This piece (along with a few others by Saint-Saëns) evokes ancient Egypt with awe-inspiring power. The splendour, extravagance, mystery, exoticism, and near-unparalleled age of one of the greatest civilisations in the history of our species are all brought before the listener with unparalleled vividness. Listening, I seem to see the Pharaohs on their thrones, the priests performing their rituals, the majestic Nile lying a giant snake across the land, the cryptic wisdom of the Great Sphinx, and the towering awe of the Pyramids. The ending sends all these and more scenes into a frenzy, until the real world falls away, and I am cast into the world of ancient Egypt - the mystery and awe of it all. In evoking all this, "Samson and Delilah" is the musical equivalent of Rider Haggard's masterpieces in literature. Both are great achievements. I suggest combining them - perhaps listening to this while reading "She".

I've been listening to this piece since I was a young child. I'm now 68 and haven't heard a finer performance, taut and glittering with every thread brought out to perfection. I've always wondered how Saint-Saëns, an elegantly refined Frenchman, could have crafted so lushly Middle Eastern a work and in the midst of an opera which by and large is anything but that.
probably because he had tuberculosis and needed a warmer climate in winter than in Paris. He therefore spent a long time in Algeria which was French and probably being inspired by his trips in such place
The Bacchanal ends with Samson, pushing against the pillars of the temple, bringing the house down [7:35]. 👏👏👏 Take that Philistines!
Actually that's only at the very end of the opera, about 10 min. later.

Excellent performance! This piece has some technical difficulties to overcome with regards to synchronization. The conductor managed it masterfully. I also liked how he used his facial expressions to get the right moods out of the ensemble. Kudos to all!

Lovely performance, the somewhat relaxed tempo gave the music room to breathe. The middle section was especially nice, the music seemed to float on the air. Well done.

Timpani in this piece is god tier
Lebhafte und wunderschöne Aufführung dieses spätromantischen und ethnisch komponierten Meisterwerks mit perfekt vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im rhythmischen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!
