Thanks Morten for the strain on my brain this morning, that's just what i needed. My bad advice is just buy a Mac and be done with the configuration mess *(lol)*
Hey morten håber du kan hjælpe mig, leder efter sådan en Rack konsole. Du har men ved ikke hvad det rigtige navn er jeg skal søge på dba på dansk.. kan finde en masse på ebay? nogle forslag?
HI Qua7100 My channel is English, and to make sure as many as possible, can also enjoy the comments, they are also English. Please keep to English. Thank you for watching! :-)
If they were just in single disk configurations then just mounting them as a single virtual disk in the controler should bring them back online and keep all the data. No need for raid configuration (and probably the reason none was found) if the drives were not running in raid in the first place.
@@MyPlayHouse Yup, that would have loaded the data on the disk without issue, I have done the exact same thing moving from single disks handled by the IBM ServeRAID M5015 in my X3650 m3 to another Dell Raid controller. When the IBM ServeRAID M5015 has a single disk in a 'raid' it just passes the disk through almost like a HBA.
Thank you for the video. Funny I have tried to install esxi on an ssd, and after it was successful , rebooting did not recognize the SSD at all. With IBM I prefer SAS drives always.
An alternative solution is to do an image backup of Windows Server to a network drive and use this to recover the operating system to a spare drive on the destination server - may take an hour or so but it will bypass the compatability issues with the raid controlers.
WHY cant you just update the firmware on the card and the DAS using a Virtual machine running on the server as long as the hardware is passed through to the operating system you should be able to flash the firmware.
Got a few questions for you Morten, I'm thinking of getting a second backplane that will get me 16bays on my x3650 m3 server and I was told by Lenovo that 59Y3825 this part number would be all I need to get 16 drives on the server. the person also mentioned that my current RAID controller m5015 can tackle 32 discs connected to it. But i dont know if the RAID controller can give me the 6gbit speeds that SAS 2.0 and SATA 3.0 gives me. So I was thinking of getting a second m5015 RAID card with the second backplane. You think that would be something give me the 6gbit speeds per drive?
Hi anders gjerløw Yes one M5015 will do the job, together with the sas expander that comes with the 59Y3825... I did a video on this : ua-cam.com/video/ueu4X4V-wW4/v-deo.html Thank you for watching! :-)
After doing a google search it looks like the HP online ROM flash component is available for Linux (RHEL based) and ESXi. But I don't think that helps you much in this case. Might work from a CentOS Live CD though. Can you not just do the firmware flash with one of the M3 servers?
Hi Iam DH4 Thank You very much! as I could gathere,, you need a HP raid card to firmware update the DAS SAS expanders in the controllers in the DAS,, the only one I have is that P441 card,, I have only seen it work in the M5 Thank you for watching! :-)
After watching all of it now, do you not think that Server 2016 is locked to hardware like Windows 10 license? I know you are running the evaluation versions but maybe they lock in to hardware too??
Hi Tim Box Sorry,, This has nothing to do with Windows,, this has to do with the raid controller not being able to import the configuration from the previous controllers,, the OS on the drive is irrelevant,, Linux would be the same. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi David Johnson It's the raid controller in the x3650 M2 that does not support >2TB,, If it get the M5015 from the M3 it does. Thank you for watching! :-)
The "not quite the same" drive sled problem is one of the main reasons i disliked IBM servers in our datacenters. With HP, i could use any disk in any server across many years and i only needed 3 different types (3.5" SCSI, 2.5" SAS for G5 - G8 and 2.5" SAS for G9+) vs IBM who seemed to have a new sled for every single server model. Sometimes, IBM couldn't even figure out what model we needed and sent us the wrong ones multiple times.
Hi Jesper Monsted Thank You very much! But I am pretty sure HP has about the same number of sleds,,, in the DL380,, but can you create an array of drives on the DL380 G5 and import that in the G9,,, that is really what I was trying. Thank you for watching! :-)
@@MyPlayHouse I only ever saw two different 2.5" sleds on the thousand or so HP servers i installed, but i think there were at least five on just a few generations of IBM x86 servers.
Are you using SSD which are validated by Lenovo to work? Most consumer drives won't work in server equipment. Also are you using SED or FIPS SSDs in your Lenovo server?
Hi Jas B. Well the two 300GB SAS drives are Lenovo,, the 3 * 4TB's are drives I took out of USB boxed just a few videos ago,, I have never run in to this before. Thank you for watching! :-)
Good day Morten , Thanks a lot for your videos& effort . Could you assist me , as i should add 4*600 disks into a x3650 M5 , There are already 4*600 disks configured RAID 1 and the system is running , Could you guide me with the steps in order to do so ?
Hi Ahmed Maged Thank You very much! No I better not,, as I have not tried this myself,, but it's a great challenges you have there. Thank you for watching! :-)
@@MyPlayHouse Hi Morten , could you please send to me the lenovo x3650 m5 installation guide via mail as i have searched many time but could not find it ahmed.hamadaoox@gmail.com Thanks in advance , have a nice day .
TIP : If you need windows to firmware update something, use a USB stick with "Windows repair disk" on it, put the firmware exe with it. Boot from it, and go to shell (CMD). Now you can execute the firmware update witout installing windows.
If the SSD disk firmware has been set to 6Gbps « only »(not 6 and fallback to 3 compatible), you will not be able to run the disk on a 3Gbps Raid card only. Is you’re backplane ready for 6Gbps on that model? Also stop saying the word « Series ».. it starts Siri on my phone automatically lol
You don't need to remove drives in order to boot to Windows. Take a USB drive and use Windows ToGo: www.techspot.com/article/1751-windows-to-go/ and then on the boot menu, select it to boot from.
you might look into making a "windows on the go" usb stick for easy firmware updates...just boot from usb, update firmware and presto no musical hdd's... also you said you need a hp subscription for firmwares???!?! is is a paid subscription.... if so that seems anti consumer....
Clear config on this windows ssd and create new. Important!!! DO NOT initialize it!!! and try to boot then from it. You can also clear config and put controller into HBA mode without any raid and then try to boot from it. On DELL system's it is working that way if You want to preserve data. RAID controller is reserving some bits or sectors for himself to store config so clearing config should not do any harm to data. You can check that the size of disk is smaller after doing RAID - you lose few MB Good luck!
Hi Imba Core Thank You very much! Well I will manage,, and be able to reinstall,, but this would be important if I was moving from a x3650 M4 to a x3650 M5 and wanted to move over a R5 or R6,, Knowing this would save us form that embarrassing experiences :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

Why not going into megaraid utility to see from there?

Hi Kenneth Mason
Thank You very much! but without importing this configuration,, no drive is presented to the OS.
