I love this era of wild nothing ☺️
I actually like this. I think we sometimes have this idealized view of the 80s and that era, but we forget it was the peak of suburbanization, huge highways, parking lots, no real towns or cities, no community, these fake wooden houses being massively built, just a neighborhood to live in and then commute endlessly to work in a big city and go shopping after that. As he says in the song, we promise to fix all your solutions, with sales, products, consumer goods, no more babies crying. We forget those are things that really involve living. Not all the products, but actually finding a life that you feel satisfied in, a career you enjoy, a community to work in, a family that you see grow up and teach them.

This song really makes me wonder if we still idealize the suburban life. At 30 I still feel so far away from what he’s talking about, and it always feels like it’s in the back of my mind. Hard to put into words. I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing!

Wonderful Wild Nothing album, (probably their best so far), to be sure, with "Hold" in 2023. First song "Headlights On" is really hoppin', and ready for the dancefloor too. The whole album is really great and easy to listen to and have fun with as well. Another great song comes up midway with "Suburban Solutions" I groove to no doubt. There really isn't a bad song to be had on "Hold". I used to listen the Wild Nothing in my summers in Europe in the recent past with my cousins in Denmark and England. They really liked Wild Nothing also over there, and often enough was on their local radio too. Closing out the album "Pulling Down the Moon (Before You)" swept me away as a perfect ending, for a perfect album IMHO. Cheers and pax, Murf

Is this Song of the Year so far? I think it might be. I love Wild Nothing, and this track takes their song writing to another level. Such a unique combination of subtext and melodic emotion. I feel like I'm walking into the apocalypse with a smile on my face. Brilliant song and exploration of ourselves.

Yeah, I hear a bit of them on this. However, the Prefab Sprout vibes are strongest on "Wheel of Misfortune" from his last album, _Indigo._ He even admitted that track was specifically meant to emulate their sound.

@@gp-nn7zy Agreed on both counts. This has been a fantastic year for music overall. New albums from GUM, Alan Palomo/Neon Indian, Molly Burch (produced by Jack), Nicholas Allbrook, Beach Fossils, Tennis, etc., all of which have been great, and based on what we've heard from it so far, I'm very confident that _Hold_ will turn out to be one of Jack's best albums yet.

There's also music being made by other modern artists that is heavily influenced by stuff from the '60s, '70s, and '90s. I've got a feeling these last six decades of music are gonna live on for quite some time, simply because there is a literal ton of incredible music that's been made, a variety of ways to hear it, and there are many ways in which you can utilize some of the sounds that were popular in those decades to make something similar yet still unique.

"Foyer" was how 2020 was started right, even when it didn't go right. Huge fan. 😎
This song makes me feel strange; a sudden change from feeling comfortable to tremendous distress in 3:43 minutes. On the one hand, in the beginning, it makes you feel happy with the tones, and your brain says, let's enjoy good music while you are working on the computer. But then, when you listen to it carefully and watch the video; you start with the thought, yes, the suburban solution has my back; it is what I am looking for: security of having a house, family, stable job, economic stability, and some extra amenities; and after that statement, it begins to become more a profound question, is this what I'm looking for? Have that at the cost of possible monotony, worrying only about my comfort rather than being more thoughtful and active in environmental, social, and other problems? What am I doing to at least be less toxic for our world? I know we are insignificant to the universe, but there is still something inside telling us that we could do more, although that could cause losing our comfort.
It is true that other songs also make you reach the same issue but with the premise of feeling somewhat depressed from the beginning (like time or mone from Pink Floyd), but with this song, it is something more like a sudden slap in the face.
