The community is upset about losing the FD but nobody wants to step up and volunteer. Shame really that volunteerism has been replaced by the all mighty $. Sad trend in todays world :(
I'm a Career Firefighter of 15 years and a volunteer for 22 years. I've made my way up to Fire chief of the Volunteer dept. I'm on. It's sad to say, but volunteering isn't a priority anymore to people or their community. I'm hopeful for the future now. I recently started a "Junior Firefighter" program for any High School student age 16 and 17. They get all the training, gear and respond on emergencies with us. We cant have them fight fire or respond on EMS or Car accidents. Hook them while they are young...that's the way to do it lol
I’m a junior firefighter I get training gear and everything have a pager and I can go on any emergency I want I can do everything at them only thing I can’t do is work the ladder and jaws of life and run into the building but I can fight it from the outside
@@theexperience6448 every place is a bit different. I'm restricted due to my board that oversees the department. I get to make all operational decisions, but the legal aspects is from the board. There is a thought process behind it, it's not all legal stuff. 1) as a 16 year old, you don't need to see some of the stuff that is out there yet (i.e. EMS calls, suicides, Car Accident fatalities etc.) Protecting the young minds. 2) There are not only legal ramifications if a 16 or 17 year old gets hurt or killed on a fire, there is the public perception of your department (Doesn't matter if everything was done right, sometimes shit just happens). In Indiana you can not obtain a firefighter certification till you are 18. You can start training at 17 years and 1 week old (No idea how or why they came up with that). I also keep operations to "If you're not certified you don't go" Meaning EMS calls. Like I said, every place is a bit different in how they operate. If you're that upset enough to show up to a meeting and state your voice, then you have that same amount of time and ambition to fix said problem as well. Instead, let's continue to complain, watch the fire station shut down, then relieve the stress and anxiety to the local surrounding departments, where their response time will be twice as much and twice and crucial, and then that builds on the whole new age old problem "What took you guys so long?" Trust me when I say this, it's been this way then, and will continue to be so: YOU, and ONLY you are the problem AND the solution.
It's difficult for a young, married person with a job to spend hours of training, drills meetings, call to volunteer to be a firefighter these days. I joined the volunteer fire service in 1961 and still can do some things, like run the pump. The training consisted of about 20 hours of State requirements. Further training was taught by the officers. People just don't have the time for the amount of required training to be a volunteer firefighter

Employers in pa can not punish or fire an employee if they miss work for a fire call. Employees can also leave early for fire calls too
