I'm a flautist studying music at university. This was one the first piece I played with an orchestra I used to be a member of and miss very music.
The finesse of the wind section in particular here blows my mind! There's a section where you can see two flutes playing the tune in octave unison but you can hardly hear it. Not only are the pair in tune pitch-wise but are so perfectly connected with regard to vibrato and style that they blend seamlessly. I have NEVER seen anything like it from a pair of flutes. Impressive!
Of course, the rest of the orchestra was exquisite too. Subscribed!

Most people equate this composition with an elegy for some specific a princess who has died. However, Ravel never intended this as such. In Ravel's own words, this composition is "An evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court" This composition was thus intended to be an evocation of a time and place as much as an imaginary princess.

It always gets to me a bit how people think this is such a sad piece of music, and call it funereal. I don't think it is! The title would be better translated, I think, by "Pavane for a Princess from a Far-Away Time." The music is indeed reflective and gentle, but it seems to me that it doesn't deal with someone who has died. It is simply about a girl who is living in the surroundings of a royal household, quietly living her daily life. I think it has much more the character of simple nostalgia than some sort of tragedy.

  • @GerardBeaubrun

An elegy of dreamlike proportions, a testament to the awe that seizes the soul when the eye gaze at the infinite and the ears are caressed with untold secrets. Pavane for a Dead Princess resonates with the calmness of the graves and cradles us with melancholic lullabies from the past.
At 1:10, the moods shifts and hints to danger. The chords from icy become warm and as the remote string take over that same ominous theme become a sad lament. What has been lost? A young star shining so bright, a princess whose laughter gave birth to each dawn and whose yawns allowed the moon to smile at the rest of us.
More amazing, is the moment of wonder, that envelopes us in fleeting seconds of fantasy. Doesn't the part starting 3:40 invite us to close our eyes and invite ourselves to drown ourselves in joy and foolishness. The rolling string with that angelic harp as a beacon of impressionism symbolize the state of reckless abandon joy can let us slide in. Alas memories often can do that.
This piece stands as one Ravel's gift to Humanity. Thank you for giving a theme to our dreams, a diary for a our lines of wonderment and a golden mirror to acknowledge the hold of the past on the present.

So beautiful. There's this oboist at my middle school who played this piece (of course, it was only a two minute long rendition of this, & I only saw the sheet music for it about once or twice, making it hard for me to remember the name of the piece). As mentioned, it was a lot shorter than this, but I remember hearing it being played by her & the piano accompaniment in the hallway whenever it was time for her to play. I'm glad I found this.

Virtuoso senza virtuosimi eppure struggente, quanta grazia!

For what I believe is the first time, I cried on stage tonight.
It was at intermission at tonight's Tacoma Symphony concert, that I was
scrolling my feed and saw that a good friend had finally lost his
beloved dog Mingus, who was a truly beautiful animal, but suffering. I
left a comment telling him I was in the middle of a performance, and
that I'd dedicate the rest of my time on stage, and my humble role in
the music, to him and his furry canine.
The final work on the program was Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess. Need I say more??????

Ravel intended it THAT slow! You are spot on, and sleep well. So relaxing and beautiful...

PAVANE FOR A DEAD PRINCESS by Maurice Ravel,
    song lyrics by Joel Sattler
    This
is a pavane for dead princesses:
    for
the memory of a little girl at play
on a bright and sunny day
    just yesterday
    Somewhere
    someone is being born
    somewhere
    somebody has to die
Why did it have to be you?
    Somewhere a sun is shining
Somewhere a star is passing by
    Somewhere someone is crying
    Somewhere is blue sky
    You were
    so like an angel
    we were
so blessed to have you near
    if only for a moment,
    our heaven was here
    and then
    and then you were gone
    **********************
    This
is just a song of remembrances
    for
    the loss of innocence
    of the broken promises
    and the end of light
    when comes the night
    The world
was full of joy and laughter
    and your love
    was in the air
Why did it have to end?
    Remember springtime
    when the earth was new
and when you were so full of life
    and winter far
    away
    Remember summer
    and the smell of bread
when you wore a crown on your head
    of poppies red
    you said
    we all
    should come
    with you too
    But with the autumn
    everything was changed
you were up to us to protect
    but none expect
    the rain
    Then there was winter
    and the falling snow
when the trees were all in disguise
    and wonder filled your eyes
    the world
    covered up with ice
    *****************
    This
was a pavane for dead princesses
just a melody meant to bring back to our lives
    all the feelings deep inside
    we had for you
    Somewhere
    someone is being born
    somewhere
    somebody has to die
Why did it have to be you?
