When you're sitting in the orchestra, you don't need to look at either the conductor or the music all the time. Peripheral vision means that even when looking down to the part, you can still see the conductor's beat. Quite often the music in the tricky passages when it's essential everyone follows the conductor closely have been memorised by the players so they can all look up with confidence!
Tybalt's death if im not wrong. Wonderful performance. My soul is always tortured by this funeral march and it is such a great pleasure to see Valery was able to express that on his face and hand movements.
What a treasure trove of musical invention Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet is, I just cannot get over it. Tshaikovski's overture (on the same subject) is impressive as well.
magnificent! i truly wish i can see you guys perform i wish to be in a band like this but sadly i am barely learning to play the bass, but i wan't to be a composer like you, vigerous, passionate, great, and so stunning i am trying to write a peice combining "dance of knights" and "obsession diobolique' i wish to follow prokofeiv's footsteps in becoming a great composer, pianist, and conductor. i still have a long way to go seeing that i am only 13
amazing. i saw this guy direct the st. petersburg phil./orchestra(?) at orchestra hall in chicago when i was a kid. they played this as an encore. amazing.
No! The LSO formed in 1904, so there's been many many conductors in those 109 years. Gergiev is our current Principal Conductor - with that same title there's been 12 other conductors since 1904. We also have lots of guest conductors every season - perhaps 10-15 different conductors during the year.
A very intensive and nice performance. Played very well to describe the fight of Mercutio and Tybalt then the confrontation of Romeo and Tybalt. Excellent!
No, no. I just don't think we could play this because it looks kind of hard. We would need to work even harder that usual to get the job done. Though it would be worth it because this is amazing!
Yet it is tonal music. In fact, I don't think this fast tempo is an issue for violinists. BTW, the bigger orchestra - the easier it is to play such pieces; this is why all orchestras recording motion picture music are that big. What are You? (Are You an orchestra player or a conductor?)
+Nick T. Woah now. I'm just 14 and actually I'm a newbie in the orchestra so I still am unaccustomed to play music similar to this. You know lots about playing in an orchestra! Do you play any instruments? If yes what? And can you give me some tips about getting better at reading the notes? I mean I play the violin like rubbish and I'm a slow learner, but I really want to be actually good at at least one thing.
Hi Isia, there is a recording of the ballet by the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, on our sister label Mariinsky Label: mariinskylabel.com/products/prokofiev-romeo-juliet-blu-ray-dvd?variant=873581921
@mtrang1277 With the decline of today's music, a classical composer is needed to restore the art that used to be music. Good luck, keep on practicing and composing!
There is something so expressive about a conductor who leads with his hands instead of a baton. Maestro Gergiev is a delight to watch!
Never watch the music. Listen to it instead.

That's why young simphony orchestras exist!.

One of the best.
I think.

A very intensive and nice performance. Played very well to describe the fight of Mercutio and Tybalt then the confrontation of Romeo and Tybalt. Excellent!
Very nice playing :) The bass clarinet player near the beginning looks she's dancing hehe :)
I had never heard this. Very nice!
how does that ONE snare drum manage to sound so loud??!!
I wish so much, so very much, to be at the very back row or at least my ear on the door!
To hear this live would be amazing.

Fantastic orchestra.

Just a minor suggestion, BUT it would be nice to hear the audience's reaction to such an impressive presentation.. FWIW - F.

Violinist next to Concertmaster is SANDY KOUFAX!! Seriously, this a great performance by Georgiev and the LSO
I wonder if our orchestra could take this... Wish we could. Hope to (at least) try it some day haha...
+Laura Balžekaitė Too less participants?
No, no. I just don't think we could play this because it looks kind of hard. We would need to work even harder that usual to get the job done. Though it would be worth it because this is amazing!

How many conductors has the LSO been through? has it always been Valery Gergiev?
Very true, but theoretically the pieces would be expected to be memorized anyway..
Lovely performance by the way!
Exactamente.
esta mui bien esta simforrola
Is there a complete video with all the Acts? :)
Well they just do both=)
As you might type while you look at the screen.
Prokofiev as conducted by Gergiev...not a bad combination.
@mtrang1277 With the decline of today's music, a classical composer is needed to restore the art that used to be music. Good luck, keep on practicing and composing!
If this is any help? Google 'Category:Prokofiev, Sergey - IMSLP'
hmm,i like this
How are they supposed to look at the conductor when they have to look at the music?
It might be just me, but I just cant find the dancers!
Some kind of focal seasure activity but unusual
Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man...
none note, hear end. comfortable.
LSO.....some band.
