The Audi has a more broad range of features in the US. Auto folding mirrors, auto dimming driver side mirror, full LED light package, panoramic sunroof. Subjectively, the Audi MMI system is more refined, the car is nicer looking than the golf, has better looking wheels, and is available with more than one wheel option in the US. Audi warranty, 4 years/40,000mi bumper to bumper, vw is 3 years basic, 5 years/50,000 power train. I traded a mark 6 gti for a 1800 mile 16' s3 prestige audicare. The fully loaded s3 with the service plan was the same price as the golf r DSG with drivers assistance. No regrets on getting the Audi, especially considering the marked difference in customer service I get at the local Audi dealer compared to the VW shop.
I got a 2016 Prestige with everything but the sport seats for $45k with Audicare (4 years of prepaid service). The car had 1800 miles on it... seems it someone bought it and then turned around and traded it 3 months later.
bro its the same car you could have gone and took your golf r to an audi dealer plus audi techs would love the golf r more= better treatment to your car, because now they looking at your car and saying you should have gotten rs3 instead
these cars are around the same price in the used market. you could actually get a 2014 s4 or s5 for 32 and some change if you look hard enough but i had to have apple carplay an i have a strict 3500lb and under policy. i went for the Golf R. if i ever trade this in for anyting itd better be the TTRS

I've driven both. Both feel the same. The Golf R has more headroom and more cargo space. Making it better for trips and families vs the S3. S3 is a nicer interior though
Live in Australia and I own a Brand new less than a month old Golf R with full led lights front and back, leather seats , Panoramic sunroof , DSG transmission, touch screen infotainment and a lot more pleasant interior than the Audi S3 my only gripe is VW decided not to add the folding mirror options, which is not a deal breaker for me and fixable with an after market module, I'll honestly spend that extra cash that Audi wants to tune the Golf R to turn it to a road cruise missile

Went through the debate when I wanted to trade my mk6 golf r in and the interior of the Audi was so boring compared to the R and that alone made me fee better about the money if be saving by going the VW route. Funny because Audi is supposed to have the sexier interior but not in this case.
Sorry but audi's interior (dash, vents, even how buttons feel when pressed) are miles better than the R's. Also, audi's diamond-quilted sports seats are AGES beyond the pretty horrid looking seats in the R. So yea... you are dead wrong

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am currently deciding between the R and the S3, and I've sat in both. I would absolutely agree that most Audi interiors put most VWs to shame, but the 3 series, even the fully-loaded S3 just doesn't feel special. In fact, I personally prefer the R's interior. I find the S3's dash to be too plain, the vents are ugly and cheap feeling, and the pop-up screen just doesn't look right. Furthermore, I find the R's seats to be more comfortable. These are just my opinions though. I wouldn't say you're "wrong" for feeling otherwise.
I looked at both of these... you can't get a sunroof or LED headlights with the Golf R and the centre armrest storage is factory sealed by VW. These quirks plus the local VW salesperson was a bit of a jerk... Audi customer service was much better!! If you can afford the extra $$ go with the Audi!!
