@@WxIxLxLxIxAxMxS That’s true. According to Jim Henson himself, it was rather easy for him to come up with the ideas for every commercial. Why? ...Jim hated coffee himself, and said that the scenarios he made are what it would actually take to get him to drink coffee.
His commercials are symbolic of how corporations often use advertising to manipulate people into buying things without any regard for truth, and without any regard for their customer's actual best interests. It might have helped to sell those brands, because they were funny and memorable, but they also helped to encourage people not to take advertising at face value, and to think about advertising in general more critically.
So, while it is true that these commercials show a darker side to Jim Henson, he was actually leveraging this darker side to satirize the injustice of corporate dishonesty for the benefit of the public good. He succeeded in subverting corporate greed toward bettering the public good even when he was just doing commercials for large processed food corporations. Even when he was selling out he somehow turned it into something wholesome and beneficial for society.
Kermit: “Would you rather have Red Diamond Coffee or Wilkins Coffee?”

There was a TV show, but it didn't involve Wilkins and Wontkins. From 1956-61, Jim Henson had program called "Sam and Friends"
on WRC-TV after the 11 O'Clock News. Wilkins Coffee and Esskay
Meats were the sponsors. This popular show is notable for the early
appearances of Kermit the Frog.

Wait, I'm confused. Are Red Diamond and Wilkins the same company? These are the exact same commercials that Henson did for Wilkins, but with better cameras and in color. Anyone care to clear up my confusion?

When these spots were made, coffee was largely a regional product; Wilkins was the brand of Washington DC. There were some national brands coming out like Folger's and Maxwell House, but every market had a few brands you couldn't get anywhere else. (Think of NYC's Chock Full of Nuts or Boyd's in Portland, OR.) The owner of Wilkins Coffee learned that he could buy the ten-second spaces between TV shows for a really low price, so he hired Jim Henson to create these quick spots - eight seconds for the gag, followed by a two-second shot of the product. They worked well. Jim Wilkins was also the president of the National Coffee Association. He brought these commercials to a meeting and told all his friends that they should get into these ads...which they did. The neat thing about these spots is they're portable...Wontkins could say he "never touched" Super Gasoline or Heavenly Cheese as easily as he "never touched" Wilkins Coffee.

It's like how Jim Varney's "Earnest" character used the same scripts for various regional brands. One of the only unique campaigns was for Braum's stores.
I hate how they made the commercials slightly slower in comparison to the faster pace of the Wilkins commercials.

BTW, the two characters are named Wilkins (the brown character) and Wotkins (the brown character). Like most of Jim Henson's early puppets, they're abstract designs, and aren't meant to resemble any sort of creature.
