The pillars you see 6:30 and 9:24 aren't ruins they are decorations for the Feast of St. Dominic.
Proud to be from Valletta!!! Forza Valletta City!
If anyone wants to know anything about Valletta, just ask me.
Valletta was completely built by the Knights of St. John in 1571. Valletta was built as a celebration for the Knights, who defeated the Turkish Ottomans in the Great Siege of 1565.
The dome 15:08 is of the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as written later. The Feast in Valletta of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, was just a few weeks ago.
The 'natural swimming pool' (16:55) is where the Waterpolo club of Valletta trains: Valletta United Waterpolo Club (Valletta UTD WPC).
In Valletta we have 4 (Main) Feasts:
    1. St. Paul the Apostle
    2. Our Lady of Mount Carmel
    3. St. Dominic of Caleruega
    4. St. Augustine of Hippo
    Other small Feasts are:
    1. St. Vincent
    2. St. Elias
    3. St. John
    Other small Churches:
    1. St. Francis of Assisi
    2. St. Anne
    3. St. Nicholas
    4. Our Lady of Victories
    5. St. Barbara
    6. St. Jacob
    7. St. Roch
    8. St. Catherine of Italy
    9. Our Lady of the Pillar
    10. St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral
    11. St. Andrew's Scots Church
    12. Ta' Giezu Church

Malta is one of the most beautiful places i´ve ever been. Last year we got lost in Sliema at night. The streets were full of lights, everywhere some puppets in the windows and a very beautiful decorated church (i don´t remember the name). It was stunning and i will never forget this beautiful night. So Gabriel, just take a walk at night (also in Valletta of course). It´s beautiful. Regards from Poland

Churches in Sliema: Stella Maris, Saint Gregory, and the Sacro Cuor.
You could have gone lost in the week of one of those Feasts, that's why everything was decorated.

@luvluca toni I think that the best time to visit Malta is in Summer, as you have accessible beaches and if you like a warm/HOT Mediterranean weather. July and August, however, are very hot, maybe even TOO HOT, therefore May and September may be the best.
I think it's best visiting Valletta and Mdina at first, then you can explore the Three (Old) Cities; Senglea, Cospicua, and Vittoriosa.
But if you're not into history, and you're more into nightlife, then you must go to St. Julian's and Paceville.
Beaches can be found all over Malta.
If you're interested you may find ghost tours and ghost hunts - normally in Valletta and Mdina.
You may explore the other island - Gozo.
If you want to dive into further Maltese History, I suggest making small research, and then explore places like these:
      1. Domus Romana (in Rabat)
      2. Tarxien Temples
      3. Ggantija Temples (Gozo)
      4. Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (Tarxien/Hal Saflieni)
      5. More Ancient, historical temples, older than the Pyramids of Egypt.
      6. Skorba Village/Temples (Which is the oldest village in Malta, it's not currently inhabited, it was 'founded' in 4850 BC.)
      7. Mosta Dome (The Main Church of Mosta, dedicated to Saint Mary's Assumption.)
      8. St. Paul's Catacombs (in Rabat)
      9. Barraka Gardens (in Valletta)
      10. Valletta Waterfront
      11. Fort St. Elmo (in Valletta)
      12. Fort St. Angelo (in Vittoriosa)
      13. Cottonera Lines (in Cottonera) (Cottonera meaning: Senglea, Cospicua, and Vittoriosa - combined)
      14. Maltese Churches (365 in all)
If you'd like you may also come to watch a Maltese Football (Soccer) match, especially if the match is one of these: (Rivals)
      -Valletta vs Floriana
      -Valletta vs Birkirkara
      -Valletta vs Hibernians FC Paola
      -Valletta vs Hamrun Spartans
-Gzira United vs Hamrun Spartans (First match of the year)
      -Gudja United vs Santa Lucia
      -Gzira United vs Sliema Wanderers
-Qrendi vs Mqabba (First Division - not Premier League)
-Hibernians FC Paola vs Tarxien Rainbows
      -(Maybe) Birkirkara vs Balzan
-Qormi vs Zebbug Rangers (First Division - not Premier League)
History Note (you won't find this, we learn it at school):
-Valletta during the knights period had a population of 26,000. Now it only stands at 5,600 people.
-Mdina during the knights period had a population of 1,100. Now it only stands at 280 people.
-Senglea (L-Isla) during the knights period had a population of 8,000. Now it only stands at 2,700 people.
-Cospicua (Bormla) during the knights period had a population of 15,000. Now it only stands at 5,100 people.
-Vittoriosa (Birgu) during the knights period had a population of 8,000. Now it only stands at 2,400 people.
-Floriana (Il-Furjana) during the knights period had a population of 6,000. Now it stands at 2,000 people.
^ Those are Old Cities not yet popular for the Maltese to inhabit.
These are Old Villages that grew a lot these past years:
-Birkirkara during the knights period had a population of 500. Now it stands at 23,000 people.
-Mosta during the knights period had a population of 400. Now it stands at 20,200 people.
-Qormi during the knights period had a population of 600. Now it stands at 16,300 people.
-Zebbug during the knights period had a population of (about) 550. Now it stands at 11,800 people.
-Zabbar during the knights period had a population of (about) 500. Now it stands at 15,100 people.
-Zejtun during the knights period had a population of (about) 500. Now it stands at 11,200 people.
-Siggiewi during the knights period had a population of (about) 400. Now it stands at 8,500 people.
-Zurrieq during the knights period had a population of (about) 350. Now it stands at 10,600 people.
-Gharghur during the knights period had a population of (about) 150. Now it stands at 2,770 people.
-Mqabba during the knights period had a population of (about) 150. Now it stands at 3,300 people.
-Qrendi during the knights period had a population of (about) 150. Now it stands at 2,700 people.
-Gudja during the knights period had a population of (about) 150. Now it stands at 3,100 people.
...... etc. you get the point. :)

Great introduction to Malta Gabriel , went there 7yrs ago myself , and had a great time exploring the island . Watching you walk around Valleta and talking so naturally makes it easy to watch , and then you add bits of its history and that just takes it up to another level . Stayed in Sliema which overlooks Valetta ,and swam in the harbour there on several occasions , just like you did at the end of the video , had to be done . Thanks for the memories Gabriel , enjoy Malta

It was a real eyeful and earful going strangely different countries like Korea, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Egypt I could never forget where the olfactory of the nose has much meaning and memory as very stimulating visual and sound experiences. The first impressions always builds story book fantasy narratives in our minds that really isn't ever real, but constructs high ideals of what the world could be if perfected to a higher level of culture, environment, and quality of life for everyone. These impressions last a lifetime permanently changing the mind of a guy or gal.

But to be blown away, one needs to go inside St Johns Co-Cathedral. Head across the Grand Harbour to the 3 cities. One can spend many hours in the various museums in Valletta alone. The people are very friendly and helpful for your travels through Malta. Before you turned Left you walked past the best Pastizzi in Valletta. Sphinx

Wow, Malta is a beautiful classical military fort of a bygone great empire. I was almost expecting to see the Knights of Malta marching down the cobbled avenue in extravagant high styled shining armor doing some formal esoteric ritual for public viewing. The khaki place set against the bluest azure sky is one of the most stunning on Earth, but it's just old money aristocracy and well to do Europeans going on holiday with the occasional sprinkling of one American backpacker budget world nomad. I could easily just stay put there the rest of my life casting rod and reel, wining, and dining at my great splendid leisure.

Well Valletta was built by the knights of St. John for the knights of St. John, as you realized most of Valletta is hills , 3 to be exact, the horses find it slippery so they built steps in the streets to accommodate them!

I love Malta. Went there bout 9 yrs ago and then recently last year. It had changed so much from the last time we were there. I love it though as it is so homely n just chilled out. Getting quite busy though in some places so I tend to avoid busy places as I like to enjoy the place where I am. I love Mdina n Rabat and marsaolokk.. And St Paul's Bay. Also valetta is a lovely city. Nice not too big. Just right.

Thanks for the brief tour round the city. To look at it, you wouldn't imagine it was bombed so heavily in WW2. It was awarded the George cross medal I believe; an honour usually given to individuals, not islands (nations). I may be wrong but don't they have a history of the Knights templar, order of St John? I may be getting mixed up. Thanks again.

    • @palibrae

Knights of Malta (Knights Hospitaller, of St. John). The medal, equivalent to the Victoria Cross or Medal of Honor) is permanently on the national flag. Awarded for heroic resistance in WWII.

@@palibrae You may be wrong. I refer to the George cross awarded to the island by king George VI after the siege of Malta during WW2. Not anything to do with the catholic knights. Easy mistake to make.

Now we're talkin'. Very good first impression. I have a British phone box in front of my house (that I built - watched a youtube video on how to build one about 30 times). I didn't see any in your video but Malta seems like a good place for you to rent a scooter and cover the whole island - maybe do very slow selfie driving after you've gotten the hang of it. Ever done any motorized cycling (e-bike, scooter/moped, motorcycle)? It's pretty addictive. Islands, Mediterranean, beaches, architecture, history, a lot of pretty women everywhere you looked - you're in your element, Gabe. Kudos.

Maybe Sicily is on your agenda Gabe as it's close by. I wanted to do the tour from Malta but it's too long a day. To see Mount Etna (10,912 feet high) there would be awesome!!

gertjan van der meij Those two islands are quite different, I think.
Gran Canaria is more like a typical beach tourist destination & Malta has very few, small sand beaches but a lot of history.

I'm pretty sure that car-park thingy was a bunker during WWII. It said since 1940 which is when the siege of Malta began, Italians bombed it since it was a British colony and they were enemies.
