Excellent video, and this is a very clever idea to try to overcome Microsoft's failure to provide locked/private folders in Win 11. The presenter pointed out some of the vulnerabilities, so I do not want to be too critical, but I must point out that there is another huge vulnerability in this: If the folder is saved on your Win 11 PC to a Google Drive or One Drive folder, and then accessed from a smart phone or tablet (Apple, Android, etc.), the folder will be wide-open, and the Bat/Text file will be fully visible to anyone who accesses the folder - - so just be aware of this limitation!

Excellent video! However, to make a more secure system, especially for a very importan private folder, albeit more 'messy' to access, I suggest the following:- Create a LibreOffice document (or Word, I suppose). Call it anything you like - preferably not something which refers to Hiding folders! This file must ultimately be saved with a strong password (easily done!). Copy the contents of the batch code as you suggested, including a sensible password, (may be different to the one which will be used to save this LibreOffice file, but could be the same), into the LibreOffice document. Now, ABOVE this copied batch file information (eg at the head of the LibreOffice document, enter:- NB! First of all, create a .bat file from the text shown below at Batch file text:- (referencing the code). This will create the batch file as you suggested.
Now type a set of instructions (in this LibreOffice document), such as:-
1. Double-click on ‘FolderLock.bat’.
2. Enter the PW - YOURPASSWORD . The hidden folder will now appear as ‘Private’.
3. Double-click on ‘Private’ which will open the folder.
4. After completion of work, double-click on ‘FolderLock.bat’ again; it will ask you to confirm, and then hide the ‘PRIVATE’ folder again.
5. Now delete the batch file you created!
Now 'Save as' this LibreOffice document with a strong password. (This option is available under 'Save As')
All that will appear in the folder you are using is this password-protected LibreOffice document!
It is certainly less straightforward than your method, but no batch file appears in the folder, so it can't be hacked.
unfortunately it can be accessed using web browser ..I read a comment on the same page tried and it opened the private file ! " Just open any web browser like Chrome, MS Edge etc. and in the address bar
type file:///C:/ and hit enter. This will open the C: drive of your PC.
Navigate to that bat folder (if it's in C drive) and you'll find the locked
folder completely visible and accessible without any prompt for password.
For opening any other drive, just replace C with the respective drive
letter in file:///C:/. In short, when using your web browser as file
explorer, the locked folder isn't locked."

when i try to lock the file by typing Y, for like a millisecond, it shows ''access is invalid.'' Please tell me how to solve that issue

Nice tutorial. It works so long you are on this computer. But when you put the hard drive into an external hard drive case and connect it to another PC it again shows the content of the folder without entering a password.

There's a very big issue with this. I was messing around with the program and it seems to me that this type of protection only works if the desired, protected folder is never uploaded to a different file managing service (i.e. Google Drive). I did everything in this video exactly as instructed and it DID work but when I downloaded that same file into google drive, every last file was unprotected, leaving whoever wanted to break into my "protected" folder to snoop in all they want. It makes me very concerned that if I were to send this file to anyone, they could VERY easily break in, leaving the files and possibly me at risk. Is there any way to protect the files any better? Is this just an illusion of security? I, as well as countless others watching this video need to know if this is a reliable way of keeping your files safe before we utlize this for ourselves. Maybe there's something I haven't seen, but I don't know, and THAT'S the scary part.
This is exactly what I was thinking, it's helpful as we can see but I would never ever try this. There's something from those codes that don't feel right at all. IDK I have trust issues cus' I got laptop hacked haha

There is No need to rename the file into a control panel dot unpleasant serial reference.
There is no need to rename the file at all!! dont just copy paste from this video.
if you want to rename the file as you add "hidden" and "system" attributes to it and call it locked, you can choose whatever name you want.
FYI: you can use windows defender to add a secure folder. changes to the folder from code such as this will be blocked by the defender. wonderful job!

I thought that this was a great idea until I realized that you can just preview the batch file and read the code, and just see what the password is.
This works and ive used it in the past. The only problem this has is when you update your windows you need to repeat this process again. And thats becasue the system changes and lets say re opens and makes the code glitch out and stop working. But its easy to get into the private folder again, just delete the code that you have pasted in, Make a new txt file and just repeat the same progress as from before. Goodbyeeeeeeeee
what to do if the folder is still hidden but the .bat file is deleted by mistake?? ANY way to retrieve the lost file
Dont delete the folder i guess, Check recycling bin
yes, just create the file again, paste the code inside, save it as a ".bat" file, edit and put your old password in and start it.

Does this simply hide the folder? What if I go into file explorer settings and click show hidden files?

This method is good but a developer or a smart person can easily access the folder with command line or vs code like software

How get back the data which was stored in the folder. I accidentally moved the .bat file to another folder. When I try to open it, it is creating a new private folder, but not the previous folder in which i stored some files. What to do to get the data back. Anyone help me.....

Wonderful explanation. However, the batch file NEVER appeared in my folder. I tried it several times. I feel like an idiot now. Nothing happened. My folder is still not password protected.

That's because u don't have "notepad++" right click on the file and you'll see the "edit" option.. click on it and it'll open in notepad, u can find the password out there

What if we delete the text file
very weak method but like you said only if you dont have tech saavy people in the house but all you have to do is show hidden folders then you can see the hidden folder and access the files. so if you have hidden folders shown then this is useless. Thanks for great effort though. Alternatively you can just encrypt the folder in properties and hide it and it should be relatively secure outside of the user window (window you log in) to the outside world. But to the user on the pc they will see it. so locking your pc will secure the folder to the outside world but not within your house hold unless you dont share your user window with family/co-workers if in office environment.

i tried in properties i dont hav win 11 pro, i watch a vid it wants me to download 3rd party I think yay finally I found this vi and halfway through I am hopeful then I realise I have show hidden files enabled and don't wanna disable that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! noooooooooooooooooooooooooo, why cant it just be that simple, like the idea tho its a creative way of doing it I just don't wanna disable show widden folders and others could enable that anyway. ):

funny. not a solution at all. It just renames your folder and make it hidden, not locked. No protection from deleteing whole folder as well.
Every time I install Windows I always set few simple ticks in explorer settings: 1) show file .names 2) show hidden folders and files.
I guess only solution still is bitlocker for Windows PRO revision users, and user groups with different permissions for read/write/access.
Not really secure considering someone can just edit the bat file and change the password but kinda cool I guess

You can't.
find every instance of the word "Private" in the file and replace it with whatever you want your folder name to be.
is there to way I can't edit it without the password but the file still works running
So... Nothing stops people from editing the batch file and seeing the password in clear text? This is useless.
