A bungee cord or adjustable strap might be useful to improve your idea. To create a slightly different angle move to the edge of the chair. A spike is another option. I am a little bigger and moving my leg up and down in conjunction with moving to the edge of the chair and moving my leg left and right really swings the center of gravity of the bassoon around and I am able to take both hands off the bassoon with the reed comfortably in my mouth. Using a guitar foot stand can help with this. This is the age old problem of bassoonists getting carpel tunnel. Once you take all the pressure off your hand problem solved. I know one bassoonist that simply puts their foot on their case. You can eliminate any pressure while playing contra by using a Hamilton bass stand and Velcro® to hold it in place. Then you can pick the whole thing up for faster and safer changes. I double and all my large instruments except bassoon are played on stands. Bass and Contralto clarinet. Baritone and bass sax. Contrabassoon.

Yes! My teacher in London used a spike. I prefer something that isn’t stretchy but a bungee would work great too. I actually use a Dutch crutch myself, but most students in my target audience probably won’t have that. Thanks for your comment! ☺️
