ernest saves Christmas every year

He's right up there with Jim Carrey for facial expressions, they're both the facial expression goats.
Kids who were born during the early 2000's never even got to watch Toy Story 2 before Jim Varney died! How sad is that...
scratch that, they didn't even know about having an ernest movie rented for kids to watch and it was so good even the parents came in to watch it and laugh.

Jim varney, trust me where ever you are, you are big in europe, always watch your movies dude, thank you for the laughter
I'm glad people in europe also enjoy him, he was a very big part of people's childhoods and lives in north america. ernest movies are still shown on tv and talked about fondly.
I use to watch Jim Varney on Saturday mornings when I was a kid , I am so sad he is no longer with us.
Toy Story was my childhood and Jim seemed like such a very good hearted soul. He is such a legend and was a good funny actor.
Thank you Jim. RIP gone too soon. What a talented man. We lost a lot of laughter and joy the day you left. ❤️❤️❤️

Miss him so much! One of the greats. Will always have a place in my childhood heart! Always!!!!
Jim was taken too soon. Love this man!
I can't believe Jim suffered with cancer and made movies and visited children's hospitals what a gentleman
Jim varney is one of my heroes. The talent came easy but he worked hard and for a long time to get where he got. The physical humor is obvious but I still am surprised by some of the things he says in Ernest movies. I consider myself a bon vivant for being an Ernest fan.
What a great actor you will never be forgotten Jim varney
Varney would've played Joe Exotic in the Tiger King movie
Never thought of that. Great casting choice!
Woulda been too old but also yeah
Oh he could if totally played Joe Exotic.
He feels like someone that Tarantino would hire.
I love that you have more footage of Jim. I'm not working in a documentary but you can still post it for us to see.
I was born in early ‘89 and every year since I was a kid I always watch Ernest Scared Stupid. I love Jim Varney, he was a huge part of my childhood. “How’s bout a bumper sandwich, booger lips”😂
My favorite Ernest movie growing up was Ernest Goes to Jail.
YES!! Goes to Jail and Scared Stupid are my top favorite Ernest movies lol
Goes to Jail is still so funny! Saves Christmas is also my annual Christmas movie.
Jim and I were set to do a shoot but sadly, it wasn't meant to be. I admired him greatly
I totally love this guy❤️

Going from playing Ernest to bring himself-Jim Varney…. You can see the HUGE difference…. 😁😁😁😁😁
Camp, Jail, are my favorite...scared stupid and Xmas are good and probably underrated
Jim is a legend. Enough said. Miss him every day. Speaking of which, the Beverly Hillbillies movie is extremely underrated, the entire cast was perfect. Mr Varney was especially incredible as Jed.
God, I miss him! Everything about him.
Couldn't finish this interview because the jaskass interviewer.

I love Ernest corny Laugh n smile so much hahaha man is a true legend ❤️❤️❤️ such a beautiful n gifted person
I miss this guy. He was hilarious.
He was a legend. I miss him

Legend & One of the best influences I was afforded to watch growing up -- Scared Stupid & Ernest Goes To Jail - Slam Dunk Ernest - He never missed
50 is too damn young. Rest easy Jim
