I must have missed it but if not, the fact that they updated the master rule to allow xyz and synchro back in the main zones without link arrows was the biggest boost to bring the deck back, along with zeus.
"This card can be treated as two xyz materials" was such a cool effect whenever it appeared in the anime, here it was implemented in the worst possible way
Aaaaaaa!!! I know, right?! I was disappointed when I started getting back into the game after watching Zexal and felt cheated by the dookie TCG effects lol
I believe that Zoodiac was the first archetype to have a strictly one-card combo, being able to end on drident + hammerkong with any Zoodiac main deck monster, or even more than that if they drew Ratpier.
Zoodiac is like the yugioh equivalent of the main protagonist in a video game. Allow them one liberty, and they'll rob you blind and burn your city to the ground.
I would personally love to see a video on either Dragon Rulers or Spyrals because this was a pretty good and educational video with top-notch quality. Excellent work, I would love to see more!
Zoodiac is definitely one of the if not THE most prevalent cards the TCG/OCG ever saw. It’s amazing how often it takes advantage of the resources around it. I love the fact that Boarbow and RamRam were underwhelming when they first released and later found utility because of Zeus and Imper respectively.
How good was Sky Striker ACTUALLY? How good was Spyrals ACTUALLY? How good was Dragon Rulers ACTUALLY? How good was Lightsworn ACTUALLY? How good was Blackwings ACTUALLY?

Man I didn’t play the TCG or even watch it until this year. so this history is amazing and let’s me catch up on what the past meta was and get an explanation on why some stuff is banned. In 2017 I mainly played duel links. And before that I didn’t touch the TCG sense I was a kid.
Stevie: This archetype has handtraps, has a good turn 1, can Special Summon a lot of Monsters from the GY, and the card core is pretty small. Also Stevie: UNFORTUNATELY... (Explain why the archetype mentioned above is bad or mediocre compared to the competition) Stevie: And with all that said and the various unfavorable conditions, it leads to this archetype falling into Untiered.
Zoodiac will always strike fear into me even if it’s been slaughtered by the ban list. I didn’t even play when it was first dominant, it just scares the hell out of me.
An interesting metric for “how good x archetype was” might be how many cards they have on the banlist and for how long they stayed there since getting hit.
@@glacierwolf2155 true, but they are the only lore limits on the list. Also, Exodia did get a top 8 finish at the 2012 World Championship by some miracle, but I wouldn’t count it as a real top either.
Who would have thought that an archetype of monsters that basically circumvent an entire summoning mechanics own built In rules and restrictions would be good right? I mean just thinking that they really thought it was a safe idea to make an XYZ based archetype entirely built around being able to XYZ summon using only a single monster is nuts. Imagine a new Synchro archetype that all the monsters said they were both a tuner and non tuner and could synchro with themselves combining their own level twice: i.e. a level 4 would be able to synchro with itself into a level 8 synchro. Or a level 3 being able to synchro with itself into a level 6 synchro. U get the idea. It would of course be ridiculously broken.
1 card synchros are common tbh. It isn't 1 card literally, but they summon the tuner or non tuner, from deck. i.e. Hajun the winged Mayakashi, or Karakuri Merchant. Both are summoning their ultimate boss monster. The only thing kept them for being meta, probably because how underwhelming the boss monster they summon is. And the overall archetypal consistency.
@@edhikurniawan yeah those are fair because at least u still bring out another monster to field to make the Synchro. But imagine not needing any other monsters to access your extra deck monsters. Idk why they ever thought Zoo was good idea

An interesting take on this would be something like how good was ash blossom for example or with similar staples. I don't comment much but this series is great
The biggest indicator of how good Zoo was is just the absolute amount of bans it took to make sure the deck stayed down. If you unbanned every card on the forbidden list the best deck isn't some dumb FTK with infinite consistency, no its zoo.
anyone else remember getting lied to by someone saying that the extra attack would double upon a second stack (I remember this in a roblox ygo game since those were manual and not automatic.) and when you called them out they kept insisting so you believed them even though you originally knew it was bs?
Konami's biggest mistake has always been, and always will be, the release of Invasion of Chaos. That specific set doomed Yugioh to its current form. Not that I don't like how Yugioh is played, is my favorite TCG, BUT from a game design standpoint, it is fucked up. And Invasion of Chaos cemented that.
@@sadrobot5501 let’s not pretend like yugioh pre invasion of chaos would be fun for more than a few months. The only reason yugioh has gone on this long is because konami is constantly trying to innovate. They just fuck up majorly sometimes. CED, adventurer, zoodiac, Dad etc...
I would also love to see you analyze Sky Striker or Invoked. Both of them have seen competitive play for years and learning about their many variants would be interesting.
The most ridiculous part of this deck was how little of it you needed to be able to do some truly obnoxious crap. Ratpier, Barrage and the XYZs could be shoved into pretty much anything running Beast Warriors or even just Rank 4s. The rest of the main deck was so irrelevant that Pot of Desires was basically just a Pot of Greed for them.
The best part of this video is the old clips from that era. Like the cimo video showing how to do the fusion sub combo, the one we all watched, let's be honest. And the farfa video complaining about bad players, I think it's from "signs you suck at competitive ygo"
This is the last deck I played when I quit yugioh. I played zoodiac heros it was after rat got down to 1 but the end board full combo was bahamut shark, toadally, dark, law and drident, along with whatever back row you drew with daigusto we were running all the solemns and triple d barrier so almost guaranteed disruption it was such a great deck.
@@bl00by_ Yeah Spyral was just perfectly placed for link format. Masterplan giving infinite link material, no restrictions, valuable discards. The Spyral cards are goodish but the main thing is they can be exploited b so many generic enablers
Zoodiacs were broken because they were the first archetype to use the "1 card into [Archetype-Specific] Summon with minimal restrictions" on an actually *good* type of summon. it's funny how zoo is the best archetype ever created without competition to this date but somehow it isn't even halve as bad playing in a full power zoo format compared to what we have seen other time including it not even being nearly a tier 0 format. zoos consistency and splash ability makes it strong but drident is one of the fairest boss monsters ever created. all she does is to pop a card that and is easily beatable by most normal summons while you can't even do anything against spell/traps. compare that to every modern card trying to have as little weaknesses as possible
Imo the difference is that modern decks have visible weaknesses somewhere that can be hard to patch up, but zoodiac's weaknesses can be patched up easily cuz the archetype does so much for so little investment in card economy
what makes drident so powerful is how easy you can get her out and how much combos that one card enables, i play tri zoo in master duel and drident helps makes the deck even more consistent
