That's mindblowing how they manage to make us feel nostalgic about memories that aren't ours. I didn't know that was possible.
I think its because it feels so universal. We all remember summer days in the sun, times spent with family and friends, people we knew and loved. This video and song tap into something very human.
That was exactly what I was thinking. :)
It's the purpose of art, no? To feel something new yet familiar?
oONodokaOo
totaly agreed... i think the same... and i find it in most of Beirut songs... they take me to a distante, yet beautiful past... cheers!
oONodokaOo ¿Saudade?
This was our song, my wife and I. She was amazing and I'll miss her till my last day. Might not be a believer in any kind of afterlife but Nat, I hope you know that I think of you every day and any time I hear this song I sing it out loud for you. You were the thing in this life people look for and never find. I love you.
You’re deeply loved
Dude you made me cry... I wish you all the best
@Leo Jerez I appreciate it. It's been a few years now, and I'm getting along ok. Our boys keep me busy. Lol. Don't go shedding tears. She was worth it and the life we built was incredible. They might have a melancholy filter, but the memories will always make me smile.
🥺 It's so beautiful
❤❤❤
I used to listen to this during a state of depression that I had, and it reminded me that there was always a little joy in this seemingly cruel Earth, no matter what goes on in life.
It's amazing.
Earth is not cruel . Cruel is equivalent to pain , which is just a entity that manifest itself into a feeling . Pain is just a period of time and we are just a time barrier that stopped the pain form escaping. In order to beat it , we must be the pain. But wtv , I love this song
amirul mazuri
Yeah, tell that to the kids in agony from disease all around the world, just be the pain. What a callous and stupid thing to say.
Steve Bob It's actually one of the most sane things I've ever heard. It means that though there will always be pain, it's just something that will always live on, and that you have to live through it no matter what. There are good times, and there are bad times. It might be callous, but it's right.
MnZvids
I understood what he meant, but the world is a cruel place, and his attempt at removing the problem of pain via sophistry is both callous and stupid.
"It's actually one of the most sane things I've ever heard."
He stated that pain is an entity that manifests itself into a feeling. What the fuck kind of nutty company do you keep?
"it's just something that will always live on, and that you have to live through it no matter what."
This means the earth isn't a cruel place? How?
this song, musically and lyrically, is the perfect sound of the feeling of love, love in its most primal, deeply rooted, and diverse forms... childhood, family, true friends, your love... but its also an ode to the enormity of the world we live in and the life we play. only music can be capable of creating this haunting, beautiful impression.
Exactly...
And capturing those in such a perfect way, that is unexplainable.
To je ljubavna pjesma na Mediteranu.
The times we had
Oh, when the wind would blow with rain and snow
Were not all bad
We put our feet just where they had
Had to go, never to go
The shattered soul
Following close but nearly twice as slow
In my good times
There were always golden rocks to throw
At those who
Those who admit defeat too late
Those were our times, those were our times
And I will love to see that day
That day is mine
When she will marry me outside
With the willow trees
And play the songs we made
They made me so
And I would love to see that day
Her day was mine
How fucking original, putting the lyrics of a song on that songs video.
Soviet Potato I'm singing this song because the lyrics, stop bitching.

Don't be a ghoul.
Thank you very much for posting the lyrics!
I got cancer last year and everytime I should take a rest in my bed after chemotherapy I was laying with my mom and we heard all of Beirut’s songs! I love Beirut, thanks for sharing your music with us..

2:54 This part gets me everytime. Goosebumps everywhere.
It's a level of genuine joy you don't get to see people express very often.
Happens to me everytime but specially when I was in high school. I was in love with a girl I knew and I everytime I heard those trumpets going I felt a mellow vibe running through my spine, imagining a life by her side. It was beautiful.
@@ssrocksss That's such a lovely sentiment ❤️
Yeah, but the blackface dancers ruin it a little lol.
Listening to this song today gives me hope for Italy. And all of us.
May the Lord make everything right soon. Amen!
thank you from Italy
why italy?
@@AdeM-kc7sc - Because back when the original post was written, it was Italy alone in the Western world that was ravaged by an outbreak of Covid. It was the first country in Europe to be affected. It only spread to others a couple of months later.
Love it when you stumble on a great band that's been around for ages but is brand new to your ears....like vintage wine!
Jackson Gash What a great comment !
I concur
+1
It's February 2020 and I just heard this song for the first time and holy shit.
@@adampratt1925 i am really sorry... I am so much in love with beirut that i always end up commenting some shit stuff...
I remember my first day when i came to know about beirut.
I was listening to milky chance on saavn (may be a playlist of 10 songs)
I slept listening to them.
The playlist ended and was on auto mode and it kept on playing nearly 2 hours.
And when i woke up, bamm!!!
I was listening to the elephant gun.
I am admirer of great music, and whatever force that exist in this world, made me to get to know beirut..
Those were my times...
I remember walking the streets of Paris to my college class during the metro strikes in Fall 2007, listening to this song/album on loop on my brand new color screen iPod.
Aww that's awesome.
Sucks now in 2017 you'll have a Muslim blindslide your ass in Paris! LOL
Actually it's sad :(
phroz it's sad that human being got away from an area where they likely would have died?
I lack your perspective i guess
This video makes me nostalgic for a time that was never mine.
such a deep comment... same
i wish there was a word for this feeling...
sehnsucht i think is applicable
makes me feel miss something that i dont know what it is...
The footage in this video looks like it was from around the time I was young. I find it sad these simplistic times have now gone. Technology has taken over people's lives
Anyone else cry real tears while listening to this song?
Ariel Martin I do!
Ariel Martin Reminds me two summers ago in Italia and makes me cry
:( me.
Ariel Martin you will cry louder if you have been to Italy. **
Ariel Martin I do!
Beirut gives me this feeling of happy sadness... In a way it is like being happy to be alive but sad that I'm not really living my life at its fullest, yet there's hope.
Why did we fail to make this band better known?
Exactly. Well put.
Why is this making me cry? This is seriously the best song I’ve heard in the last few years ❤
I love the fact that this is an American musician with so much influence from Europe and gypsy music, he is really giving something to this continent that people otherwise might not have had the ambition to discover for themselve
Probably the most beautiful Beirut song ever...
Agreed.
elephant gun to me, but this is a close one
And that says a lot, to be honest.
@@joabesouzasantos5671 nooo, this is better. Hehehe. But both songs are very very good. Sometimes I just can't decide which one is better.
I don't know why but Beirut always make me feel like I'm listening to the soudtrack of Europe
+Paulo Henrique So well said.
+Paulo Henrique its "post cards from italy" suggesting that they are on holiday
***** Awesome! I really enjoyed the whole Gulag Orkestar album, but I have to admit that I'm a little disapointed with their last full lengh LP No, No, No. I hope to see more European influence in their next albums.

oww RIP darling.
Not my ex though unfortunately
this song makes me cry!! my heart is melting. When I close my eyes while listening to it, I am taken away to a loving utopia, something about that beat, trumpet and ukulele, my God, so beautiful!
fall in love with this song the first time spotify suggested for me. there's something about their music, the vocal. it's like i was taking to different world. that's my friends how to make a song
RHP Me too!😱 I had heard this song on Spotify too. I always listen in the shower
One of the most beautiful countries I visited so far, stay strong Italy! I'm looking forward to experiencing all those beautiful places and memories again
This song holds so many memories for me. It used to bring me to tears for years. Coming back to it for the first time in a long time and in a nostalgic mood, I'm glad that it makes me smile rather than cry. Some of the good times might be gone forever and the future may seem scary, but the power to keep growing, experiencing and becoming better is in all our hands. And that's what it's about I guess. Fuck I'm old... Cheers guys
This band has been accessory to many of my panic attacks and mental breakdowns. And now, mentally stable and happy with who i am it brings me joy to reminisce on the hard times this has helped me through. Beautiful music without a doubt.
Needed this today. Thanks man.
There is so much of some kind of innocence and purity in Beirut's songs that I have to confess, make me cry. They create a mixed feeling of sadness, happiness and hope in me.
I listened to this some years ago and never thought that much of it. The trumpet melodies seemed to never leave me. It took me some more years to source who actually did it and to find it again.
I listened to this song while walking around in Rome the year it came out, and every time I hear it I get all nostalgic
This song reminds me of my love. My boyfriend has been away in Italy for almost 3 years, while I finish up with college. Every time he sends me a message, I think of this song and all of the memories in the past. Simple yet beautifully put together. Finally a song I can relate to!
I can't get over how amazing the lead singer's voice is.
This song is just amazing. So calming, inspiring, and meaningful, all at the same time.
@Boxing Bro That's nostalgia, mane. Most dangerous drug on earth.
I heard this song back in late 2007 ( when my grandmother have passed) immediately looked up all their songs and truly fell in love with each one of them... and I'm still
I always remember my grandma when I listen to this song. All the great memories, the summer days, the joy. ❤️
Beirut makes me so nostalgic
Me too
One of my all time favorite songs.
Muuuch love from Italy, Beirut
EXPLOCION EXPLOCION
My ex boyfriend put this on one of his mixtapes to me… we have over a hundred songs worth between the 10 mixtapes we sent back and forth… and now we will never see each other again… I kind of vowed to not listen to any of the songs ever again… but then this song just came on and here I am. I am so heartbroken.
I never knew this song would start so hopeful for me, then become so hurtful
Maybe some day it won't hurt anymore
Beirut es amor
Beirut es vida.
Beirut es Paz
Beirut es perfección
Tú más porque te gusta Beirut :D
Beirut es sonrisa.
One of the most prettiest songs in the world
I feel warmth inside my heart. World feels like a better place. Love you Beirut
Everyone says how nostalgic this song makes them feel, when for some reason this song makes me think about the future and all the new memories I’ll make
that was the case too when I was younger, but now that I am older, it makes me feel nostalgic instead
this
Great response.
I like to imagine that. We still have so many more to live.
For me it is an amazing and strange combination of both.
I recall the warm moments of my past while also dreaming of my future. Ahh I love it haha
Alguém aí que ama Beirut? Pra mim são incomparáveis... Amo demais
After listening to this song on Shameless, I fell in love with it. I know now this song will become more popular and has added thousands of more fans I am sure.
I dont know if happens to anyone else, but when i feel i need to cry i just listen to this song and others beirut's songs. Helps a lot.
This is such a lyrically perfect song.
eu amo essa banda. Me inspira, me deixa emocionada ao lembrar do meu irmão, é o meu coração.
Beirut is an absolute good. Beirut is life.

AC 7H0M50N Praise be to Gott.
This is the most beautiful video ever. I always cry watching it.
I love all of their records but this and A Sunday Smile remains to be untopped.
Just love Beirut, been interwoven in my life since early twenties, 40 this year and still pretty much my favourite band. Brilliant, talented, always humble...captures time travel somehow without ever trying too hard..certainly not for our benefit. Great gift..thanks Zach and compadres..I’ll be listening til the day I die.

hey my son introduced me to Beirut and now I love them so much that I'm even thinking of flying to Japan to catch them in concert
I'm just in love with 2:01 onwards
The first time I heard this song 10 years ago and loved the song just as a Song. 10 years later and I finally get the songs message and love it so so much more, I wish I was still with all the people who made happy memories with me! Especially you Mom, I love you and miss you so much ❤️
I want this song played at my wedding if i was to ever have one
My ex introduced me to Beirut and I will forever be great full, gave me the record and its beautiful, we are still friends, dont talk as much but keep in touch every now and again,
Love this song. Was released during a very dark time. Friend of mine at the time played mandolin for Beirut. That’s how I became acquainted with the music. Almost too painful to listen to now.
Coisa linda. Agradecido pela música e pela vibração. ❤️
This album doesn't make me nostalgic for a time I didn't live through. It makes me nostalgic for a coda to Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" that I never got to hear. These sounds dredge up ghosts that I desperately miss.
I love this so much!
My eyes tear a little everytime I hear this song
The trumpets in this song are exquisite.
Kocham, odkąd usłyszałam kilkanaście lat temu na TVP Kultura. Coś innego, pięknego, wrażliwego... Doceniam, szanuję, zostaje w moim sercu w specjalnym miejscu. ❤
Perfeição!

Sounds more like you were buzzed. Had ya been high, you’d have gotten a ukulele, too 🤪 😉
Whenever I think of what an ideal bard sound like THIS is the voice that comes to mind. True troubadour.
I've listened to Postcard From Italy since 2016 and I swear this song is my favorite, I had a lot of new moments in life and this song was played in that moments until now. And at the same year, I made friends with this boy from Italy, but I guess we only talk once, I don't remember how, we didn't talk again, maybe we both were thinking that we are not interesting, but we still follow each other on instagram. And then at the beginning of August 2019 he sent me some messages saying that he was stalking through my Spotify account which i put on my bio. And then he saw the Beirut's Gulag Orkestar album cover on my playlist. He also loves this song too! This is how this all started. Long story short, he said that he wants to send me some gifts, we started become a couple, etc. He also plays guitar. So I guess he can relate to the ending of the lyrics. And this day, I received my gifts, the Beirut's Gulag Orkestar Vinyl as one of the gifts. I didn't expect that I'm gonna get such a beautiful gift. This is too good to be true. So, I'm looking at this video again to have a little nostalgic feeling to the first time I look at this video and was thinking "I'm gonna have a person who will also appreciate this song."
There is yet to be made a videoclip which makes me feel better than this one

This is legitimately one of my favorite songs of all time. And I've heard the Beatles
Been listening to the this for the past 2 years. Just realised it’s 13 years old. Where the frick have I been?
I know, I have listened to their music for the last 10 years, got all CDs and still feel like I missed all of it. Oh. and I'm from Poland and Balkans..
Ahhhh, Beirut me acalma nas minhas crises de ansiedade ♥
Essa música sempre me relaxa, me transporta para uma outra atmosfera!
This song is like a Ferrero Rocher, doesn't last enough
I've always been inspired by this warm feeling that comes floating from their songs...
