I did it that way to check my one and it worked.

Replace with a washer see how it works, less seal leaks from over pressure when cold.

Not really. Well..it will open but if you heat up one side more than the other you can mess up the coil. Speaking from experience.

if the radiator and hoses are hot does that mean the thermostat is opening?

No. The temperature has to get up to 165 to 170 degrees for the thermostat to open.

They should open at about 190 to 195
