This story was inspired by a real Arab Muslim that was an ambassador to the Volga Bulgars from the Abbasid Caliphate...named Ahmad ibn Fadlan. It is not so much his actual story that inspired this, though...it was just the fact that an Arab Muslim really did travel with a group of Vikings.
this movie has so many awesomely quotable lines.
"You saw the Wyrm?!"
"It's calvary. Hundreds of them; with torches."
*"Heh, I'd prefer a dragon".
*"I 'don't sound like that"
*'They take the heads, they always take the heads."
*"They're demons"
*"When you die can I give that to my daughter?"
*"The perfect advisor"
*"Warrior says the wind. Chieftan says the rain. But why seek you me? Met you your match? Met you your match, in the eaters of the dead."
*"Go on make it worse, now its going to rain."
*"Is there a cave!?"
Just real gems.
One of the things I like most about this film is how it isn't the main character that defeated the two main foes, it's rare to let someone else's do the big deeds and even so far as giving his life once his task was done, the main character was just the story teller swept up in the saga and that makes this film work so well for me
He didn't learn the language overnight. The trip took weeks and he paid attention and listened to them talk all day every day until he started understanding.
This film was based on a book by Michael Crichton called Eaters of the Dead. Crichton based the book on the historical account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan who spent time with Norse and Slavic tribes. Crichton also took inspiration from the Anglo-Saxon epic poem: Beowulf. It's interesting that you would bring up Theoden because Tolkein was a Beowulf scholar and based Theoden and Rohan on Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon England.
He didn't learn their language overnight. It took them months to get where they were going. They stopped at night and gathered round the fire for meals, which is when he listened, watched, and learned their language. It took months, not just one night.
In the book it was more than two years btw...
I'm puzzled, how noone gets that it was a long period of time.
+ He is an ambassador, a scholar of languages.
Ahmed's battle prayer was one of my favorite scenes... especially how it blended into the Northmen's prayer.
The meat of it was that he wasn't praying to survive, or praying for victory, or praying for revenge. He was praying that, in the upcoming fracas, he would do the right thing by his comrades, those he was defending, and his faith.

@@DakkonDSalah also approves
"No! I rebuke you and your offering!" 🤣🤣🤣
Though played for comedy here, the norse were reknown for their hygiene in a time when people thought bathing made you sick 😷
I Said no But Just listen to Those Spoiled Bratts The Oven is At500 Yummy Who Would Harm Our Kid's If See SOMEONE NO MY REACTION 😤😠😡🤬💯
Well, baths back in those times were communal. People took baths with 10-30 people at a time. Taking baths in the same water as a sick person would tend have you catch what they had, so they weren't exactly wrong.
The story is based on a Micheal Crichton novel that is inspired by Beowulf the old English epic poem. The Wendel being a a reflection of the monster Grendel in the poem. Then Beowulf slays his evil mother in a cave under a lake. The story then ends with a battle with a dragon.
Buliwyf the “king” of their group being inferred to be the inspiration of the story we know. He also talks to Ahmad about being remembered in stories. Thus the end of the movie gives us the implication that Ahmad will write down this tale and immortalize his friend just like he had hoped.
This is one of my very favorite movies that almost no one has seen or remembers if they do. lol I’m glad you seemed to enjoy it so much.
he also took inspiration from the tales of ahmad ibn fadlan. An arab traveller from the 10th century who wrote down his different trips and the people he meets. And just to be fair... I don't know if scene'crly will read this but in the books, he learns the language in a very long time but it was not very well represented in the film despite their attempt. A great movie overall, a very rare instance where I find the book and the movie to be equally good.
Venus of Willendorf carving is 30,000 years old.
It's fun to watch this movie as someone from Scandinavia, I understand what the vikings are saying. It's definitely Norweigan
When he learns the language, some people have described their cultural immersion, a moment while they are surrounded by a language, when their internal monologs will click over to their host language. For some people, it takes days, others months. Some people never experience it, but I experienced learning the Castelleon Spanish language this way. One day I woke up, and was speaking that language. When I returned home, in my mind I was speaking English, but my family claimed I was speaking fluent Spanish for two weeks.
😮
That’s amazing 😮❤
So the dog can jump ! HAAHAHAAHAA !
Lo' there do I see my Father...
Lo' there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers...
Lo, there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me.
@@TheCrazyNette They bid me take my place among them
@@ArchitectWren In the halls of Valhalla, Where the brave may live forever!
I agree with others...this has always been a personal favorite of mine. John McTiernan has made more than a few really good movies, including this one, The Hunt for Red October, Predator, Die Hard, and Last Action Hero. His films are among the most rewatchable of all times...IMHO. ✌💯🖖
@31:41, no matter how many times I watch this movie this part always gives me goosebumps. Bullwyf staggering from his deathbed to lead his men, his brothers one last time into battle. Then to hear them speak the Viking prayer. Man you get hyped.
Lo there, do I see my father...
@@3Kings_Industries If only they had given Thor this much gravitas in the MCU. 😢😭
Warms my soul.
And having Ahmed finishing with them really bring a sense of true fellowship to the group. They are different, but they are together in this fight as one.
Thank you for giving this little gem of a movie some much needed attention. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nobody ever reacts to this movie, it's one of my favorite films based on a novel
You can't tell in the film, but he was listening to them over the course of several nights at the campfire.
Nights? My headcannon always says it was several months, maybe even years.
@@abeclark524 weeks, maybe even months. I freely admit I have no idea how long it takes a longboat to meander from the Middle East to the middle of Nowhere, Norway.
@@ArchitectWren With horse backs to longboats and then to Norway. I always estimated it to be Several months. For native english speaker learning languange with is latin based: like French, Spanish portugese takes 24 weeks to 30 weeks. Native english speaker to learn Slavic languange takes 40-50 weeks. So I always estimated the travel took around 30-40 weeks.
I have always loved this film. Cinematography and music creates atmosphere I have only more closely found in a Skyrim. I love the amosphere in this film.
Abe, you're probably right. It's been years since I read the book, myself.
This has been a favorite of mine for YEARS.
Also, one of my favorite soundtracks.
This movie - I'm so in love with it! I've seen it many many times and I love it every time! Good people ARE everywhere in this world. What we see as differences -- these things are soooooo inconsequential. People are People - we are not different. When good people come together, differences disappear. BTW, Ahmed Ibn Fadlan was a real person who did indeed travel to the see the Northmen in the 10th century and we have a journal of his experiences - although this particular story in the movie is obviously fictionalized.
A magical film, and one of the few about the travels of a Muslim man encountering other societies, and in the process, expanding his knowledge and making friends.
It was too bad the film was panned by many when it first came out.
I loved this movie as a kid. I still do of course. The scene where he learns their language has always been really cool.
OMG! its my favorite movie! what are the odds!? Thank you, love your reactions. you are going to be one of the big reaction channels for sure, youve got it!
Really good "sleeper" movie. Another really good one is 'Outlander' (2008) with Jim Caviezel
The part that always gets me in this movie is her telling saying “ don’t let them get taken” while she is handing her the knives. Then realizing what she is really telling her.
This one of my favorite hidden gems in this genre. Base on a book Michael Crichton.
He learned the language over months of being immersed in it. Travel took much longer then.
Fun fact: this is based on a true story. The reason it cuts off the way it does is because they could not find the rest of this man’s journal with the rest of his continued journey. So, they tell his story up to the point that they found. You should read the book, it explains more. The books title is, “Eater’s of the Dead”.
Omg omg omg this is one of my favorite movies ever!!!❤️❤️❤️
Interesting pick and good reaction. Not many people watch this but it is an excellent film. The final warrior prayer was impactful.
Very Good book
Very Good soundtrack
Great casting
Timeless Heros
and a touch poetry.
A movie you can't watch only once. Buliwlf was perfectly cast.
I have always jokingly called this movie "Vikings vs. Neanderthals" and I adore it. :) (some people get pedantic that I call it that, relax, I know, it's for giggles)
7:44 this scene is exactly what I experience when I am with my Filipino inlaws. I learn words; try to use them in proper context to them and they smile and cheer my efforts in endearing surprise.
First movie I watched in the theater. Great times
Yes! One of my favorites 🤩
Such an amazing film! So glad you watched it! Wish more channels did
This is the best movie that ever did the transition of language. It gets the point across and its just incredibly well done.
OH MY GOD! This is one of my most favourite movies and so very underrated. No-one reviews this and it is AWESOME!
Ahmed's prayers are so beautiful, and his epilogue is one of the best and most touching.
Great reaction, you really grasped the point of this film. So many people that I've talked to either haven't heard of it or didn't understand it.
One of my favorite movies I've owned it on VHS and DVD I've seen it probably 100 times
Boiling the bacteria out of the cow urine turned it into pure ammonia which is a good cleanser.
Tragically underrated.
If you enjoyed this Viking themed movie I would lile to recommend the move "The Northman" that recently came out. Its literally viking hamlet!
Love this movie :)
oh, one of my fav movies :) somewhat inspired by "Beowulf" poem I think :)
Very much so
Crichton mixed Beowulf with the writings of Ahmad ibn Fadlan for the base novel Eaters of the Dead
@@LordVolkov with the Wendol portrayed as some kind of derivation of the prehistoric tribes from the Jean Auel novels.
Michael Crichton wrote the book on a dare. Parting from the premise that every legend is based on real events, that a the core of each legend there is a grain of truth, he was asked by a colleague what "real event" could have been behind _Beowulf._ So he came up with this, _The Eaters of the Dead._ But in the book the Wendol are a relict population of Neanderthals or some other archaic human species. I kind of wish the movie had kept this aspect instead of just some savage humans. I love how Crichton incorporated the Ahmad ibn Fadlan's actual account of meeting the Volga Vikings.
Another wonderful reaction. I've read the book this movie is based on several times. It, like the film are near-forgotten gems.
You might like Pathfinder starring Karl Urban. This is the story of a Viking child taken in and raised by Native Americans after his father's raiding expedition is wiped out.
There's no other movie that is made solely of quotes. From the beginning to the end. Incredible! One of my all time favourites. For the quotes and the music.
I loved how you loved the movie! I also think it's very beautiful how they ask to their gods to bless each other. Their relationship that grows throughout the movie is marvelous. There are a lot of wisdom in this movie about how we should carry our lives without fear and enjoying every second of it.
Your comment about the king is great! He indeed was a king that served those who needed him and courageously did his duties. No wonder he readily volunteered to be the first warrior. A true humble and honorable man!
Like you said...a king is what a king does. Religion is supposed to uphold this philosophy. I am my brother’s keeper! #queenandgoddess
Banderas was perfect as the arab, Spain for almost 700 years was Muslim country.
This movie is cooler than I remember.
true king, there is no dispute! courage, might, and wisdom!
The actor who played Bullwyf would make a great Arthas Menethil.
Or Thor, back in the day.
Ibn is just there for the ride. He was the writer of the story. It’s a good book.
we even learned in cooking class, 2 beers can increase the efficiency, the thing is handling yourself to not drink more.
Finnaly people are checking out this awsome film one of my all time fav movies its a shame this movie dident get the hype it desurves but its a work of art
If we doing this, there's no reason we can't do some 300 or Troy! If you have not seen those already.
Although its very much B-class movie I love it becouse of its "vibe" of vikings times - the epic music, the misterious foe, the themes of warrior honor and duty - thats all great for me :) But I always laugh about their costumes, esp the guy who got plate armor of seemingly 5 centuries later production :D a spanish conquistadors armor :D
Same 😂 when I was younger I didn’t realise until I was older & learned more about the different armour & weapons of other cultures 😅
This movie is awesome! I watch it about 3 times a year. A great guys working together and growing together film
I love this movie.
One of my favorite movies.
This movie bombed at the box office, making $70 million dollars against a $110 million dollar budget.
But it has become a true cult classic though.
We Love You You Are A Lady GOD BLESS YOU For Posting Eternal love
this is such an awesome movie
Lmao she still traumatized as hell from Voldemort. Im dead
LOLLLL
So beautiful...everytime 💛
I love the scene with mead :D He was not allowed to drink alcohol from grapes but he never knew about alcohol from honey. So it seems that it was ok to drink it as the religion never said anything about making it from honey. :D And of course its too cold for vineyards in vikings land. And gee people :) I love mead, its my fav kind of beverage, better than beer and I prefer it over wine. I highly recomend it for Christmas eve or New Years eve as hot drink with spices - gorgous thing :)
I still have this movie on VHS.
Absolutely phenomenal film ! 😍👏
rest assured who Star Trek's Klingon's were modeled after :D
I love this movie ❤ you are the first reactor that I've ever seen watch this.

The Man in the Iron Mask from 1998 is a fantastic movie that I feel you would like if you get chance sometime. I'd be curious to see your reaction to it.
to be fair english came to me while watching a fair bit of wrestling, JR and the King, are at fault :D but yeah if you listen long enough it comes to you
This is what it is to be a man...
Don't ever turn your nose at it. Real men. Real ish...
Turn up your nose? Who did that?
🙏💯💝🍒💎
The thing with Eban knowing their language so soon is obviously one of the weakest points of the movie :) He could not know it so soon, maybe if they traveled for many months. But at the same time we know he is a poet and diplomat from a multicultural place (one of Arabic kingdoms) so probably he already knew many languages (esp Persian as the language of literature I guess), so its understandable that his ability to learn another lang was much better than average person. Still Omar Sharif's charachter knows Latin and Greek and the viking which befriends them knows Latin too. That a viking knows both Latin and Greek is IMO impossible, esp that Latin was abandoned for like 4 - 5 centuries in most places the vikings can be seen at 10th, if we exclude the christian monasteries of course, but the only thing vikings can be looking for in monasteries were treasures and looting not learning languages :D but some of vikings could known Greek becouse some of them were hired as mercenaries by Bysantine empire (east Roman empire) which use Greek not Latin.
🌹🙏👍
K.S.O. doesn't seem familiar with 6th century Nordic culture.
And that useless long intro is why I am not finishing watching your video and that is why nobody is watching them
Ok. God bless. Thank you.
One of the less diverse culture person i had ever seen. Like, no history, no nothing. Less then basic.
