- WE NEVER FORGET THAT DAY! a little village by the small bay named Ryoishi was hit by tsunami. it started looking like a big ebb but people knows whats coming next. the president of the neighborhood association screams " evacuate right now!"
The filmer is Mr. Hajime Seto who was a president of a neighborhood association of this area.

The Tsunami wall in this video would be helpful under "normal" circumstances, but not for such a cataclysmic event, such as that day. At least they have high ground within close proximity, along the Japanese coast. Where I live on the Oregon coast, the closest hills are a half mile away.

Watching this video was terrifying! At first you can see the waves coming in the distance and then a wall of water just keeps coming and coming. For anyone, a TSUNAMI is deadly and not to be underestimated. What a shock to see what happened to Japan and all those villages and towns that were wiped out in minutes. Fortunate for those who got to higher ground and were saved. I would never want to experience this. It has been 10 years since the event and I can only hope that people were able to rebuild and get back to their lives. My heart goes out to all who were lost. Great respect for the Japanese people and their resolve. God Bless.
Thank you for your kindess.12 years have passed since then. Although there's a long way to go, people of the affected areas are doing best to rebuild their town, and it has so progressed. We Japanese thanks for the support and kindness form people all over the world since then!

I really get the impression that sea walls are not the answer here. I heard about one town in the tsunami zone that chose to relocate to a higher level rather than build a higher sea wall. Whatever the answer, I hope we never have to see scenes of devastation like this ever again. It’s heartbreaking to see whole towns like this wiped off the map in minutes, even now, ten years on. Prayers for all the survivors still recovering from this terrible tragedy 🙏
the amount of coming water just too much for any sea wall, its like bathtub need some kind of drain

Yes, it really is very helpful to us when good people like this risk their lives so we can know what happened and HOW it happened. These video's are more helpful than people think. I remember growing up and hearing about tsunami's (called tidal waves where I lived), but we never SAW video of them until later on when technology permitted it.
One question though, how did we "mess with mother nature"? You implied human did something to cause this particular event. Just wondering what it was???
My heart and prayers go out to anyone hurt by this horrible tragedy.
As if the first wave wasn't bad enough, there's a second one just after. Just total crazy.
almost 3pm to 5pm, several times. 2nd one was bigger than 1st.
The 2nd wave helped pushed the big creecher thru the wall scary whatever it was.and how was it able to call the sea to help it? Weird hu?
The 2nd one over rode the 1st one which hadn't receded fast enough, making the 2nd wave larger.
Anyone tell me what the message is saying??
I've been watching a lot of clips from this tsunami recently. This town had the best tsunami defenses I've seen yet, and even those were woefully inadequate sadly. It gives me some perspective of how powerful this tsunami was. It rose over those high walls in a matter of a minute. Crazy.
Well the first problem is that they didn't build a seawall, they built a concrete wall around the beach and a marina on the other side. Seawalls are built in the water for a reason.
Looks like you guys might have to build the wall a little higher
L
Sadly it wouldn't matter how high the wall was... you can't hold back a large volume of water with a wall. When it hits a wall it just rises higher and higher until it either breaks the wall or over-tops it.
I imagine just waiting for the water to come in, after the water drained away.
The Japanese are great people who have suffered so much from this tragedy.
We had a small earthquake today where I am in Poplar Bluff, MO, & my fear made me consider this event again.

the crazy part is its not a huge wave, its like a ripple but endless amount of water pushing in. wow the way it filled that bay
want to see how crazy big the wave is?
It is a huge wave actually. In some places in Japan it was over 100 feet tall. I believe the tsunami walls here were 50 or 60 feet tall. Also, here we see the wave did not break because this was a deep harbor. There are other videos where the wave does break and you can better gauge the height and power of the wave. Also, the wave has a very long wavelength so it takes a long time for the crest to fully come ashore.
There's certainly no shortage of horrific footage of this tsunami. But this one truly reveals the scale and sheer height of water rushing in. The seawall appears to be at least 35+ feet high easily dwarfing the cars, ships and buildings around it. It's hard to imagine the surrounding ocean ever reaching such a height. Yet, in mere seconds the water swells and overtakes the wall easily.
The height is exaggerated here due to the shape of the land and even the wall itself.
In narrow inlets and bays the water gets pushed higher (and faster) than in more open areas.
God Bless all those people affected by this event.

7:32 really puts it in perspective, the water on the other side of the barrier, being the same level on the other side! scary stuff! Then 8:50 the second wave! even more scary!. so many people dead. So sad.
that was actually the 3rd wave. not the 2nd
Have seen this vid several times and am curious how tall that concrete barrier was? Estimating roughly 20 feet?

The shape of the coast and the wall itself are what caused the higher than normal surge here and in some other places.
