What a 15-Foot-Tall Piano Sounds Like
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 січ 2025
- Famous for daring to reimagine the piano, master piano maker David Klavins invites us to his workshop in Vác, Hungary, for a calming concert. He treats us to performances on three of his creations, including a tiny una corda piano and a massive vertical concert grand that he climbs a ladder to play because it’s 15-feet tall. While the una corda delights the ears with delicate notes, the vertical concert grand strikes a chord with deep, rich tones. And, now, for your listening pleasure, David Klavins.

I like how he started the video.
"OK come with me" no times for bullshit
These also aren’t one of a kind. He’s made at least a couple other and there are videos of them, though harder to find these days thanks to googles algorithming making the UA-cam search almost useless.
Oh man. This video would have been so much more effective if the audio was recorded in STEREO. The room acoustics play a big part in the sound of pianos, and the fact that the pianos were recorded (or at least mixed) in mono, we lose the sense of "being there."
definitely, plus the compression algorithm of youtube is quite bad in and of itself, both video and audio. i'd imagine that being there in person would have far more impact.
that being said, i loved the different sounds of his different pianos. they were beautiful
THIS
Many instruments suffer from recording syndrome and the complex of compressing.
Most of us are watching on a cellphone

Man the music is really something else and the piano just adds another level to it.
The piano is the other level, based on how tall it is

What does falling down from a 15 foot piano feels like
it feels great.
It's a very notable feeling.
@@artamutt5485 listen up here you little
Why not try it yourself?
If you fall flat, you’ll definitely feel sharp pain.
That’s the clearest and most resonant low “A” I’ve ever heard.
I KNOW RIGHTT!!! WHY DOES NOBODY SEEM TO APPRECIATE IT 🙂
2:43 when parents force you to play in front of guests and you finished playing so you can finally go to your room

that timestamp is just perfect too
Very relatable

Klavins is a very appropriate name for someone who builds pianos
It rings with Clavinova ...
Klavier
Klavierkonzert
Nominative Determinism
@@Gazdatronik yep
Klavins is Latvian, his name means "little maple tree"
This piano is available as a kontakt library by the name of "Una Corda" it sounds incredible.
and the tall piano is NI's Giant :)
stefevr | actually, The Giant is recorded from a slightly shorter piano.
I want the sound from the little one, it's so soft
Now THAT could sound like the actual piano - if you have decent speakers. (I use HR824s, ruler flat 38-21K...)
But I use Pianoteq modeled instead...
I know!! I own it and I didn't know how was the real thing.
Piano on a whole new level
Literally
“Sorry, I only play pianos taller than 12 feet.”
they sound so clear and crisp and ethereal and airy can you imagine playing one of Joe Hisaishi's (one of Studio Ghibli's famouse composers) pieces on it? it'd be like heaven on earth.
That would be amazing and beautiful
Arabesque No.1 on this would be great too for the same reason.
Hecc yea
OMGG SOMEONE TELL THAT STUDIO DO AN OST WITH THESE PIANO ASAP
David Production, here's your piano. It was made in heaven.
Playing piano is a legit skill. But goodness, making one is a whole different level. You're talking about rocket science craftsmanship.
These all sound so ethereal and echo-y
That's in part because of the style of what he's playing, but mostly because the strings are so long and the resonance so big that the silencers can't work properly, so the sound of the notes kinda melt together a bit. Really cool effect, older pianos sound a bit like this
Agree with Alex. Also, there is a lack of overtones. Just one nicely clear note. Very different. Very, very nice. Personally I like it and can see it in serious concerts. But a regular piano still beats the richness and depth. It is a new and valid musical instrument that time will determine if it will be part of the repertoire.
It's called reverb, he's playing in a large room with a high ceiling.
You can do the echo sound with the piano pedal
@@Sazuyu It's a sustain pedal, not echo.
David Klans once helped me over email to fix a baby grand piano. He’s such a great and patient guy. Sent me PDFs of schematics and everything just to help me fix it. Wonderful guy. Glad to see him being posted again :)
Both of them recorded as a VSTi program by Native Intruments under the name "The Giant" and "Una Corda". You can play them if you have Midi keyboard
And the giant too
@@BrunoNeureiter He said the same thing.
I was looking for this. I own the Una Corda version.
I got them both.
They sound really good, especially if you layer them with a traditional piano library. You can get a really good sound that way.
This is the piano that can play the highest key
Fingering Things ✔️ I see u on literally every video
Same
what on earth is your name bro
since it's so tall, and lower strings are longer, i'd say the lowest note ;)
Honestly if we both did a collab, I think our usernames have an odd synergy that would work
He has the highground during the play
Rob Scallon wants to know this guy's location
I feel like Rob Scallon would do a much better job. Not much substance in this video. An explanation of why pianos look the way they do and how and why these differ would've been great.
@@Tedd755 I second this! Someone send him this video!
nya rob scallon wants to sleep over this guys house. Same bed
Bet it would sound even better in a theatre where the setting is built for audio.
that big one I think is now in a concert hall in Ventspils, Latvia
Or in a room made entirely of wood.
99% of the world:
"How much is a foot again?"
Its the size of a fairly large sandwich
Abt 30cm
MetraMan09 There you go wrong. The historical origin of the foot measurement comes from a foot indeed. But today it’s not literally the size of your foot. Otherwise all buildings in the USA would be crooked if every construction worker used his foot to measure. It’s 30,48 cm according to Google.
His pianos sound so special and he can play very well!
This is the first low A I’ve ever heard that actually sounds like an A.
What a 15 foot tall piano coming out of tiny speakers sounds like.
😄
Reference class headphones or speakers are your best friend in this situation.
This is a beautiful piano with beautiful music pieces.
Una Corda is one of my favorite sample libraries! So nice ♥
Great piano! Finally, I hear not dry, but deep, velvety, nuanced sound. Klavins Piano is without a doubt the best piano I have ever heard.
I just like his library where the small one is 😊
Ah, damn those bass notes on the large model is incredibly satisfying.
imagine playing debussy, satie, or ravel on this piano 😍
I was hoping to hear Claire de Lune.
No
Yassssss
I prefer chopin, but hearing reverie or clair de lune on those pianos would still make my day
Mmm bussy
He won piano competitions because he has the high ground
That resonance in those deep notes!!! BEAUTIFUL
it like,,,sound from heaven
It was made in heaven.
@@sabunkompas Is that a JoJo reference?!
He is Latvian? I'm proud!
I know its supposed to be about the large piano, but the Small piano stole my heart and I want one of those. The softness and delicate way he played makes that my favorite beacuse it sounds like magic
They are around 18k msrp, but but you can buy one if you want on their website

@@mdccloud or you can just get a virtual instrument version of it from native instruments for less than 100 bucks
@@bg357wg yeah, I purchased it and it doesn’t sound as good as I was hoping for. I’m sure it sounds wonderful in person but coming through my daw it sounds mediocre.
The vertical construcion is genious. Due to this construction the cords have a much more lifely vibrato and swing better.
The first two pianos have an almost flute-like sound. Delicate and pure. BUT unlike the Alexander Piano - you use wrapped strings in the bass. He sought to learn what the sound of open strings would be like and it is fantastic. More like a standard piano, true, but incredible bass that stands out regardless of what you are playing. But that upright of your is amazing as well. It does have a beautiful sound to it and the bass is rich as well.
It being strait strung is a major point that should be talked about since most people today don't know how much more beautiful and clear it makes a piano sound.
The modern piano has almost no diversity and people give up clarity and a magical sound for an instrument that's as loud and full as possible when the modern piano has too wide of a dynamic range and the most expensive kind of piano is the only one made.
The piano I have is strait strung, has 77 keys and 2 strings per note so it sounds like no piano you can get today. I gave up piano until I found this one so I'm glad to see someone bringing back these kinds of instruments in a form that isn't the most expensive even if they're not beautiful but people who buy theses can always make a nice cabinet for it if they want.
The highest quality of Sound and Piano....
I have the honor to know the David.. He is amazing talent and personality from another World! No wonder His pianos are beyond excellence.
I'm happy that David did this. It will likely stimulate other people to try new things. Some will be improvements and some will be merely novelties but it needs to be done.
These sound magical. Oh id kill to hear a live performance with any of these! I really liked the softness of the middle one :3. But the crispness of the last one is just ethereal
You can play these at home right now! Una Corda and that giant piano has been sampled years ago and they are amazing to play. Check out Native Instruments "Una Corda" and "The Giant".
The low D and A hit like a train...absolutely marvelous
I am.... speechless., I mean how can anyone not enjoy these masterful pieces of art. The music that they produce are just so..... Undescribable.
This is why strait strung pianos should have stayed around. You can't get such a wonderful clear sound from a modern piano.
I could listen to him play all day.
The sound is so different. I love them.
omg! i love your amazing videos! keep on making them!
The bass, if only he played the tall one some more! That sounded INCREDIBLE!
That low-A at 3:34 is AMAZING!!!
Too bad Elton John did not have one of these when he was in his tall shoe phase back in the 70s, he could have played it just standing on the floor.
😉
I wish someone could go there and play "To Zanarkand".....these pianos have the perfect sound for this piece.
This is "The giant" from native instruments but irl
Excellent. Crisp notes
The una corda is underrated in this comments section!🔥
Damn straight. It's almost harplike
There is a sampled VST of the Una Corda out there if you want to play it.
PIANO OVER HEAVEN ゴゴゴゴ
Every year or so I see a video about this guy. He must be quite fascinating.
Listening to this on my laptop speakers, so I can really understand what it sounds like.
Sweet and powerful sound!
This video doesn’t do justice. I want to hear it in person.
Wonderful video. David Klavins is unbelievable in his field!
What a perfect last name for someone who makes pianos.
The first piano - JUST WOW!!!! Beyond words, especially the higher octaves... Feels like it resonates with the soul. Makes sense, but would have never thought that a single string piano could sound so amazing!!!
Second piano - Beautiful mellow tone, strangely sounds a lot like harp
Third - Well... nothing special, other than its size
I love the softer tone pianos, imagine them with tons of reverb! So beautiful :)
I really like the steady rests for the string winding lathe. Never seen that before. But I have never seen strings that long being wound.
Even with the professional studio earphones you cannot hear the base it probably produces, it sounds like a very bright piano thats all
It's strait strung so it does not produce the same amount of bass as an overstrung piano and has a much narrower dynamic range which gives it the benefit of sounding extremely clear, balanced and suits styles of music the modern piano ruins.
Sometimes I run my guitar amps into larger or multiple speaker cabinets for a fuller sound. This guy gets it.
Pipe organs: AM I A JOKE TO YOU
They're not pianos. Pianos are string instruments, pipe organs are wind instruments.
I understand it is joke and where it's coming from, but pipe organs really have no need to be offended by these pianos.
@@dirkhoekstra727 I wasn't joking. Pipe organs are literally infinitely better than pianos.
@@marekfoolforchrist i am also an organ admirer but it is senseless to say one instrument is better than the other, especially if they belong to different group.
it is only your own preferrence.
the moment you generalize your personal favorite to universal standard, it evokes a heated reponse from others who are different from you. the fact that you like one instrument is perfectly good but the style you stated it has potential of conflict...
What a great story! Really enjoyed every tune ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m picturing the concert grand on stage for a concerto and the pianist watching the conductor through a telescope.
Next he will turn a whole theatre stage into a piano making the entire theatre it’s soundbox.
Omg, that was beautiful!!
Amazing pianos
These pianos look industrial, but they sound beautiful, and he's pretty good at at playing them too.
The Una Corda is beautiful, bright yet buttery, smooth yet splashy. I love it! :)
They're all amazing, PERFECT FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING!!! 💓
The sound is incredible !!!!!
Despite all the jokes and laughter they do sound pretty majestical
By making it thst big, you get rid of the inharmonisity allowing for the base to become pure notes. this guy managed to create a piano with no compromises.
Ahhhh music to my ears
What a unique and beautiful sound!
1:56 that book room is awesome
I love your channel!! Great work!
It sounds a little more like harp. Does anyone notice?
One string per note. No resonance enhancement.
Absolutely

These are truly wonderful instruments!!! The tone is magical. You need to get Valentina Lisitsa to play them to promote them for you.
such rich timbre. amazing ;__;
Beautiful.
Why we ALL can't express ourselves musically IS blasphemous.
Love this.
WHAT PIECE IS HE PLAYING IT IS BEAUTIFUL!
Great intro and thank you. A little tip from a pianist - would be much better to hear David's playing in sync with the video.
That big one has the most distinguishable pitch in the bass notes of any piano ive ever heard. I guess thats to do with how long they are!
Perfect for Bach I think
Sounds Heavenly! 💖
