I got walled by WALL on my first 1v1. I waited, built a strong eco, Palladians, Trebs, Halberdiers. Just as I was about to Ongar through the trees, WALL Ongered through the trees and came in with an army of Palladians. I survived, but gg'ed soon after out of sheer exhaustion! #thelegendofwall
This is basically how I played against AI when I was young. It's a ton of fun. Layers of walls were also a great strat on AoE3 "no rush" games in 2006.
As ridiculous as this strategy is, it does have historical precedent. Just look at the Battle of Alesia - Caesar walled in the Gauls, and then walled in his own legions once he heard the Gauls were sending reinforcements.
Lesson: Always protect your gates and resource stockpiles nearby. Without access to gold, your opponent has no challenge to their supremacy. Early skirmishers are all it takes, to stop enemies building too close to your base. Supported with spear men and even villagers if needed. Don’t feel bad sending villagers into battle, if it stops the enemy denying you access to gold. The enemy has already sent their villagers across the map, to do battle and so is already behind economically. Once you’ve achieved ‘base security’, your villagers are nicely positioned to build, and or gathering materials. They can place houses instead of watchtowers and an early stable to reinforce your position. Then get Castles up ASAP to solidify your gains and remember to get the relics and upgrades at university. Protect monks at all costs though, as they will heal your cavalry units that you can rotate in and out of battle, as they’re wounded. Always have a rapid reaction force of trash units at hand, in case enemy tries a ram rush and cavalry to use as a 2nd wave, followed by archers or ranged units with a group of monks close by. This way you can even bring the trash units back to be healed, at the exact moment your cavalry are entering the fray. The enemy may even follow your trash units and be killed, by your supporting divisions and castles. Then a reversal on your enemy is possible, as they’re out of position, have less resources and they’re defences are incomplete, bc they went offensive too much. At least raiding they’re economy will make matters even worse for them and they will never fully recover. The only way they can recover is by trading at the market, so make sure you buy up what they need so the price is high for them, and or sell your excess resources, so they can’t get gold easily. The best key to victory is to gain monopoly on the gold.
Tip: You can send villagers to build walls around resources and even relics. Connecting walled resources nearby to your base, will make accessing them easier, if the enemy does gain early superiority.
What I love about the Portugal pick is that, their feitorias and to a letter extent cheaper units have absolutely zero synergy with this strategy, because the whole point of this is that you secure the entire map.
I played him 2 weeks ago and beat him with Japanese. He was Teutons. Also I consistently go up to 1150 and drop to 980. I play with all the meta builds. I'm just too slow a player once everythings full on. I'm from Australia and my names Dwight Schrute on steam.
When you come to it and you can't go through it and you can't knock it down, you know that you've found... THE WALL! This was an amazing game to experience, hope you cast more of WALL's games T90
I love the people in chat that cant get it through their heads that red is a noob - "why doesn't he do this", "all he needs to do is..."," he should just...", "he needs to make more...", "he could..." etc.. and on and on for the entire video, like oh, you mean this isn't an unbeatable strategy for which there can be no counter? thanks for sharing
I really like the pause screen having some static and a flashing pause, so many videos from other channels where I can't tell if they're frozen or not haha. Always going the extra mile, T90!
The Romans did this to a fort during the conquest of Britain. They built their own wall directly around a the fort's wall. It's kind of a reverse siege tactic.
Okay I watched this once before and just realized that it reminds me of the first game I played online in the ages of dial up and Microsoft gaming zone. I remember finding the opponents base and it was like three sets of 2 layer walls filled with onagers and longbows and towers. To be fair I had no clue how to deal with any of that.
This is much more fun than 400 fast castles on Arabia in a row, first to build a lumber camp wins. For many years this crazy shit was exactly how I pictured AOE
years ago i played a an rts named total annihilation. my friend used to build massive armies of construction units. he then sent them at players using their 'reclaim' (deconstruct) ability. took tons of losses but came out ahead wiping out their armies then their bases. funny and kool
I had no interest in age of empires, however I had played it 20 years ago. As I watched your video, your enthusiasm really sold the game for me. Loved the vid.
I used to play Star Trek Armada II against the computer, and I'd just sit back and build starbases and photon torpedo turrets closer and closer to my opponent and then surround them with turrets, denying them access to the rest of the map. And then I would decommission turrets that were too far from the opponent, like some gigantic slow moving centipede made entirely out of buildings that can shoot. Now, against a human player, this doesnt work because you can build starships that fire artillery shots, which usually suck, but they can outrange all buildings and slowly destroy them. But the computer, no matter how strong, would just spam units and send them at you immediately, rather than building a critical mass of starships, they would all suicide against my turrets while I had basically no army. Then I would slowly build my own artillery starships and I'd shoot their base from safely behind my own base, which I build around their base. My base was the entire map. Their base was foolishly placed next to my base, within artillery range. Not the wisest move. I fully understand this Wall guy's strategy. It's fun for those of us who are bad at building military units and mircomanaging armies in RTS games.
I have actually went up againts him and this guy was literally so hard to beat he consistently walled with bombards and i even made way through the forest so i can beat him i cam close but the fitorea gave him the advantage and i lost and yea he mentioned fatslob in our match too
Know this guy personally, watched over his shoulder as he played once here in Australia. Walling is all he does and he is very good at it. If he ever walls you in early, you are 99% screwed usually.
Wow. Lesson learned: If I ever play this guy, the first thing I'm doing is sending several villagers outside of my walls, then fast-Castling so I can build additional TCs out in freedom.
With the amounts of wood and food red had, I'd mass Light Cav and petards. Send the petards one by one to a point of the wall and eventually make it through.
Honestly I would be fine with being walled in. My friend that I play against pretty often once asked me if I have a split personality disorder when playing this game. Some games I try to go all out offense, than I have games that I play defensively. So if you wall me in, most likely I will boom while getting my siege onager ready for a little hello gift, problem with that strategy is that my units would be trash units, fully upgraded but trash, so if opponent collected relics it would be hard to outlast him.
I'm 950ish elo and that kind of stuff (deer push, spliting vils) is common. If you are at that elo it usually means that you've been watching some viper and hera and know stuff

i understood nothing you said with elo, futurica, magnolia...etc :D but its fun to watch the strategy. It is way different , as walls normally defend, not attack. :D :D its like you playing a regular game, and some random guy comes on with a whacky Idea!!!! Love the game of both Red and Blue. My brother and I did a 2v2 one night, and an opposing player dropped. With the remaining opponent we walled him in, and then slowly began annexing the area inside the walls cutting him off more and more. We'd get in the chat an appoligize about it each time and reason that we needed to build a barraks or another university in the newly annexed area. We even avoided a relic victory and brought a relic to him but he wouldnt grab it with a monk. Eventually he resigned. My brother needed to get up early for class the next day and I kept saying "no dude come on lets annex more land from him"
