A Reason Not to Worry What Others Think
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- We spend a little too much time worrying about how we must appear in the minds of others. However, the poignant, useful truth is that almost everyone doesn't care at all about who we are, what we're doing and how we've messed up.

“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus is a large painting from the 1560s that hangs in Belgium’s largest museum, the Musée des Beaux Arts - and is held to be a meticulous copy of an original (now lost) work by the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It shows a superficially bucolic scene: ships are taking sail, a shepherd is tending to his flock, distant cities look prosperous and ordered…”

"We lie awake at night wondering how we could cope without the approval of people we don't even like very much."
Yes, I agree, that is a profound statement uttered within this interesting insight of thought.
My favorite statement of the film
A very accurate description of me during high school.
In other words, stop being people pleasers
fordgt402 Problem is, humans are hardwired to worry about what other people think of us. In primitive times, if members of the tribe didn’t like us we could be shunned and would die. We needed their approval in order to remain within the tribe and have the protection of being part of a group. So we worry about those who appear to dislike us, as we fear the negative consequences of their dislike.
“It never ceases to amaze me: We all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Think about this: others people's voices were before our own. We heard others in chilhood before hearing ourselves.
Who said that we love ourselves more than other people, cause that’s nonsense
Anny mentally healthy people do for the most part
blackout2430 I’d have to disagree, even if you are mentally healthy I’d say everyone has trouble loving themselves from time to time, whether it’s how you look or a quality that you don’t believe is desirable, I think it’s something everyone struggles with
Anny which is why I said “for the most part” because it’s coming from my own experiences lol
"We are at the center of the galaxy only in our own tortured minds."
GSP, one of the most famous MMA fighters ever, said he would go into cities and watch people in the streets go about their daily lives, just to see that he wasn't the main focus of everyone's minds all the time like his anxiety pointed to.
I guess for this we just gotta work on lessening overall anxiety levels and keep reminding ourselvds of the bullshit excessive focus on this brings, and that the proper perspective is people only judge you momentarily, when they're not too busy with their own lives.

I read this as he said the word "bucolic"
Mel mad at them 4 killing Jesus & not the other prophets? Mel is obviously only seeing his own limited version of things. Mel & others obviously still must not realize the harsh price to be paid for simply. Telling ppl the harsh truth & not what they want to hear. Usually= Hatred & possibly Death. The bible doesn't say the truth will set you free for nothin. Sadly most reject the harsh truth in general & prefer to replace it with untruthful lies that help them sleep it night.

Do you care? So why should others?
My psychoterapist said, "if you want to defeat your shame or fear of other people's opinions, you should do little things that make you feel ashamed or scare you. Step by step, you wouldn't care anymore".

To those whom taking my sarcastic comment seriously i assure you i didnt miss the point i only added some humor here.

The myth of icarus resonates to me very much as i also hope those around me to be content as the world is not going to stop whether we got there or not..
LMAO so true, he totally contradicts himself!!
Icarus isn't real, it's a myth taught everywhere in the world through time. You are not a famous myth, not at least a myth, you are real. School of life spoke about the paint. Remember last time someone felt in the street near you ? no, because you are focused on where you want to go, your phone, what you want to do, what your friend said. Even you saw someone fall in front of you, you would not care of it or just 3s and forget him. Just do whatever you want because people in general dont care and will forget you with time.
@@9Angelus9 so you would let people fall in front of you and not stop to see if they were okay? God, you're a prick and I hope you trip up in the street and people just walk past you so you know how it feels. People like you is how society is so messed up, shame on you and those who liked your comment. As for me, I've stopped for people who I saw fall over and when I fell over, at least someone stopped for me. I'm also guessing you also wouldn't phone the emergency services on someone else's behalf just because there's no benefit to you personally
Angeline Turner I hope the world isn’t filled with snowflakes like you throughout my lifetime.

You just say shit, you speak and you don't even know me. Im really not that type of person, really far from it. It was a fucking example for the video, don't exit from the context. you speak to me like if was a devil or the world was evil. you just invented a life to me. you speak about bad people of this society. You seem to be one because you judge people and not even trying to understand them or even knowing them at least. I hope you don't do that in real life because that's what make a suicidal person commit suicide, a shy guy more shy, an introvert more introvert.
In short:
Don't worry about what people think about you because the fact is-they are not even thinking about you in the first place.

Lol
In my early 30's I went to nice restaurants by myself without anything to read or do. I'd ask the maitre for a table for one, read the menu and basically just sit there waiting for food. Enjoy my meal, pay and leave. I did this because I liked eating in nice restaurants and wanted to enjoy the experience without having to find someone enjoyable to go with. But I learned a lot more. The world didn't end. As I looked around at other tables I noticed no one cared. I just had to get pass the waiters asking "Are you waiting for someone?" They didn't care. They just wanted to know when to proceed. And if anyone did care why should that matter to me?
It was one of the most uncomfortable things I ever did but ended up improving my life more than I would have thought. It was years before I even realized how that experience had changed me. I'd go back to it as proof to me that others don't really care that much about others...not in a negative way. People help others when needed, but they don't obsess on every detail of other peoples lives. They may make a comment but a minute or two later they forget they even made the comment.
I'm 63 now. What a wonderful life I'm having.

@@standupstraight9691 How does this manage to be the most clever and stupid thing I've read on UA-cam?
Wise but difficult. I wasted my teens and twenties doing nothing because I feared what others thought. I'm an extreme case, but someone has to be. Now I'm 31 and it's too late.
You HAVE to go ahead and do what you believe will ultimately make you confident enough to do what will make your life better. I was EXACTLY like this, though in only 22. You are no doubt more experienced than me in many ways, but the truth is I said exactly what you said at the end of high school when I felt I hadn't done enough, and that I was the same old sack of shit. I said it was too late but off to college I went. Nothing changed for a long time until I hit rock bottom and stopped caring about myself altogether. Once I didn't care I couldn't take it anymore, I ran outside and tried to be what I wanted to, only a few months ago. I found that even if you don't fit with your identity initially, you'll grow into it as you become more confident, and it'll be natural. Be yourself, but be the best version you can make. The fact is that however late it is now, you will have wished you'd done better the last time you decided it was to late to do whatever you wanted. If you don't get better now at 31, you will ask yourself why you sat idly by when you turn 41. If you say it's too late now, you will regret this inaction in a few years, and the cycle will repeat. I understand the stigma of being 30, but youre still plenty young to evolve.
You're no different to most people, crippled with insecurities. It's not until you get older when you usually stop caring and realise what's important, so never think it's too late. Your best years are no doubt ahead of you. Go and grab life by the balls!!
It's never too late
Nooo it's not too late! Go live your life!

If someone does truly care about you, that's the one time that you should care about what they think.
STRANGERS or people who you don't like don't care about you.
Correct - most people are simply preoccupied with themselves. Like grown infantile children in their own sandbox of life.

Sure some people will dislike you, but there will be others that like you for being you...but you can't find those amazing people unless you start living authentically
These are the facts of life my friend.
So true. And most people don't even care enough about you to invest necessary amount of time and effort to make a judgement that is even close to the truth. Right now people's opinions about me can be divided to completely contadictive opposites and I'm still the same person with pretty well developed personality. Later on those opinions will even furteher radicalize, living me with absolutely no control over it. Trying to appeal to others expectations and hoping to achive certain opinion is pointless. That would involve expecting them to treat you fairly.
Exactly, I believe in order for us to truly and utterly be introspective within ourselves we must stop trying to live up to others and live by our own creed. This is hard to be accepted by many because of being ridiculed or being outcasted. We have all struggled with this. From my perspective when I was growing up(More common now) being a metalhead at an all-black school and even being poor effected my mentality as I was expected to wear and be a certain way because of my environment. That fear of being"the black sheep" looms over many. The few of us who can step outside understand the importance of not only caring less about others opinions of us, but that our own pursuit of happiness is the most vital.

"We lie awake at night wondering how we can cope without the approval of people....We don't even like very much."
That hit me in my soul.
It's very difficult to stop being obsessively self conscious once you've become accustomed to thinking like that. But try to think of a time where you saw somebody else do something so inexplicably embarrassing. You probably have seen it, but you almost definitely don't remember it and if you do, you RARELY think of it. I myself can't recall any instance. Putting things in perspective often times helps us understand who we are better.
Good point.
Well said.
I already didn’t care, I just needed a reason. Thanks
The reason is that they dont think about their issues in you, minding you connecting with their lives would be a waste for them. in the end they dont think about you
It's stupid to care what people think, because everyone have their own opinion and perspective, making it hard for them to really know you in the first place. I do whatever I want and sometimes people look at me like I'm an idiot but I know that they don't even know me so who cares.
"I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is Character."
-Theodore Roosevelt
“What others think about you is none of your business” think about it
Adrian Derrett it kinda is your business tho. If your Boss thinks “Damn Tom is a pretty shitty worker” and fires you subsequently, how is that none of your business? Or when your class thinks you are a weirdo so they bully you, even though you did nothing wrong, how is that none of your business?? It actually affects you quite a bit
@@katenka_ana3997 "Thinking" alone and "thinking + actions" are two different things. If people's "thoughts" will be affecting you (externally; not your own thoughts about what they think of you) , then it is your business. Otherwise, I kinda agree with the quote.
Hazelnut ice cream I don’t think it’s any of our business what others think about us because if we think too much about it that can cause us anxiety and stress there will always be people who dislike us and we just have to accept that we can prove them wrong or we can just move on and not care essentially
@@katenka_ana3997 This quote is in reference to living your truth. There is only one of you and you are on your own personal journey in life. If you make decisions based on what other people might think or want, you'll never fulfill your true destiny. Now when it comes to your job, spouse, family and best friends, of course you have to take their thoughts and feelings into consideration if you want to keep your job and having meaningful relationships. But at the end of the day, it's still your choice. It's like the quote, " A lion doesn't concern itself with the thoughts of the sheep." If an animal cared about the feelings of its prey, it would soon starve and die. It has to be its true self to live. Ever wonder why so many humans have starving souls? They care too much what others think.
I kinda disagree because the truth is, other people shape our identity. What others say still affect our mental, emotional, and social being. Like, when we post something on Instagram, don't you think we only post those that make us look good? We adapt to society. And part of that adaptation is to learn what others around you does and doesn't do. And if we commit a mistake, other's judge us as someone who didn't live up to the expectations of society. Then we'll feel bad. Thus, we do anything to make us seem normal and to 'belong'. We didn't became who we are without them. Admit it or not, we rely on others' opinion about us to build our self-concept.
I used to be people pleaser.
My family (not all) is very critical of me, they'll get mad at me whenever I made a slight mistake. This caused me to be a people pleaser. I kept thinking about how people judge me, I tried to be the person everyone like, I tried to follow what other people say in order to be liked. The result? It made me unhappy and instead of getting liked by everyone, alot of people were disappointed when they know my real self and started to distance themselves from me, instead of a friend, people sees me as someone who will do what they say, a slave.
After I graduated from middle school (the education system in my country have 3 years of middle school then followed by 3 years of high school), I moved to another city and decided to cut ties with my toxic family members. I stopped being a people pleaser. Now I have a group of friends that actually like me for who I am, not because I'm nice and will do anything they say. I often still help people like I used to do before as a people pleaser but I learned to say no sometimes. I've never been this happy before. Sure, some people dislike me but there's always someone who dislike you and compared to the amount of people who dislike me when I was a people pleaser with now, the amount of people who dislikes me now is way lesser than before.
And for other people pleaser who read this, don't be afraid to be yourself. I know that opening yourself is scary and challenging so take it little by little. You don't have to change in an instant, just change yourself in your own pace. You can do it! ❤
First of all, thanks for sharing your story, I really can relate with this. Secondly, my English is not very good, in case you see any grammatical error.
Unfortunately I realized I was a pleaser too late I believe (at 19) and I used to act like that because of the way I was raised. Now, I'm trying little by little to show my family and friends who I am. 🙌🏾👏🏾❤

I think this exposes the problem of social media. THAT WAS FANTASTIC - It puts every venture into perspective. Life is short, live it and don't worry if you mess up along the way, nobody is that interested.
It's kinda scary to make mistakes nowadays compared to the past because of social media. Like you might get to see yourself became a meme, a laughing stock.
@@sarahy.2442 Not always, that's why it's sometimes called "a fate worse than death"
Especially for younger people. Then again, memes come and go. You might become a meme now but in a few weeks, someone else will replace you. Memes don't last forever.
Memes come and go. What's the big deal?
@@migspeculates when they come, you're a laughing stock. and when they go, you're simply a dead meme and that's all you'll be known for, that one dead meme.

Indeed, “we are at the center of the galaxy in our own tortured minds.” I love that thinking. So thoughtful.
I feel like my soul just got lighter
(P.s. who agrees that his voice is so soothing?)
I actually felt like this. I felt like I had to always post something good on social media to make people see that I'm happy and doing good..but realized I was doing it not for my own satisfaction, but for theirs.
I since deleted all my social media accounts, and I must say, I feel like I've taken a HUGE load off my brain.
i am in my bed crying disappointed with myself and very annoyed with how i am constantly judged, and my self-esteem is getting lower and lower, i go on youtube and this is the first video i see. good job youtube, good job 👏
Stay strong fella. Try to develop a habit of positivity in all spheres of your life.
Basically think of the atmosphere around you floating with positive and negative bubbles so once you consciously try to be positive you will automatically attract more positivity towards you.
It might seem difficult in the beginning but as they say - "Rome wasn't built in a day."
Take small steps and be positive. Good luck and have a good life ahead. 🙏😊

Do remember you are not alone. There are millions who feel the same way. We all are fighting our small little battles and there are many who could relate to you.
So if we can help each other out... The faster we see a change for good. 😊
Keep the faith alive and keep marching forward. 👏👏👏👏
@@vijayippagunta8683 amen!
As long as we don't harm people they will likely not notice us or remember us. Maybe a fleeting thought for a couple of moments every now and then; not more, not less. It's indeed sad but simultaneously liberating.

You worry that your business won't succeed; instead your health breaks down. Worrying is the one game in which if you guess right, you don’t get any satisfaction out of your genius.
@Facing Your Dragons: The Beginning Pointless is pointless. Life inherently is pointless.
I love how the video is explaining that no one cares about no one, and still manages to make it a relief ! Seriously though , i love this channel
I thought you have to worry about what people think of you because you always think good of yourself but sometimes you have to look from an other perspective to be able to rightfully determine whether what you are doing is right (what is right depends on your principles). However it is true that in doing so you might lose your confidence and start questioning yourself. I think this is what causes anxiety and depression - having no one that can relate to you.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Thank you for this...I'm going through this .I want to get out of this

You cannot own your future if you care what others think. I live by it. It is the path to true happiness and peace. It has also alienated many of my loved ones because they don't understand it. It's their problem, not mine.
That's why it's important to be free and not care what others think! Everyone is too worried about their own life troubles to even think about others!!
I've never really cared what people think of me. I'm more worried about what my loved ones think of me. I just live a good life, full of honesty and integrity.:)
Unless of course, after 5 decades thinking that your “loved” ones loved you, your rose- colored glasses were finally knocked off your face & it became clear that you’ve been living with a group of narcissistic sociopaths. They actually hate me & have been doing a slow emotional rape. Let the smear campaign continue. I will not let them kill me. Karma.
Dmomjs, do you live in japan? From you description it has to be Japan or jahell is what I call it.
Liar
It's never easy to not care what others think of us. People intentionally try to disrespect, mock and insult us when they feel sense of jealousy or competition. We try to ignore but it certainly affects because they always find ways to disturb our sanity until we retaliate.
Def Agree!
What an insightful way to start a video, the biggest proof of everyday issues, immortalized for the ages to come, a painting. Very descriptive and true to life at the moment. A reminder of what society is at said time.
Our fears are nothing new.
But it's hard to not think it's just us.
Thanks for sharing this. I needed it. I'll be confident enough, to make my own center of the universe at peace.
Summary: Don’t care about what people think, because no one notices you
Not sure if i should be offended or inspired
asami. It's more like: Dont care about what people think, because no one notices you more than they notice themselves. You are still important in the eyes of the people around you, but the only thing that truly matters is that YOU acknowledge your worth, and that will carry you far as the eye can see. You deserve to have confidence, my friend!
i'm the worst student in my class for over 2 years and my friend told me that when I'm not around they overwhelm him with questions like; "why is he like that?", "what is his problem?, What's wrong with him?" I asked my friend who exactly was curious about that. His answer; "Literally erveryone in class asked me already". They clearly notice

How did we come all the way to this?
Egotistical beings pretending to care about others just for the sake of ourselves. It's sad in every way.

Whenever I feel nervous before a presentation, I always say to myself that noone would remember it anyway.
This video made me realise I was unconsciously obsessing over opinions of people I do not care about and now I'm so happy
If you live your life worrying about what others think about you, you will not have a very happy or fun life.
Why should I care what other people think about me, I am who I am and who I wanna be.
If you don‘t, why bother watching videos of other people’s opinions and publishing your own thoughts in front of the public eye?

That was a wonderful, wonderful video and so true. I am 76 years of age and have always been, if anything overconfident; and yet and yet, at some deeper level I am not. It is SO important to have this type of 'put it in perspective' presentation. Very well done. Keep them coming. we humans need it.
I had once heard a quote saying:
"I am not what I think I am,
I am not what you think I am,
I am what I think you think I am".
very intuitive
We are the centre of our own universes, everyone else is too wrapped up in their own lives. I suppose it's about the need for acceptance from others which leads us to worry so much
Leona Swift yup
and how do we break free from that?
I always look for these comments...they're sooo positive! 😭
Moral of the story: don't use wax to attach your wings.
Lols!
🤣🤣
And avoid that lucky ol sun. Wonder if the boy put on sun scream? He made a big splash though...
Hmm. Your "wings" can represent pride, where Sun represents the harsh reality itself which eventually brings us down.
Well, if you do, don't fly too close to the sun, no matter how tempting...
A wolf doesn't concern itself with the opinions of sheep.
*tips fedora*
Firstly, why do you think you are a wolf and that others are sheep? We're all human so why bring up that sort of a statement?
Also don't bring up "I never said that...".
I like that quote by Tywin. However unfortunately it doesn't apply to everyone. In this case, the wolf is the ruler who rules over the common man (the sheep). If you are in the position of the sheep, then you should be concerned about the opinions of your superior. Inevitably, it is most likely that we are all sheep. Most people who watch this video are probably common workers/students who have people to answer to.
Star Guy Thing - it's more of a mindset. It doesn't work or apply to everyone.
A true wolf who is superior and more sound of mind and has more intelligence, will not allow lowlifes to bring them down is the whole point
This vid is 2 yrs. already but this was just recommended to me now which is a right timing. Stop thinking about what other's think about you because it'll eat you alive and will only cause you anxiety and depression.
