My theory is that OS companies like windows and google make this stuff deliberately obtuse to make the cloud seem more appealing as an alternative. Older versions of their OS had much simpler, easier and more reliable ways to manage your own data on your own device without the need for any 3rd party oversight. But if that's available who would buy their cloud subscriptions?

I agree. It would be a nice future but I figured it out. Here is how: A folder named "WATCH" will pop up on your windows desktop. Open it then click on "Networks" on the left. Then on the right you will have the names of your other laptops. Just click on the laptop that you want to access files from.

SMB 1.0 protocol is turned off by default because it has security vulnerabilities and only remains as an available feature for backwards compatibility with old operating systems like XP, etc...
I've watched several videos and read several tutorials about setting up a home network and this is the first time i've heard of this feature. So i looked it up - tutorials like this one rarely explain WHY we are doing things - and first 3 things I read were about why NOT to use this.

Wow... This was a great video. I was trying to share files between my Windows 11 and Linux Mint by following instructions on Google but It was way to complicated. Then I came a cross your video and It worked like a charm. Thank you so much. What a life saver you are.
Unfortunately, many of the menus that you showed no longer exists in Win 11. At least not on my version. For example, there is no Network and Sharing Center. You can't even find it with a search. Nor is there anything equivalent to the options you show. Beem struggling with this for the past 6 hrs and unfortunately, most of the sites I found were similarly outdated.
@@JackieWelles I have all the menus as well. You gotta make sure you check for Windows updates multiple times bc sometimes a W PC will say its updated but manual checks lead to more updates.
I swear it wasn't this bad in windows 7. But, follow this video, and bang! What took nearby share like 5 minutes for 100mb, was instantanious just getting it from the network

Did everything in the guide, but I still can't access my computer with my Nvidia shield media player over my wired home network... This is just so frustrating, especially running a brand new 6K $ Alienware gaming desktop with Windows 11, while it used to run perfectly on my 10 year old desktop! Progress....
After completing steps in this tutorial...Create a folder on same PC, right click on folder - Select, "Give access to" - "Specific people..." - Click on drop down arrow, and select, "Everyone" (or a name) - click, "Add", should now have, "Everyone" in Window showing "Read", click drown down arrow beside "Read" and select, "Read/Write", click on, "Share" button, click, "Done". The link displayed can be used to create a permanent network link through File Explorer (another tutorial), but if you go to another PC you should now have access to the newly created shared folder when you click on the "Network" icon. HTH :-) But it really should be a lot easier to create shared folders in your own home!!! :-|
It's still not working. The pc I'm using is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600g. What to do? It's not showing in another PC , & it shows on the mobile phone but isn't accessible.
Followed all of your steps, and I still can not access the other computers. Win7 was simple, Win8+ more steps. My error problem is "\\systemA is not accessible" ... followed directions on both PCs and it says I don't have access.
2024 never met a video doing full explanation how to do it properly when sharing folder don't forget to go disable password sharing in windows advanced sharing option + in the folder you share go in to folder options > sharing tab > share... press that blank area arrow and select everyone allow and now you can access cap out ✌

It was really simple in Win 10. I simply right clicked on a folder or drive and then click on Give Access To, and then set a few things and the drive or folder would be visible and sharable to the entire network. That option has totally disappeared when you right click. As a result, I'm still struggling to make my Win 11 computer visible.
It's still there, you just have to click the "Show more options" button, and you will have the familiar right click menu. For some reason, Microsoft thought we needed 2 different right click menus.
System error 67 network name cannot be found (on the Windows 11 PC). On Windows 10 PC "\\PCName is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource." It continues with multiple connections by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. This is the biggest PIA since Windows 98.

it didn't work at first. than later I found that sharing will not work if the PC account is an Microsoft account method! so I changed the account to local account then worked! Windows sucks! thanks for the video

this is absolutely disgusting lol I got half way with everything you showed, but still wasn't working. my goodness. it was easier and faster to just copy the files I needed to my google drive and then voila! got the files on my other pc. easy fix lol my god. what a mess.

Strange because all the menus he showed are indeed availabe on W11 as of July 2022.

My Windows 11 looks totally different once I get to Control Panel, although it did match my WIn 10 Pro system.
How do you map a SharePoint drive? Within Internet option, the Site button is greyed out.

Might want to also make one including Windows Firewall will block any apps that you dont approve of on your private/public network.
