Outstanding video for beginner and intermediate CNC’ers. Explained better than about anything I have seen. I think once you learn G92 and implement a tool height offset with your Z probe you’ll zero off the bed 99% of the time without worrying about carving the workpiece and changing tools.
Mark, I always learn something from each of your videos. You talked about setting the z-zero to the bed surface for through cuts. How does that work and would that help with the tape gumming up the endmill? I have been having issues with through cuts getting gummed up with the tape, both blue tape and double face tape. What is the best way to avoid this?
Thank you, John. Buildup is always a problem, no matter what kind of adhesive mounting technique you use. I've found that keeping my bits clean really helps reduce it. I use isopropyl alcohol (91%) I get at the local pharmacy to clean my bits and collet. In the past I used VM&P naphtha, but the isopropyl alcohol is much cheaper and easier to find. Both work great. By cleaning my bits after each use, I find they tend to gum up a lot less frequently. I can't explain why - I can only say that it works for me.

It is always good to learn the basics first! You have to walk before you can run (as with the touch plate). Good video.

How would you set z=0 for a surfacing bit ?
