Hey I know Muscat well, and there are so many places to explore in the city itself other than corniche. There are beautiful areas like Al Shaati Qurum, Al Mouj Forts, Museums, beautiful malls and beaches. I agree that public transport isn't that great for tourism purpose. You need to know someone who knows city very nicely, and can explore only through car.

Having lived in Oman for approx. 10 yrs, I can relate to what you have experienced. Do haggle with the taxi drivers.
BTW, all the taxi drivers in Oman are Omani's coz. they outnumber the expats & they need the jobs. Also most important - at least half of these taxi drivers are undercover cops (ROP or Omani intelligence). I have encountered some of them, who start a conversation by making bad comments about Oman, etc. & wait for your reaction. Just be vigilant! and do as though you don't know & keep quiet. Coz. the moment you say any thing offensive against Oman, they don't take it lightly & they can contact the local police & have you arrested. The ME is not Europe or N America, just be cautious, esp. when that Omani taxi driver questioned you about your camera.

Hello. My younger brother is staying in Muscat for 4 years now. He asked me to visit him and when he came in February, I went with him. Stayed with him till 1st May had to come back because of problem in home. Beautiful country. In fact in the starting of video, where you started, just to your back,there is a turning on the right, and 100 meters from there, my brother's apartment is there. That area Al ghoubra, I had covered most part of it and also to near by places like Al Khuwair,Oman Avenues Mall, Muscat Grand Mall, Lulu Hypermarket,Makkah super market etc. The traffic square you crossed for Taxi, went there many times to go to Lulu Mall which is on the other side, to your left. Also visited some distance places like Ruwi(2-3 times),Wadi Kabir, Matra souq, Al Alam palace,National Museum(Night time),Al jalili fort, Qurum beach,Waterfront,Farzi Cafe,Ghubrah beach,Bandar Al khairan(to watch dolphins)Al Mouj(my favourite spot) and city center. I watched Batman,KGF 2,Uncharted in Oman cinema halls. and also Lord Shiva(The temple is believed to have been built 109-125 years ago by the Gujarati merchant community in Oman. The Bhatia merchant community from Kutch first settled in Muscat in 1507)and krishna temples. More distant places like Alila,anantara,diana view point in Jebel akhdar. Although Me and my brother travelled mostly by Bus,Otaxi and shared Taxi, his colleague had a car. So, me,my brother,his colleague,his wife travelled to distance places and nearby places in Car. Also to Jebel Akhdar and dolphins, one of their friends came along. Good company. Can never forget the terrifying car drive on new route in jebel shams,snake canyon, where 17 kilometre took 4 hours and just on top, the car stopped. My heart stopped beating. Overjoyed when we saw the black top road coming from other side. Mountain cut to make road,2 cars can only pass. people living in the mountains. Just dust,dirt,stone such an adventure although many tourists came there for trekking. Me,my brother,his colleague and his wife also went to Egypt, getting Egypt visa from the Embassy in Oman but mine was stuck because I was on visit visa, they had resident cards. 4 days to Journey, when We went to Embassy, even their visa 7 days time. But my brother somehow found a way to apply online and my visa came in 2 days, theirs also in same day morning. Otherwise all plans flopped. Renewed my Oman visa for just 2 days. After Egypt, also went to Dubai, me and my brother by flight to Abu Dhabi and then by bus to Dubai, his colleague,his wife and his friend who could not come to Egypt,they went by car. Then We came back from Dubai to India by catching a flight from Sharjah, they went back to Oman by car.

Its not like there is nothing to do in Muscat, There are a lot of things. Beaches, old souq in matrah, matrah corniche, museums, and so many more. Public transport is not that great yes, but a local tourist guide will be of a huge help. Been living for 13 years, best place, very peaceful too.
If Oman tourist visa is required for Indians for 4-5 days trip?
