    Using the triggers to open the gates on the drum mics is next level live drum sound engineering (and potentially a useful studio technique, too!).

    • @compucat
      @compucat Рік тому +17

      I like to take this one step further on live rigs by swapping the gate for a dynamic EQ (usually Waves F6). That gives me a bit more fine grained control - you can effectively create different release times per frequency band. Short decay for HF (minimizes cymbal bleed), long decay for LF (avoids accidentally cutting off resonance on toms).

      It is. Ellie Goulding’s and Katy Perry’s team does this for s while too.
      Very usefull.

      I don’t really get that part about the kit.
      What does gating the sound mean in drums?

    • @DaveMcCall
      @DaveMcCall Рік тому +14

      @@MrLJdizzle A gate cuts off an audio signal from a microphone until a certain threshold is reached. It helps prevent unwanted noise bleed into microphones. On a noisy stage in a loud venue (like how every Twenty One Pilots show is), leaving drum mics "open" all the time would pump all those unwanted sounds through the PA system and monitoring system. By using a hard gate on each drum mic and then using a drum trigger to open the gate, the live sound engineer can precisely control how long each drum mic is passing signal. It's a useful way to keep unwanted sounds out as well as precisely control the length of decay for each drum mic. You could make the snare tight and snappy with a fast decay or long and drawn out and change that from song to song even. It's a pretty brilliant way to have a ton of control over the sound of every drum without using samples to replace the real drum sounds.

    Wouldn’t the TMC-6 be a quicker, more solid midi converter instead of the TD-50?

    @FatherJohn I'm baffled as to how the Controlled Sound X lasts longer than the P77. I thought the more plies you had is the more durable it is but that's astounding since I prefer the CS-X cuz of the open sound...can always muffle it to sound like the P77 but not vice versa.
