  • I am lucky enough to have lots of bikes, tools and MTB kit however it was all just dumped in my empty, unorganised garage. I decided to create the dream garage setup focusing on security, storage & organisation.
In episode 1 the garage took a huge transformation from an unorganised dumping ground to a dream workshop/bike cave and in episode 2 we only continue to add awesome features but also update you with the progress as it has been a while since we. last filmed in here!
I hope that you enjoy the video! :)

Hey Tom Cardy! 17 years of carpentry makes me well drool over your screw drawer! Hang bikes on the side wall left of garage door alternating front wheel up rear wheel up to save space! Wheel rack up high on opposite wall with two parallel bars below the wheels holding them! Those rails can also hold bins or boxes! A few main bikes can occupy the floor below! Ride ride ride!

Get a roller door then you can store the bikes upright either side of the garage with a walkway down the middle. Also roller doors offer added security to the garage. Best investment I made fitting one on my garage. All the best on your road to recovery!

Use an old large wheel, fabricate a box for it to connect to and screw the box onto the ceiling. Get a load of butchers hooks and have a rotating bike rack. (Think upside down spinning clothes line).
That way you spin the bikes round to the one you want to use today.

To maximise your bike storage you would ideally need to change your garage door from an up and over to a roller or the more old fashioned hinged double door arrangement that would allow even more usable space on the walls to wall mount your bikes. I am planing to replace my up and over doors with the more traditional double doors as I often hit my head on the bloody thing and and the extra room would mean that I can bring storage forward to the doors. They are possibly less secure that a roller door.

Didn't see a truing stand in there - no workshop is complete without a TS2.2! Plus the adaptors for thru axles, some spoke wrenches & a dishing guage. Wall mounted repair stand would also be nice. Rubber mats for the floor. As you mentioned, foam cut-outs for the tool drawers but I heard its extremely time consuming making them (mine just have a thin layer of 'grippy' foam at the bottom to help stop things from sliding about). I'd consider painting the walls white to reflect the light or you may need to add some portable lamps for detail work, which will take up valuable space & may cause shadows in the workspace . Also very important - some craft beers in the fridge!

Change the door Tom, go for a roller garage door. It will keep the garage warmer and dryer, be more secure and also gives you a lot more room to work with. Given the bikes you have to store this would be helpful. Recently been working on my garage and changing the door combined with Borgen Bike Wall pedal Mounts has made such a difference. I shopped around and they’re not as expensive as you think if you do your homework. Happy to recommend if you like.
Also LED work lighting under the cupboard above the work station makes a big difference. I got mine from IKEA.

"If I was given six hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first four sharpening the axe." Abraham Lincoln
I think a good overall plan of what goes where, on paper. Definitely lay everything out where you want it before thinking about making those high density foam cut outs to keep your tools in place. Spanners stencilled and hung up on the wall are a MUST for any dream garage, even if only for the aesthetic. A whiteboard somewhere for ideas, some cool framed pictures on the walls, extra security, a sound system. So many possibilities.

One solution I have been using for bike storage is the feedback sports VELO HINGE. They actually swing in and out so your bikes aren’t sticking off the wall 30+” as well, which with a narrow pathway is helpful. Furthermore, I use the feedback sports VELO POST to hang rims, or any other bits and bobs. They are super multifunctional, sturdy, and work great! Anyway, as a fellow perfectionist, I look forward to see what you come up with in the future and best of luck in your recovery! Cheers

I like those screw in wheel hooks. Hang the bike vertically off one hook on the wall. If your ceiling is high enough, you can hang alternate bikes high and low so the handlebars bypass and you can squeeze more bikes into a section of wall. Looks like a brick wall so maybe 2x4 cleats one for the high hooks and one fir the low hooks.

Coming along nicely there buddy. It’s nice to have a tidy workshop. I’ve spent the last 7 years trying to manage a single car garage with a car in it and a functioning workshop space. It’s tough. I like the look of the grey on the walls, but I prefer white as it brightens the space up a lot. I used washed down Leyland trade emulsion for that. Obviously if you can insulate the walls it’s ideal, but it’s hassle and money.
Might be worth looking into a drywall electrical back box to house your bench mounted electrical socket and using a conventional socket. Another thing which I think you could benefit from is some under cabinet led strip lights. You can buy them on a roll with a self adhesive backer and a 12v transformer. Handy when you’re working at the bench.
Maybe a small home made bench next to the fancy tool box setup to fit a vice, as I don’t see one and no workshop is complete without one. I made a sturdy bench using 100x50 timber from TP and 12mm MDF for the top and shelf. Fix to the wall with angle brackets. I’ve finally got around to ordering a 1.5mm aluminium skin for it so I can tack bits together on it with my tig welder if needed. A small pillar drill on it too would be dreams.
Garage floor paint. I’ve just redone mine using Leyland frigate grey from screw fix. Two coats has come up well. I went with a light grey as it’s easier to find things if the floor is a light colour, should you drop a nut or bolt etc. A rubber Matt by the bench is good to save your feet the pain of concrete also. Otherwise it’s just about maximising your floor space and hanging up everything possible. Hang your bikes by the front or back wheel, hang your spare wheels up on hooks and fit shelves wherever possible.
Another cheap way to insulate your garage door is using laminate floor underlay. I had a load of aluminium backed stuff spare after doing our lounge which I used to do my garage door. It’s not suddenly perfect, but it helps keep the cold down during winter.

Great to see that you’re doing good. A vice on the workbench is a must have. I’d mov the air hose roll up to the side of the workbench in front of the shelf, reaching through the shelf, if you have more stuff in, does not work so well. What about rails on the ceiling to hang and move the bikes might be good. Then you still have room to walk around.

I would use swinging hangers for the bikes along the wall opposite the work bench. hang the bikes from the back wheel or front wheel and alternate so the bars don't interfere. If they swing, you can put the hooks closer together and move the other bikes out of the way easily without taking more than one down at a time.
