John Francis Campbell: Stories of a Life and a Life of Stories

  • John Francis Campbell (1821-85) is best known today as the compiler and editor of 'Popular Tales of the West Highlands', four volumes of priceless Gaelic stories and lore gathered by a team of collectors under his direction. In this talk, Dr Domhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of Material Culture and Gàidhealtachd History at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI, will use the National Library’s extensive collections to chart Campbell’s eventful and extraordinary life.
    This talk is part of the events programme for the Library's special exhibition 'Sgeul | Story: Folktales from the Scottish Highlands', which is free to visit at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh from 9 June 2023 - 20 April 2024.
    This event will take place on-site at the National Library of Scotland, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh and will be live-streamed for online viewing. Book your ticket to attend the event on-site or to watch online.
