- A look at the two early 90s JVC SVHS VCRs I bought in 2020 for projects, the common issues that can arise in them, and how one can address them. The models featured in this video are the HR-S4700U and HR-S6800U, but these issues extend to other models that came out in the early 90s as well.
This information likely does not help with late 90s decks that use the dynamic drum system... I have no experience with those models.

I bought a 6600u at Goodwill for $20. I was so exited about this unit and couldn't wait to see it working. Instead, I got really bad static across the screen, like half the picture shows at best. I can not get the thing to track no matter what I adjust. I was ready to give up and return it. But I think I will replace that capacitor on the drum board. Thanks for the info. I'm glad this video finally popped up in my feed.

Enjoyed your video. I have long loved JVC Vcrs from this period and have experienced many of these issues. I also have the HR-S10000u. It has a rubber tire based idler. I don’t think it is as snappy of a mech compared with the HR-S6700U. It does have way more features though.
Interesting to see, I have a HR-D560E which is a European PAL machine. Just a regular 2 head mono and SP only from about 1990 but it looks almost exactly the same inside. It also have had some of the same problems. It has had the guide posts coming loose I have also recapped and changed a few diodes in the power supply. Now it has developed that little thing with the idlers. But no tracking issues yet (thankfully).
I had the same problem with my JVC I was so pissed I also replaced every cap in there ,no more JVC for me.

for the gear on the capstan motor, i had a cracked one who litteraly fell off.
i didn't bother to search a replacement : simply glued it with cyanoacrylate.
sure it make a bit of a tractor noise in fast forward/rewind due to the gap in the gear, but it work flawless.
and an already cracked gear will probabely be more stable in time as it doesn't suffer from any pressure from the shaft anymore.
3D printing may also be a solution nowdays.
I have two HR-S4700EG's, which are the Euro counterparts and indeed different to the HR-U4700. The PSU appears superficially the same, but obviously requires 220V mains, and has an ungrounded Europlug socket on the back which is enabled by a relay when the VCR is powered, presumably for a set-top box or decoder. There's an additional PCB inside the PSU which folds over 90º in a U-shape, and has connectors leading to it where the 4700U's PSU seen here has an empty cutout in the sheet metal.
These VCRs are great when they work but are indeed dogged with LOTS of issues. The head drum caps on both of my units are actually TTH type, though not sure if those are factory or have been replaced (in which case it was a pretty clean repair job). Also had the idler issue, pulley gear crack and fall off, plus leaking caps, blown fusible resistors and optocouplers in both PSUs.
As you mention, JVC used crappy caps in these PSUs, and was even dumb enuff to place them right next to the hot secondary rectifier heatsink with practically no space to spare! What an idiotic design!!! If you aren't familiar with working on switching mode PSUs, diagnosing any issue beyond leaking caps in these things can be a frustrating and dangerous exercise -- it took me months to figure out why it blew that fusible resistor!
One common issue you didn't mention -- and I'm surprised you didn't experience it yet -- is failing SMD caps in the video and audio processing sections. These reside on small modules soldered (!) with edge connectors onto the PCBs, and are a b*tch to remove. Both of my units developed these faults (telltale signs: distorted/sputtering HiFI or only linear audio; on the video board, I understand they develop colour banding issues, though I didn't wait for that to happen). I also pulled a few corroded PCB traces when removing those caps, and they're a royal PITA to repair. I replaced those caps with miniature TTH types bent on their sides; looks silly, but works and will hopefully last longer.

Yeah, all three machines have fully working Hi-Fi somehow. I'm not touching those caps until I have to. I'm pretty good with getting them off boards without pulling traces, but that doesn't mean I like doing it ;)
@@Oklawolf I guess it depends on the batch/brand of CrapCaps[tm] they used. First challenge will be to unsolder the daughterboards from the PCB; I used a solder wick with lots of patience. 😩
There's no way you can replace the caps while those boards are soldered in.
I forgot to mention the Euro models of course have two Cenelec/SCART connectors on the back, plus the RCA and Hosiden/MiniDIN inputs behind the lower right front flap. And of course the playback does indeed reveal People Are Lavender @50Hz. 😜
I Own a HR-S5900 SVHS from new and it is still playing. Use it to copy tapes to Harddisk for a museum.

Hello, I have a question about my HR-S6600U. I have replaced the capacitor, and I am still having issues with the video. The audio still works, but the video only appears for a second when I twist the Jog control wheel. What do you think is wrong?
Hard to say without seeing it, but make sure the tape guides are going all the way up. One of my machines did that when the supply side wasn't engaging all the way. The fix was to get underneath and press the retaining pin back in. They can work their way loose.
I've tried a dozen different tapes some that were recorded on this JVC Super VHS ET #HR-S5911U some factory new and old. Play's fantastic for about 30 seconds then goes blue for 10sec. throughout the whole tape. Tried recording something fresh and it does the same. I cleaned it properly and checked tracking. Any idea's?

@@Oklawolf cool. Have you ever heard of that issue with any model? it's also happening with my other S-JVC different model. But the same tapes play fine in a cheap no name model in my RV.
I would say make sure the transport is fully working, replace that surface mount electrolytic on the drum board (they always fail), and if it still had issues I'd probably want to take the drum apart to clean the contacts in there. VCR repair isn't really my area of training, so I can only help out with the issues I've personally experienced. 12voltvids would likely know a lot more about this issue than I do.

But seriously, I suspect it's detecting noise and muting the video (I have a Mitsubishi that does the same). I'd suspect either a servo issue (listen for periodic "hunting" sounds on the capstan/drum motors) or bad caps in the head amp. For the latter, you're best off checking the FM signal from the head amp with a scope; does it fade after 30 seconds?
Do you have a video on how to recap power supply on 4700u and how to diagnose if they need recapped my svhs 4700u will not power up
I recapped all three of mine before I started doing UA-cam so there's no video on that. Use low ESR 105 degree parts. It'll definitely need recapping... it's a switching power supply, so any little problem with the caps will take them down. My original 4700U did exactly that same thing about a year into owning it from brand new. The caps JVC used were garbage. Make sure you change out the one on the drum board, too.
I also have a svhs jvc that will play the tape but not wind it up so i get tape unwinding inside the machine
Idler issues - if it's this same transport, the gear drive idler assembly is gummed up and needs greasing. If it's the older transport with the big rubber idler tire, it'll probably need one of those. Hard to find... see my BR-S605 video for details.
