In the late 13th century, the Schaler family of knights from Basel built the castle as a residence on their own property. It is located, today somewhat hidden in the forest, on the access road to the Plattenpass. In the Middle Ages, this was an important traffic connection between Birseck and Laufental. The reason for the construction was probably not the collection of tolls, but the rivalry with the noble Münch family. Their castle Münchsberg was only 390 meters away as the crow flies. With the occupation of the new domicile, the branch of the family residing there henceforth called itself "von Schalberg".
Schalberg Castle was probably built as a successor to Engenstein Castle, which was not far away. The 100 meter long complex consists of an upper castle and a lower castle. The ruins that still exist today indicate a stately building. Among other things, the round tower with its almost 3 meter thick walls, remains of various economic buildings and parts of the ring wall are still visible.
The complex was well protected. On the two long sides there are steep rocky slopes. In the southeast, a natural terrain depression made access difficult for potential attackers. To protect the north-western side, two neck ditches were built, which had to be overcome.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the Schalers handed over the castle to the Bishop of Basel and immediately received it back as a fief. This was a common practice in the Middle Ages, but often not entirely voluntary, in order to secure the protection of a powerful ally.
In 1358, an earthquake caused damage to the castle. However, these were repaired promptly.
As early as 1400, the inhabitants left the place to settle in the town. At that time, the power-political events shifted more and more to these urban centers. 37 years later the family died out and the Counts of Tierstein came into possession of the castle complex. However, the new owners had no interest in it and let it decay further. Their attention was focused on the rights connected with it, such as tax collection and jurisdiction. The last written mention of Schalberg Castle dates back to 1452, after which it fell into oblivion.
In 1975 the ruins were partially conserved. However, comprehensive archaeological excavations have not yet taken place.
The castle is located on the Aesch Castle Ridge Trail, which is highly recommended for explorers. In addition to Schalberg Castle, the remains of three other castles, a cave and a dolmen tomb can be visited on the hike.
