Holst's compositions are truly magnificent in how they all express such depth of feeling and it really gives the listener a chance to feel as he did when he wrote them. This is probably his finest piece for military band, while the planets a hands down best for his orchestral compositions.
Played both Suites when I was in the Army Band, (also at the the H.S. of Music & Arts in NYC). Played both clarinet and the Bb bass clarinet, loved, and still do, the woodwinds lines
This is my absolute favorite piece of composed symphonic music of all time! Played this in my High School Symphonic District Band and literally cried while playing the tuba part near the end of Chaconne. Such a powerful piece of music through all three movements and I encourage every musician to experience playing this. Absolutely soul-piercing to hear live.
+Michael Mitchell haha yeah I'm playing 1st and 3rd movement in my senior band at school and i guess we tried 😂 ... most of the chromatics in here were cut out for us..
Ever since we played this my sophomore year of high school, it has been one of my favorite pieces! It always comes to my mind at least once a year. It makes me want to pick up my clarinet again!
I love these songs. I played the whole suite 3 times and all on bass clarinet(recently played this year for band camp for this year). The first movement gives me goosebumps every time when I hear it. This whole suite is one of my most favorites of Holst. He writes such beautiful literature.
played this suite for contest in high school... switched between tuba and euphonium for the whole thing... very fun although at 1:50 that part got tricky on tuba.. got pretty high
Yup, I sit right nexty to the solo Bb clarinetist, good lord he is cute and he can sight read the music. Once he got it he played like half of the runs the first time. O.O
Could you tell me who performed this? Which recording it is? I'm having a difficult time finding a preferred performance for purchase... I like this one a lot!
The interpretation sounds like either New York Phil or President's Own. If not either of those I have no clue... So could somebody please find out the answer to my question? haha
mee too! but im in the middle school btu i still play with the highschool its an amazing song
Great song.
Seriously cannot hear this without crying. So many memories. :)
Wow! What glorious sounds.
1st trumpet this my all time favorite piece to play
10:03 my favorite part
The Southeast Texas high school region band played this piece in 2006. Never been apart of a more talented brass section.

The bones rule. I always loved playing this suite.
Maestro Bramwell Tovey came to my school last week to rehearse this with us. Boy is he one funny cat, and he really helped me out!
We are playing this right now in band class. I love it! I give it two thumbs up becuase I have only two.
I played brass while doing this song and it was fortissimo and the most fun section
Couldn't agree more
That Timpani in Chaconne though!!!! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I love it so much!!!!
I have the Bb solo clarinet part. I can't wait to play this for spring.

+Jorge Quesada The counterpoint during the trumpet solo in the 2nd mvmt...
The end of march gets me every time :)
We're playing this for our spring concert, can't wait to here the woodwinds try and play the 16th note run.
my band is playing the March for our concert, and I think that the trombones have the most important part. and it is a ton of fun to play.
The end of Chaconne really gives me chills. ;)
played this last year as 1st oboe, was beautiful and so much fun to play.
4llemand do you have any comments on the oboe solo? The transitions kill me. I'm a clarinet but since we have no oboes I have to play it.
omg me too!!!!! i love all the clarinet feat. because i play clarinet:D lol this piece is by far my favorite!!!!!!!:)
Also playing this in Band right now! Tuba baby! :D

Aha! Middle section Horns! Sounds as amazing as the orchestra I'm in! Wind Band.
So happy, we're playing this for regionals x3
Clarinet here, in the McHenry County Honors Band 1986. Awesome piece to play. Wish I still could.
played this in 1969 under the direction of the great John B Robbins. What an honor.Good times indeed.
I love the beautiful, flowing trumpet solo in the intermezzo, accompanied by the flourishing woodwinds..I always get chills.
Chaconne is the most beautiful piece I have ever heard ♡♡♡♡♡ love it so damn much
Honestly I could listen to it for days

Ha! Never ceases to amaze me what's on YT. I played this in high school, one of the floundering tuba players at the back. We tried...

Playing this in my band right now..it never fails at giving me chills.
We just played this at UIL in texas (region 26) and got all 1's (best rating)
Brass is class
Gustav Holtz was the euphonium player's best friend (or enemy, depending on how you looked at it).

THIS SUITE IS AMAZING!!
The broadening near the end of the march is simply amazing :D
SherlockTardis: The opening chord is a simple minor triad. That's what I hear, anyway. I could be wrong. Never seen the score of this fabulous piece.
I commend the clarinets on those high runs ^^
GO CLARINETS!!
I'm playing this in band right now(clarinet)
FLUTE REPRESENT HELLA
same
Blue Knights 2011!

That's a funny way to spell trombone.
I love the oboe solo, as a Clarinet, since my high school has no Oboe I have to play it. The transitions always gets me. Any tips?
Of whom is this recording?
Intermezzo is my favorite. The bells part for this is ridiculous. All of Chaconne is 16th notes.
This recording is superior. What ensemble is this?
played this suite for contest in high school... switched between tuba and euphonium for the whole thing... very fun although at 1:50 that part got tricky on tuba.. got pretty high
TUBA ALL DAY!!!!!! Lets be honest this piece wouldnt be the same without tuba...
no song is good with out a tuba
exactly
i'll say that even though i am a trumpet
sweet, trumpets can be pretty awesome but only when you play them right. I used to play trumpet
we dont have any tubas so i am thinking of switching (at school) (to tuba)
Everyone is like I'm playing this in college, I'm playing this in high school. I'm here like help me I'm playing in middle school as 1st cornet
serious? Middle School???
Hapzy Playz how are you playing in both high school and middle school?
im only playing in middle school
The music wasn't played the music played the people who were playing it
Yup, I sit right nexty to the solo Bb clarinetist, good lord he is cute and he can sight read the music. Once he got it he played like half of the runs the first time. O.O
The run is so beautiful (as a clarinet player) but it takes a looooot of working on it to get it just right
Could you tell me who performed this? Which recording it is? I'm having a difficult time finding a preferred performance for purchase... I like this one a lot!
+Hedwig Vinson Best possible recording is Frederic Fennell with Cleveland Winds on Telarc Label. It's sensational. So is the sound.

I have to play this in my high school concert band... God help me
+Lucario Swag It's not as bad as it seems, once you get started its impossible to put down
+Lucario Swag Played it for my Holiday Concert last night, I really love this music. It's one of those ones you'll never forget. :D
Enjoy it! When you're out of school you'll miss it.
The Almighty Turbo Turtle npt really too hard. I always sucked playing the trombone but this one was defenitely my favorite piece to play.
Oooh piccooloo :)
Bahaa Zahlan ;)
Am I the only one who detects a slight increase in tempo in the 3rd mvmt? I don't have my stopwatch handy.
it's in cut common time so yeah.
I had first clarinet for this and we never actually preformed it. Made me angry because I practiced it a lot.
Basso ostinato always
Piccolos and flutes all the way
Who's playing this version?
+Alex Kintzer I like to know as well. They are a very good band :)
Alex Kintzer University of North Texas
Kind of makes ya sick just how easy they make it sound. Not an easy piece.
